I first learned about Packard cars while playing LA Noire on Xbox 360. Set in 1949, characters in the game seemed to hold them in high esteem. The late forties Packards were especially beautiful!

Despite the extra-baggy cut, this subtle wide plaid print blazer is a pretty fashion-forward choice for Jay Leno.

The story Jay tells about Perry Como brought to mind a song that a (now deceased) friend had a big hit with in the late 40's or early 50's. It was called "I Never See Maggie Alone" and it was sung by Kenny Roberts.

The fit of jay's jacket is horrible. Compare it to the excellent fit of Osbornes' jacket. Denim definately better. At 2:20, I wish I knew where Jay heard that dash used to be a word for horse manure. I've researched every source I can think of and can't find any mention of dash = manure.

@@Kawiturbo750 Jay alluded to the fact that he was "tricked" into doing the segment. I suspect he didn't show up with a jacket and Mr. Oswald dug one up for him. The dead give-away is that he's wearing a t-shirt under it.I do miss his well tailored attire when he was on the Tonight Show. Of course, at that time he had a wardrobe person to put that look together for him.

@@Kawiturbo750 a simple "dashboard horse manure" returns at least 12 hits that relate the two, some of them supported by bibliographical sources dating the 50's. So learn how to Google, maybe? "And if you’re still wondering about dashboards, well these were originally devices at the front of horse-drawn wagons upon which the driver rested his feet. They kept mud and road waste (collectively known as dash) thrown up by the horses’ hooves from spraying onto the driver. Mudguards developed from these dashboards and while their appearance has altered substantially over the years, their major function - protection from dirt, stones and slush - hasn’t altered. Dashboards have changed a lot too."

It's interesting that, in 1908, the perceived function of the car was to replace the horse, where 5-8 miles an hour travel was normal and expected performance, especially on dirt and block roads.

I'm so glad Mr. Leno has chosen to use his resources to preserve a historic collection of automobiles and other machinery for generations now and in the future to enjoy. The chaperone seat reminds me of HL Mencken's Girl from Red Lion PA - about a young woman who was spooning in the parlor with her beau, with grandpa in attendance, but then grandpa fell asleep and things went to their logical conclusion - so she ran away to big city (Baltimore) to join a house of prostitution, because, she reasoned, that's what happened to "ruined" girls in all the cheap fiction she'd ever read. Menken and a policeman explained that this was not actually necessary and put her on a train back home, where she was welcomed back into the bosom of her loving family - and subsequently married to said beau, of course.

The enormous, sprawling Packard plant in Detroit basically still sits idle today years after someone from Peru bought it at auction without much of a realistic plan. It’s hard to believe that a company that was so far ahead of its time failed so completely and that a city known for the auto has moved on and left the remains in ruins probably for many more decades. Perhaps someone could get government grants to turn it into a center for making robotics which is our future. Our cars and virtually everything major in our yard will one day be robotic. It would be nice to merge the two concepts to once again move Detroit forward while holding on to a bit of its history. This is an article that was in Cranes this year. “The South American developer who purchased the crumbling Packard Plant in 2013 with ambitious redevelopment plans now owes almost twice what he paid for the site and is facing foreclosure. Crain's Detroit Business finds Fernando Palazuelo has accrued a little over $820,000 in back taxes and unpaid water and sewerage bills at the sprawling plant synonymous with Detroit's decline. That's even more than the $774,723 he owed in October when he vowed to pay a chunk of the debt back by the end of 2020. The properties with three years of past due taxes face foreclosure if they're not paid back by March, meaning they would return to the same tax auction where Palazuelo picked them up. In an email to Crain's, Palazuelo blamed the languishing project on pandemic related losses at his other businesses. "As you are well aware, our efforts at the Packard Plant are funded entirely from our operations in Lima and other areas of the world where the commercial operations of the tenants in our buildings have been on government-imposed shutdown for the past year. However, we are fully aware of the amount needed to pay past due taxes and the extreme drainage fee assessments for our Detroit properties prior to the end of March and are making arrangements to ensure that those amounts are paid well in advance of the deadline." Fernando Palazuelo. (Photo: Packard Plant project website) After seven years of limited activity at the site, word came last fall that Palazuelo was backing off his grand vision to convert the site into a hub for commercial activity, dining and art. According to reports, he had begun seeking industrial buyers or tenants and would demolish portions of the site. In 2017, he told the Detroit News, “I'm committed to the success of this project. I assure you, we will not fail." Once again an interesting vlog post by a great team. These two men could do a 2 man show around the country around a few cars - a bit like “ What I wore” or whatever it was called that I saw Off Broadway over a decade ago. It had a great rotating cast. Humans are infinitely interested in our own cultures and those of others. The modern US since the late 1800s was all about moving forward in a dynamic way but in the tracks of this progress culture took hold - and I know I appreciate the process that got us to this point. Life is all about the journey. Once you hit your initial destination you have already moved on.

I see Mr. Leno has put on his museum jacket (not denim!) and found a museum friend. Next he needs to get some museum napkins and move on to some museum massage oils! It has also occurred to me that he needs a museum band to follow him around and provide background music for his museum adventures! A Klezmer band would provide the proper ambiance for this.

Gentlemen don't forget that up to WWII, the majority of rural America was farming with horses, and all homes had a horse/carriage barn behind every home, a large wood shed, and an out house. These pioneer automobiles were space ships. Horses and oxen were always pulling early motorist out of trouble and back to the barn 🐴🤣🐴😂🇺🇲

Let’s talk about manufacturing history which shouldn’t be marginalized. The first Packard in this discussion was made in Warren Ohio, home of the Packard Bro’s. Yes Packard relocated to Detroit. The Winton was made abt 50 miles from Warren in Cleveland Ohio, incidentally Cleveland was the home of Rockefeller’s Standard Oil founded in 1870. Although Standard removed it headquarters to New York in 1885, NE Ohio & Western Pennsylvania, the largest producers of oil in the world, played a roll in determining what the “modern” auto would become. Is this post about regional pride? To a degree but when we explore/enjoy the history these cars it should be remembered that early on the men making them were diverse and dispersed around the country. The “Space Race” was predated by the “Get around the place race” and the creative juice that fostered that desire wasn’t located only in the great city of Detroit. It was in the machine shops, bicycle shops and minds of men all over the. Then there were those bicycles guys in Dayton! Desire can breed beautiful solutions.
