I recalled the Geter story then, in 1983. When 60 Minutes did his story, Geter was out of prison in one week! His case was subsequently dropped. Geter and the late Mory Schaefer became life-long friends. In fact, Geter invited all of 60 Minutes staff to his wedding. Last week, yes, last week, 2024, the Feds did the same Geter script on an innocent Black Man. They claimed he did multiple crimes that could send him to prison for 200 years. His nightmare only lasted half a day- all charges were dropped and the feds are not talking why they targeted an innocent law- biding Black Man. The past of devaluing and enslaving black men insinuate itself in the present and is just as real!

I recall this story from it's original broadcast. At the time, 1982, I was between my sophomore and junior undergraduate years. One of the reasons it caught my attention, there were multiple reasons, was the fact that Jeter was an Engineer. I was a mathematics major with aspirations of becoming a double math/engineering student. I'm also a black man and, in many respects, Jeter and myself were contemporaries. Watching this piece all these decades later it's intriguing to see the cast of characters (e.g. the southern law enforcement, the district attorney, investigators, work colleagues...) I was particularly impressed with the interview testimony of the female co-worker/witness to the robbery; her comments about Jeter and the way she articulated them were at once humorous and touching. I'm so happy to hear that this egregious injustice was corrected and that Jeter was able to move on to a productive life. Thanks so much for reintroducing this story, it's been both pleasurable and informative viewing.

It's atrocious that innocent ppl are wrongfully charged, wrongfully convicted & wrongfully sentenced. What's even more atrocious...the fact that the systems refuse to admit their wrongs & admit it in a timely manner.🥀🙏💖🌱🕯️

Trump is an innocent black man with an impeccable education and reputation, who was the victim of racial profiling and was imprisoned for 16 months for an armed robbery he absolutely did not commit? Wow. How does no one else know this? Have you notified the NAACP about the racial injustices committed against Mr. Trump? My god. This is ground breaking and earth shattering news. Poor Mr. Trump. It must be difficult being a black engineer who was exonerated for an armed robbery charge. You're so right. It's EXACTLY the same. You, sir, are a mental giant and a criminal justice scholar. I, for one, will be nominating you not only for President, but also for the Nobel Peace Prize. You're doing important work, here. Bravo on your quest for racial justice and equality. Bravo, man. Godspeed.

Why TF would a young employed engineer with no criminal record rob a fast food restaurant on his lunch hour ? He was not strapped for money or on drugs or a victim of racketeering ?

@@alonzoquinones8976 Probably that, as well as, his out of state tag. They obviously don’t have educated people that enjoy reading in that community. In all honesty, it may have looked suspicious, but it was up to the no good prosecutors to do a better investigation, and they failed beyond comprehension. 😡

Every time I hear of injustice like this it saddens me, makes me angry, and it sends a chilly fear deep inside me along with despair. We do not have a solid foundation to believe in, we can only hope for fairness and honesty when confronted with accusations. Unfortunately, too many people are liars and vindictive.

Shortly after his release, Geter married his fiancée Marcia. The following year, he filed an $18 million lawsuit for his wrongful conviction against the DA and the police officers and municipalities involved. He received a $50,000 settlement from the City of Greenville. In 1987, the story of Lenell Geter’s wrongful conviction was made into a motion picture called “Guilty of Innocence.” Geter later became a church deacon, author and professional development coach, and he helped to found a nonprofit organization called Justice Denied Research Inc. #lenellgeter
