Lenco Armored Vehicle introduced to UK police

This American made Lenco Bearcat armoured vehicle is one of two bought by West Yorkshire Police and seen on display at the Emergency Services Show. The Bearcats are among several armoured vehicles to recently be used by UK police.
Nicholas Preston, Director of Preston Protection Security Solutions, gave a talk to CobraEmergency about the unique vehicle common with Special Weapons And Tactics forces in the United States of America.
The Lenco Bearcat is based on the Ford F550 chasis.

If you ignore the massive waste of money, and the additional cost to make them UK road legal, the incredibly high cost that will have been built into the deal regards supply of spare parts, the huge maintenance costs, their frequency of use, I am sure it looked a great deal

if they get a big order which you might think is very unlikely but the met police have commenced a project into looking at the operational requirements of the Jankel armoured vehicle in order to determine a good replacement for the Jankel some of which are nearly 20 years old so if the met determine that the bearcat is a good replacement then they are looking at 11 orders plus if the met do the same thing as they did with the Jankel which was give a few to neighbouring forces then we are looking at 13 orders which will likley brings costs down since it would be a bulk order and also there clearly is a need if other forces are purchasing armoured vehicles and anyway no armoured vehicle is going to be cheap for police forces even the british made jankel uses imported Ford F series trucks as the base vehicle

@@jamesevans938 I have spent the last twenty years dealing with, building and maintaining armoured vehicles, a number of British companies that produced special vehicles have gone under, through lack of orders, this purchase will be a bitter pill to swallow for many, even more so for those companies still going that could compete, instead the Police seem to be following the MoD regards outsourcing

If it's Bradford, well they should have not been feared to tread on toes and nip potential problems in the bud instead of letting it build up to a potential explosive outcome. @@Norfolkemerg It doesn't matter that they are old - why would the PSNI want a vehicle like this, it's based on vehicles designed for combat zones and is overly big for European roads, it doesn't do something an old or even new armoured Land Rover can already do - hell, Land Rover would probably add the adaptable parts for the side skirts for people to stand on and they'd be built in the UK for a significantly cheaper cost - the bearcat has absolutely no use case in the United Kingdom that a cheaper vehicle can't already do.

My local PD has one and they are great at reducing officers exposure to deadly situations. Why risk an officers life when you can just rip the wall down to a barricaded suspect? These were absolutely needed during the riots couple years back. I think they cost around $350,000 and thats around 4 years pay for a one officer, not a bad deal!

Seems rather pointless really and not set up for UK operations, it would be a hassle to use on the roads also, especially with it being LHD. The only benefit I see is that the armour would allow for projectiles and vehicles etc to hit it and save the typical police vehicles from thousands in repair costs. That being said, it won’t be there to stop the majority of cases.

As a former member of the Met I cannot ever see a time when a vehicle like this could possibly be needed. This is a military vehicle painted black and military vehicles should NEVER be used against a civilian population. I would strongly advise the people of Yorkshire to protest against this type of vehicle being deployed on the streets of Britain. For the comment from Vicky Fox I would ask this, if you think this vehicle is "fantastic" for use against terrorism, at what point? Once a terroist attack has been committed it's done. Bringing this to the street would do nothing. The ONLY use for a vehicle like this is civil control and it belongs firmly in the realm of Putin territory and not in the UK. These types of equipment should be forbidden in law to be given or purchased by civilian police authorities. They have NO place on the streets of Britain.

I will disagree on that one Sir. This isn't a military vehicle. This is a LEO vehicle made by a LEO COMPANY for the use by police officers for the safety and protection of police officers. These will be a great use for the likes of CTSFO, AFO's. Armed units when their dealing with highly dangerous individuals. So yes they have a place in this country

@@richarnold8951 It's a military vehicle marketed to police forces, nothing more - there is no logical justification for a vehicle like this in the UK, police are pretty much never shot at, most forces already have armoured vehicles that can easily handle the needs of the job like an armoured Range Rover and you have businesses in the UK who are willing to make armoured vehicles that aren't obscenely over the top for the role that they will be used for. I can think of one event off the top of my head which would require a vehicle like this and that was the 1982 Iranian Embassy Siege and evidently it wasn't needed in that case - this will show up to a shooting which has already been dealt with by Firearms offices 10-20 minutes before it even leaves the station, it'll arrive to scenes 30 minutes after firearms calls and sit around looking pretty - there is absolutely no reasonable use case for it, it's a waste of taxpayers money.
