Summer Of '42
Theme song, Hollywood movie 'Summer of '42 ' (1971, USA)
Feelings of the summer of ’42 that's passed ... First Love.
Unforgettable 'Sweet and sour sentiments' that like a swaying and shining light ... Still now, one summer bittersweet loves reminiscence brought back in to my mind.
Sentiments de l’été 42 passé... Premier Amour.
The Summer of '1942.... Because, still under wartime... a boy was evacuating to the island and having boring days. But one day, Boy meets a fascinating woman on this island ... It was a lovely older woman. This is the story of Fresh love that spelled the encounter and farewell of a boy of one summer.
I watched to dazzling charm of Jennifer O'Neill that playing a lovely older women, That time, that for too much lovely I was forget me, and forgot to pass to time!
And Gary Grimes playing adolescent boys attracted to beautiful ladies was also a wonderful natural acting.
And, than anything the appeal of this movie was Michel Legrand's soundtrack .
The song composed of interwoven with string instruments such as violin and wind instruments was a delicate, deep, very sentimental and beautiful music.
The theme song of this movie
'Theme For Summer Of '42 The Picasso Suite'
'The Summer Knows (End Title Theme From Summer Of '42)'
Please enjoy with beautiful Michel Legrand theme song.

We never married, I moved away, but not a day goes by I don't think about her! I remember seeing this film when it was released in ‘71. I was just about Hermie’s age and, damn, did I ever want to fall in love with someone who looked like Jennifer O’Neill. I was captivated by this movie - the storyline, the score, the beauty of a woman out of my reach - at 14 or 15 years old, I had no idea what falling in love was, nor would I until four years later when I met a girl my own age who stole my heart and broke it shortly thereafter. I’ve been fortunate to have been married for over forty years to the woman who made my life worth living, but hearing this theme music and watching this clip brought me right back to that time of teenage angst and sadness over losing at love for the first time. Time heals all, but the scars remain.

When they reach puberty, young people start to become conscious of the women they admire. And this movie was made based on the experience of the original author. That's why I think this movie and music strongly appealed to these young people and was shared. (It was able to empathize and see it according to my experiences and situations in the story) And most of all, I got the perfect actress for the role of the heroine, and also got a wonderful theme song. 'A bittersweet experience of fellowship with a longed-for woman', Is may be proof of the life lived by an immature and man who was young.

This movie captured a moment in time (like most movies do) in which America was more like America. The quiet strength of the narration of this man and his coming of age is as beautiful as the entire soundtrack by master composer Michel Legrand. A gem from wherever point of view you look at it.

The boy in this movie has grown as a person through the precious experience of one summer. You can see it in the boy's conversation and action in the movie and the grown-up boy's narration at the end. And above all the life-size acting of the boy and the heroine is natural and exquisite. The silent scene where the two spend the silent without talking is beautiful and very delicate atmosphere and overwhelming. And All I hear is the sound of waves...The bluish soft focus image was really beautiful. It's not a big-budget movie, but it's full of poetry, and the actors, director, and music are all excellent. my all time favourite!

SUMMER OF '42 is perhaps the film that marked most deeply my adolescence and appreciation of women. I felt an empathy beyond words with the character of Hermie, played by Gary Grimes, and Jennifer O'Neil was a beauty to die for, and the music... oh the soundtrack by Michel Legrand still makes me stop everything to listen, whenever its notes reach my ears. And I listen with my heart as I go back at least 50 years to revisit memories of older women I wished - still wish - I had known intimately, but never did.

Few movies have so beautifully portrayed the sweet and sour events that people experience during puberty in the process of growing up. Hermie was played by Gary Grimes of newcomer but I was able to sympathize with her with him very natural performance. And it should be the beauty of Jennifer O'Neil who plays the heroine. The combination of these two persons, combined with Michel Legrand's music, I think seems to have established the appeal of this film. I thinking this movie and music are definitely excellent works that will resonate with many hearts. Thanks!

Beautiful theme music. Though I was not yet a teenager when this film came out, I can see how a young guy a few years older than me could fall hard for Jennifer O'Neil like I did for Farrah Fawcett and Lynda Carter. Looking at this movie as a mature man of 60, I see the heartbreak in her face after you see the letter of his passing on the table. The music seems to heighten her sense of loss and her desperate attempt to fill that void with the teenage boy. Oh how our hearts felt love and longing in those years! I treasure my memories so much of the loves of my youth!

She died in April/2014 and was buried with full honors in Arlington National Cemetery with full honors. I miss her dearly after nearly 9 years. No significant other since, whom I would marry. I will see her again in Heaven. That I am sure of. R/ Dipak

I was blessed to have had a similar experience. Not being a good-looking guy, poor background, socially awkward, my teen years were awful. At 19, by chance while out riding my bike along the Swansea foreshore in South Wales, in the Summer of 83, I met a woman who at the time, was in her mid-40s. I had stopped on the path to assist two girls who had trouble with their bikes (rather tarty girls to whom I had no attraction whatsoever!) when as I was trying to re-attach a chain to the wheel, the job was taken over by a guy in his mid 50s: clearly once a good-looking bloke, he was aging badly but was incredibly arrogant and clearly wanted to jump the two tarts, who were also up for it. Incredibly...he was With HIs Wife!! She stood at the side of the path, watching her stupid husband make a complete fool of himself with these two skanks, with a look of....pity, contempt, sadness? I wheeled my bike over to where she stood with hers...and she apologised to me, for his behaviour. We had an affair all through that summer: she turned a shy, clueless boy, into a man. Alas, by autumn, her husband had been reassigned to another country and they had to leave (he was a successful executive it seemed, they had a lovely house, rented by the company he worked for). Even back then, I knew I could never have her permanently...but I wished I could. She was... beautiful, and kind. Forty years on, I still think of her sometimes, despite being happily married for 15 years!

Certainly, you are right. Dorothy is deprived of a peaceful life with her husband because of the war. That was also the reason why she spent the night with a younger Hermie. @@lemikeyles All true - I think it is also not just about the physical longings that naturally accompany the hormonal cocktail. As it's the time when we move away from our families to a greater or lesser degree, and start to contemplate making our own way in the world, for many young boys it is also the start of spiritual longings and a desire for truth, hope and for more 'certainty' than we generally feel. We don't want to 'fail' at life. For young men to put all onto an equally aspirational but often equally confused young women is a hell of a thing. If only we knew then how to be more transparent with our deepest feelings... Problem is, we rarely recognise them then for what they truly are. Sgnd just another helpless romantic!

Boy only just returned to the one-sided original relationship to her. So the boy's feelings, she remain beautiful. And also her feelings, It is remain beautiful. So, it may be had been accepted as a beautiful love memoir that call nostalgia.

Among male singers, there are Bryan Adams and Kenny Rogers. When I think about why I fell in love with these singers, I realized that I was drawn to their voices. Because it strongly reflects the preferences of the generation that has become the mainstream of the world after generations have changed. The younger generation is curious and flocks to new things. But even as the times change, great music remainsgreat. There are cases where old songs from the 1950s became big hits in the 1980s. That's right, it's the case of [Unchained Melody] used in the movie 'Ghost'. At some point, the opportunity will come when it will be heard by the younger generation.(young people with good sensibility) Great things are good, after all! (^^♪

I felt in love with this movie as a kid. Years later I had my own Summer of '82, I was 18 and she was 22, she used to spent her vacation, usualy alone, in a old beach house, I felt deeply in love, she was so beautiful, a ballet dancer....I've never seen her again, she just disappeared...

@@lemikeyles By reading the comments we realize how universal this movie is. There is even a tribute to it in the British version of Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining", when they are watching on TV the scene where Dorothy is preparing coffee to Hermie in the kitchen...best regards!

Whenever I listen to this very melody, this recording, in this dancing rhythm, I think and remember Jennifer O'Neill acting the dancing scene. It took me some maturing years to fully understand the sharing of her pain, at this time overflowing with love within her tragic circumstance, and, in her emotional need, her womanly giving out of herself, sharing the moment with young awakening Hermie, and then, the superb silence of the music fitted that moment perfectly!
@lemikeyles

I think the best scene of this movie is the "moment when feelings melt" between a woman and a boy. The music of Michel Legrand is superimposed on it. This created the ultimate best scene. The image of Dorothy and Hermie will probably be burned into the viewer's mind forever.

Michel Legrand was such a memorable artist with the music he left us, and Sinatra singing this is also beautiful. There is some music whose beauty really touches your soul and this song is one of them, the lyrics are genius, as that's exactly what happens!

The Summer of 42 the movie was written by Herman Raucher. It was based on the memories that Herman had of Nantucket the year he was 14. He too had encounter with "an older women". The movie did catch my attention and my imagination when it came out in 1971. I think most of us during that time period was captivated by the beauty of Jennifer O'Neil. I was at 15 years of age. I dare say at that age I would really understand what love is/was about. Even though I was married for 14 years until that relationship went south. I can't say that at 68 I know any better what love is.
