A wonderful painting, and your technique with acrylic looks similar to your gouache technique. I see you use a stay wet palette with lots of colors in generous quantities. The paints looks to be heavy body type because they are so opaque in a single brush stroke. Do you add any acrylic mediums? I know it's not really magic to paint, but it looks like magic they way it so quickly comes together.

Hi, Rick. No, I don’t use acrylic mediums with my acrylics. I use golden, liquitex and a couple of colors from W&N. All heavy body. To me acrylics feel very similar to gouache by texture. I use the same painting technique with any opaque medium, even though every medium has its own limitations.. Time-lapses make painting process seem different - much faster and easier than it actually is :)

love it! Is there a criteria for you to chose a specific medium for a specific painting? Like could you do this same painting with oils or gouache?

LonelyAlien :) I usually have to decide whether I want to paint with gouache or oils because these two give completely different results. I paint with acrylics when I want to achieve a result similar to gouache but on a larger scale, on a board or canvas. I also paint with acrylics in my gouache sketchbook when I have them already squeezed in my stawet palette; just not to let them dry out. To me gouache and acrylics are very similar and oil is a completely different story, but I love them all 😍😁

thanks!!!! I just started trying to learn how to paint (before, I only drew with pens/pencils or colored with alcohol markers) and I picked gouache... so I was just wondering if I was ever gonna be able to do something like this painting or if gouache is simply not going to work for that. I'm suuuuuper new at it so I still don't even know if I chose the right medium to start learning how to paint.

LonelyAlien the thing is once you understand the main principles of painting it doesn’t matter what medium to use. I use them all the same way using almost the same approach. I fill the main shapes with color first, than ajuste them a bit, their contours; in the end I put some details and the painting is done. You just need to experiment a lot, make mistakes and learn from them. Gouache is a good medium to start with because it is water-based (no toxic solvents) and opaque (unlike watercolor) which allows you to use colors in their full strength.

Beautiful, as usual! However, which Acrylics did you use? I see that gouache is posted and not acrylic brand/type~ Thanks~

Thank you, Tami. For this painting I used Golden Acrylics (regular ones, not the open acrylics).

chrissycanvasart ah, so you weren’t talking about frosty ))) Do you mean that thing that meets the picture frame on the left and looks like a part of a boat? Yeah it looks like a mess. I just always analyze my subjects like groups of abstract objects and often don’t even think on what it is I am painting (even though I should probably be more careful with things like boats as they always have certain recognizable shapes). On the other side if you want to paint boats in a port you should paint it like a mess if you want the painting look convincing )))

There is no painting more exciting to me than this very direct, loose, bright method. Reminds me so much of my favorite artist, Charles Sovek (deceased...sovek.com). Having tried these techniques and sometimes even coming close.....it seems to me much, much long experience painting is required. VALUES, VALUES, VALUES ! Thank you and all the comments of kindred artists.

What paper you use for that? It´s can work on the normal paper?
@LenaRivo
@LenaRivo 6 жыл бұрын
It is a gessoed board, not paper. I usually use 140 lbs watercolor paper for acrylics.
