Leland showed and taught me more about the Rose Parade in two days than I have in my whole life lol. So cool to see the 'behind the scenes' stuff. I was wondering during the walk around yesterday where all the parade floats were and how that all worked. I'm guessing there are a lot of organizers and crew that get very little sleep during this couple of weeks. A logistical challenge to say the least.
@RockandRollWoman7 күн бұрын
"Every inch of every float must be covered with flowers or other natural materials, such as leaves, seeds or bark". This is a Rose Parade rule I learned in the 80's, when I volunteered with people in my law firm to help build floats. It's a great excuse for a party, though you have to dress warmly. Floats are assembled in a warehouse, and it's kept cold to keep the flowers fresh. The truly astonishing thing about the Rose Parade is that it doesn't rain. Statistically, there should be some real downpours, but it just doesn't seem to happen! I always loved going on January 2nd to look at the floats up close. No waiting in the cold (yes, it gets cold in Pasadena overnight) and you can take as much time as you wanted appreciating the detail. Of course, you don't get to see the live stuff that was going on as the float went by both. Bottom line, both ways to view floats are good, and I'm glad I had the float building experience, too. Watching on television is also fine!

Happy New Year 😊, long time since I got to help build a float. It was one of our High School Homecoming times. Sophomore year. Not anything like the Rose Bowl. Fun though. I was a little nervous about the two monkeys with the Shriners and all the little cars and toppling fezzes. Two of the Shriners were in charge of wrangling the small monkeys. They must've kept them at each of their homes. Things went better than I would've expected.
@RockandRollWoman6 күн бұрын
@splashesin8 Quite a story. Did you know who The Monkees belonged to? (Note: I use voice typing, and my program assumed I meant The Monkees, not a pair of small primates. My focus on music has trained my voice typing.... it even got the capital T in The Monkees! 🤣) My uncle was a Shriner with a fez hat. They had a band called The Pinheads. No monkeys, though. This was in Illinois.
@splashesin86 күн бұрын
@@RockandRollWoman :) I didn't know these particular Shriners personally, I was just right behind them, and they were bringing up the end of the rest of the little cars in the parade. I ended up being a candy throwing clown, which surprises me now that there weren't any ordinances pertaining to what and how that should be done. It was sort of like backwards trick or treating. I was just careful to not, potentially injure anyone. I was relieved to be out of candy at one point so could then run up ahead and interact with the rest of the floats I hadn't seen. I'm not even sure which group or club rode on the float I helped build. I do remember that the typing teacher was in charge of that one, and had gotten us to sign on for it. This was the second time I did the clown thing. I didn't know that was going to happen till maybe half an hour before hand either. Was recruited by the teachers with the grease paint. I would be in trouble if I trusted my phone to decipher anything close to what I said.🤣

I played many New Years Eve gigs there, as well as Shaker Mountain Inn and Sawmill and our ritual was to drive the parade route on the 30th/31st, see all the folks camping out for the parade, go see the floats being prepped, then go to the Nightwatch/elsewhere for the gig......... mucho fun---- thanks for bringing it all back to the front burner of consciousness :) Have a safe/happy NYE..............

Thank you for being here for everyone, Leland. As I said in my earlier comment, we all need to do what we can to shape 2025 as a year to remember fondly. We as a nation and a species cannot permit the potential of what could go wrong to stop us from making it right. When you had the camera trained on the ABC Van, what came to mind for me was this late 80s ad (one that I was conveniently thinking of already) that ran here in New York tri-state area. It included a selection of 8-millimeter-style film clips, and a recurring line that was repeated by a bunch of people in unison at the end of the commercial was “There’s that news van again!”
Thanks for all you do! You keep us all company in the most creative way. Happy New Year to you both.

Kinda guess they spray paint a type of coating to the finished float, so that it doesn’t “self destruct” when moving it to the parade staging area and through the route?
