I always loved the "ambulance" example, and finally found this whole bit. From the "Berkeley Concert" CD.
I have no rights or copyright claim to this - please buy the CD.

Yup -- the first to be arrested for some made-up "obscenity" accusation. The goofiest tyhing is he was born after AND performed after, the inclusion of the 1st Amendment in the USA's Constitution. . . Carlin picked up Lenny's baton & carried it well, but the groundwork was laid by this man up there. . .

I wouldnt say he was the first edgy comic... i know Redd Foxx was doing less than wholesome comedy in the 50s, but Lenny took it to a whole different level... that being said im sure Redd pushed his comedy as far as he felt he could being a black man in that era... P.S. little fun fact, Redd Foxx was the first comic to make a comedy album, so essentially Redd Foxx had the first comedy special, and he also recorded over 50 comedy albums in his life...

Yeah, that's all I got out of it. He was before his time. Somehow his social guards were removed and he spoke what everybody else was guarding and it was somewhat enlightening and entertaining. To take it any further than that would be a stretch. It was a quantum leap in analyzing and speaking about society. But that period of time was the changing of the guard, the 60's came and drugs removed everybody's social filters. But beyond that for further enlightenment one must go a bit deeper.

@spb7883
@spb7883 5 жыл бұрын
That’s right. It’s part of the cultural fabric of censorship, this Puritan streak in us. But don’t forget that one of the reasons when Bruce died, the New Left was just beginning to influence and take over (which they eventually did) the New Deal Left. The latter was an older generation, culturally more conservative and thus more accepting of its Puritanism. Those people were just as offended by Bruce as self-described political conservatives. This is one of the reasons he was so controversial. Now we have a generation of self-styled leftists for who the sins of their fathers - particularly with respect to free speech - are the sins of the New Left. This is why so much entertainment that I grew up enjoying in part because of its subversiveness is now anathema on the so-called left: what was once rightly viewed as a reaction to crippling cultural conservatism is now seen as egregious masculinity, white privilege, or cultural appropriation. But here’s the paradox: the Millennial and post-Millennial left - while often ahistorical - are nevertheless historically minded enough to realize Bruce has been dead 50+ years. However, in the absence of their awareness - indeed, in many cases their outright dismissal - of Bruce’s context, of a repressive society where the police can arrest a performer for saying certain words in public, this Millennial and post-Millennial left fails to consider they are reviving that old, socially conservative left. In other words, they may think they are progressing beyond their parents, but they are really regressing to their great-grandparents.

How things have changed....now it’s ‘cancel, suppression’ culture, fear of self thought. Never imagined Berkeley would flip and become the fascist they are today. Scary asf times...when Berkeley support fascists and DT is a president. Really really really really weird.

I think you mean Insecure. Also no one is afraid of words they are outraged by them. It is true that sometimes people say things other people don't like, and the people say "I don't like that, what you said is wrong and disgusting you shouldn't say it again. ". They aren't compelling them to stop talking forever, they are asking them to be better people.

If Lenny were alive and performing today he would be banned from every social media platform, blacklisted from TV and clubs and would be lucky if he didn't get arrested for telling jokes down on the 3st Promenade. The kicker is he wouldn't really be saying anything obscene really. He would just make too many people feel uncomfortable and poke too many buttons. An that would just be his "clean" shows. Let's not get started on his late night blue light specials.

I'm not sure this particular clip was considered controversial but Lenny as a whole was a very controversial comic in his time. He got arrested a few times for saying things like cocksucker and come (in the sexual meaning) on stage. Obviously those are words that no one would bat an eye at these days. It's obvious that you wouldn't hear his act in 2020 and think anything of it considering he got arrested back then for words no one care about today. You can kinda see how conservative society was then compared to now.

@@beautifulsurprise9424 Yes. He was controversial, but what was the purpose of this video? There was nothing controversial, nor was there anything particularly insightful or funny. Again, what did this video highlight/reveal about Lenny that helps today's generation understand his impact or importance?

Men seek, women choose. Men are valueless compared to women, because a man need only take a couple minutes to make his contribution to the procreative act, a woman takes at least 9 months, plus maybe a couple years during which she needs to breast feed and bond with the baby. It's a biological bottleneck that defines the sexes. Men are cheap, so we love very broadly, we have to be chosen and we have to take what we can get. We have to work hard to make ourselves valuable enough to be worth it. Women love very selectively, and specifically, they love ASPECTS of a man, not the man himself. They love what he can do, what he has achieved; what he has to offer her. A man loves the woman that chooses him, he doesn't understand that she only loves what she chose him for, and when that's gone, so is he.

+Beef Chavez Just because our intercourse contribution is more minimal, doesn't define us as human beings. If it wasn't for men, women would be traipsing through swamps to find eggs, the ones you eat for breakfast I mean. Men even invented agriculture. There are a good number of things that women do by men and children, that are lot less than cool, and family unfriendly, or at least they make the family not worth having.

Big Dick I don't agree: Early Carlin from just after is funny, Pryor is funny in 1976 when I was just born but I only get snippets of humour from this. The context defense is hogwash. Great comedy transcends time I guess

Yes you are right. Thank you for not being a dick and insulting the guy. You are spot on. Although I disagree on LB, I think it was rose-tinted zeitgeist hipster pressure for am lot of people, especially the younger fans. However, everyone is different. My favourite comic ever is Doug Stanhope. If I spoke to someone and they told me they just didn't find him funny I would be literally unable to conceive of that opinion. I bet fans of Lenny, Bill Hicks, Eddie Izzard, Dane Cook, and Lee Evans would be the same if I told them I found those guys unfunny. Don't see why there needs to be insults about his death and abuse to posters for fairly levelled opinions

I am glad someone else said it. I love comedy and I understand things were different then but I have tried and he is just not funny. I like Carlin, Richard Pryor. But Bruce is rambling stoner drivel. Also I think Bill Hicks is a tedious repetitive bore, an intellectualist snob who thought liking rock music and reading books and seeing that drugs could be used creatively made him some sort of untouchable genius, a hack who uses childish sound effects to turn a one minute joke into six. And used that crucifix not being what Jesus wants to see when he comes back in EVERY show. But most people worship him and would crucify me for saying this. Just as they do with Bruce. However I would bet my life savings that if you polygraph tested all Hicks/Bruce fans to answer if they liked either of the aforementioned because of zeitgeist pressure, to look cool, or because they are supposed to, any reason other than they find his comedy funny, I bet the majority of people aged 50 or under would fail. BTW this is my wifes profile so keep the death threats aimed at me. My name is Martin
