Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5 Gen 8 14" with AMD Ryzen 7000 Review

A follow up to my previous comment. My Ideapad Pro 5 16arp8 arrived two weeks ago after multiple delays and here's my quick thoughts on it. It's the Ryzen 7 7735HS variant with 32gb of ram. Hardware: The display, although being only 2.5K is quite amazing for a 16 inch. It has decent brightness both indoors and outdoors. The colour accuracy is very very good; amazing for entertainment such as watching netflix and etc. I asked a professional photographer friend of mine to give it a go and she said the colour accuracy is good enough for professional colour grading in something like Photoshop - I'll talk more about performance in such applications later on. The built quality is very good with full aluminium build apart from the plastic display bezels. It's fairly light for a 16 inch laptop. The keyboard is has fair key travel and it's a great typing experience. The touchpad is a chef's kiss. It's one of my favourite parts about the laptop. It's really big and the glass finish on top makes it really smooth to use. Clicks are mechanical and not haptic so that's a plus for me (albeit some might prefer the haptic touchpad clicks). The webcam is decent with the windows Hello IR face unlock working like a charm. Now for the battery. It's a 4-cell 75Wh battery, and for what it's worth, it's really good. It can last unplugged for at least 6-8 hours on a regular day with no performance heavy usage. I'll talk more about performance and battery later on. I watched Oppenheimer at full brightness and when the film ended, the battery was around 75% from the 100% I started with. I'll test it again wirh other films too. So to sum it up, hardware is really good and for me, there's nothing to complain about. Performance and software: In the performance category, it does really well. It'll do everyday tasks like web browsing and content consumption with no sweat. Windows 11 feels smooth to use and programs open easily and quickly. For a regular user, the laptop has more than enough performance. Now let's talk about performance heavy workloads. And for that, the Ryzen 7 7735HS paired with the 32 gigabytes of DDR5 ram does not disappoint. If you're a power user, you won't have to worry much. It runs professional software like Photoshop, Premier Pro, AutoCAD, Blender and VS Code really well. Of course it's no Pro level performance but it's enough to get things done. The laptop also handles CPU intensive tasks pretty well. But I wouldn't bet much on graphic intensive professional workloads. My variant doesn't come with a dedicated graphics card (though the Ryzen 7 7840HS variant can be equipped with an RTX 4050 or higher). It does come with an integrated Radeon 680m graphics card, which I'll talk more about later. It's meh for graphics intensive professional work but it's surprisingly good for gaming. You can also press FN + Q to toggle between power modes; switch to performance mode if you want everything to go full gear. WARNING: Keep in mind the fact that once you start doing performance heavy tasks, it'll take a huge toll on the battery. If you're unplugged, the computer will try saving battery and throttles the performance down accordingly. This is not noticeable in everyday tasks but it becomes very obvious once you start doing performance heavy tasks. You won't be getting the most outta what the laptop can offer so my advice is to keep it plugged in if you're going heavy duty. Thought I mention that although it's a known thing with Windows laptops. For gaming, it does it really well. For not having a dedicated graphics card, it's very impressive on how well it does in heavy games. Of course you won't be running triple A titles at high graphics and expect good fps, but for most games, it'll do just fine. The Ryzen 7 7735HS has very good gaming performance. But the main highlight of the show is the Radeon 680m Integrated graphics card (iGPU) that comes with the Rembrandt Refresh series CPU. The 680m handles most games really well. GTA V will do 70-80 FPS on high settings so that's already good for me. Other games like Forza Horizon 4 at high settings will have stable 60fps with v-sync enabled, War Thunder at recommended settings will have 100-120fps in Air combat and 70-90 fps in ground, Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered does well over 100fps. I haven't tested many games, but from what I can tell, the CPU, iGPU paired with 32gb of ram can handle a lotta games really well. So performance wise, you're getting a ton for what you're paying, and for me, I paid a little over 800 USD for my variant. This is my somewhat full review on the Lenovo IdeaPad Pro 5 16ARP8. I'm writing this on the 25th of November 2023 and so far, so good. If anything happens to the laptop, software or hardware wise, I'll post an update on it. Thanks for reading.

@@chilko I have only older zenbook for comparison. Build quality is lower, gets easier bumps then my old laptop but I would say that it's durable. Battery life is good, I easily get 9 hours web dev. Keyboard feels cheap in some buttons because they feel bit louder. Overall it's good laptop 31GB ram and 1TB storage for 800€ get student discount;) I dislike screen brightness I keep my laptop almost always at 80-90% because it feels very dimm and there's already some color bleed. Screen comparing to dell ultrasharp two years old. I hope this helps.

From my use of the Lenovo Ideapad pro 5 14inch, I have the exact same specs as the one you tested in the video. I can agree that the touchpad is quite bad as I came from a macbook pro but the way to fix the double click isssue is quite simple, I just kept the sensitivity of the touchpad on low so that clicking down on the touchpad itself will not trigger a double click. My biggest issue from compared to my macbook pro would be the battery life as it is almost half that of the macbook, however the charger is very good and with rapid charging enabled, it charges up in no time. I prefer not to run demanding software on battery life so I keep to browsing and when I do want to use more of the performance side I just hook it up to a monitor and keep it on charge. So far no major issues and I do think it was worth my money. Although one thing you mentioned was different. My model only runs 60Hertz I am not sure why and I am sure my laptop has the same specs.

The BIOS Update released on 10th of October 2023 didn't fix the fan curve. It was not in the release notes, but I decided to try it. Unfortunately, the fan curve remained the same.

My unit came with the latest BIOS, which is still MKCN25WW. If there is an update, I will try it out. The fans also run on battery, even if the temperatures are lower. The thing is, the fan curve is nowhere near as aggressive and at least for me, the noise is not at all annoying, when the laptop is on battery. When you connect the charging cable, the fans go to a lot higher RPM though.

great review! i would like to ask 2 questions: - do you have any info on why it does not support variable refresh rates (60-120hz)? the hw should support it and i heard that the 16" version does have it, so it just seems weird, like a driver issue. - even though you disliked the touchpad, does it at least have a good-feeling surface? not that it should be macbook level, but simply nice sliding for a windows touchpad.

Regarding the refresh rate: I guess it is a panel limitation. I can't find anything on the Lenovo page about variable refresh rate. I don't know, if there is really any laptop panel in this price segment that offers variable refresh rate. Regarding the touchpad: The surface is nice and smooth and the fingers slide nicely on it. I didn't find information in the specs, if the touchpad is glass or plastic. If it is not mentioned, I assume that it is the cheaper option, which is plastic. But in terms of actual smoothness, it feels really close to the MacBooks.

I believe that most modern 120(+) hz screens should support windows dynamic refresh rate (and actually a lot of similar laptops support it, just as the 16" version of the IdeaPad), as it is not necessarily some special hardware feature, but should be basically limited by the windows support for the panel and the driver. I can only hope that it might come in an update, to improve the battery life. - I am at least happy that the touchpad surface feels good, because that cannot be fixed by updates, but maybe they can fix the clicking problem with software improvements.

I actually get mine, 7840HS 16" version. I use Linux and VRR is automatically detected and enabled by default in KDE desktop enviroment. The range of the refresh rate comes from 45 to 120Hz. Also, the trackpack driver works pretty well. It doesnt fell like macbooks, but the gestures and tap precision works well. The only iuses that I have are: the fan curve cannot be controlled by sysfanctl (yet) and the driver of the keyboard backlight is unfinished. When the boot process ends and main system starts, the lights of the keyboard shuts til next reboot. (it said that is a driver issue also) Also minor bugs and missdetects like de iGPU being detected like a dedicated gpu by AMDGPU driver and AMD P-states that pushes the clocks higher than needs eventually (this will be fixed in next kernel 6.6 driver) EDIT: typo, im not native english user.

It is not a Mac so scaling does NOT affect battery life! Windows 10 and 11 has significantly better and faster GUI compared to any macOS version. Scaling on Mac sucks hard. Gaming in 1920 x 1200 works flawlessly, no issues with scaling at all.

My 100W power brick the laptop came with is smaller than the Mac's 70W brick..Also, you really DO NOT want the power cable to be integrated, it is good that is detachable from the actual charger!

The 100W power brick that comes with this laptop has only detachable cable for the outlet portion. I assume so it can be easier for Lenovo to use in in different markets. As far as I can see, the USB-C cable that comes out from the brick itself is not detachable. For me, it is a lot less convenient than the Apple Charging Bricks, because the brick itself is in the middle of the cable. The laptop is also kinda picky about charging bricks, cables and voltages. My Intel MacBook Pro 16 charges with all kind of chargers. Even a 20W phone one. The Lenovo doesn't.

If you are planning to do some actual work or more serious programming on this laptop, get 32 GB of RAM. 16 GB is just not enough. Especially, when you consider that 2 GB will go for the iGPU. 32 GB is also not much these days, but it is at least usable. I used it only for some small personal stuff and interviews so far and it is ok, but the moment you start using Docker Containers or have multiple projects open, you will run into issues. Furthermore, for serious programming work, I will upgrade the SSD. The standard ones, as I mentioned in the review, have no DRAM, which will be bad with big projects. At least you won't have any overheating and thermal throttling issues. The rest of the things (keyboard, touchpad, display, external displays etc.) I mentioned in the review.

Yes I have the same situation where cpu is throttled to 15 20w with usb c hub, do you have the issue where display britghtness is not linear it is dim until 75 percent and then it is super bright from 75 to 100 percent

Oh, I understand then. Fans are not loud they are just audible in quite room or without headphones. They are not loud as gaming laptops like not even close. It has one good thing that this laptop is never warm to the touch like never. Throttling is not noticable it will be on benchmarks but in general usage not way. Maybe if you are compiling large code it will be 10- 15% slower but noting too much, in that case also fans are always quite because they do not need to spin more than 15%@@pawew8687

In your opinion, is this laptop (when not excessively stressed) quiet enough to be able to use it in silent environments like classes, libraries and whatnot? When on battery, definitely. When connected to the charger in a very quiet room, you will be able to hear it. The thing is, in a public environment, even in a library, where everyone else is studying, there will be always more noise from something else. So, if the noise is your only concern, I would say go for it. Depending on where you live, you will probably have 14 day return period. And there is always the hope that Lenovo will push a new BIOS update and fix this. Furthermore, the a bit higher than normal noise during idle, is a bit compensated, when you start to push the laptop. The cooling system is good and more than adequate to handle the Ryzen 7 7840HS, when under heavy load. Under load, my MacBook Pro 16 from 2019 is a lot more annoying than the Lenovo, while being quieter for lighter tasks.

The fans of my machine barely comes on. I think your machine uses some really old BIOS maybe? I barely hear them even under gaming. And are definetly off during general use, browsing, youtube, etc.

The BIOS version that I manually installed, is from October 2023. The newer BIOS version from December 2023 doesn't mention anything about the fans in the changelog. I haven't tried it yet. The fans are not that loud under full load/gaming, but describing the noise from them as "barely hear" is not fair. During general use, when the laptop is not plugged in, the fans are really quiet. If you plug-in the laptop, it uses a different fan curve and the fans are a bit louder and can definitely be heard.

terrible fan curves! at 36 degrees it reduces the speed to a minimum, which is comfortable for work, but the operating temperature in tasks is 38-50 and it turns out they are always noisy...the same noise and speed of the fans are the same at 38 and at 63 degrees) if the temperature does not rise higher 39 it remains quiet, if more, it makes noise like at 60 degrees. It's stupid and noisy...it's absolutely uncomfortable to work with

I haven't done a full 100%-0% test to measure it, but should be about 8 hours for basic browsing and KZbin. Regarding the configuration and Intel+GPU vs AMD: If it is with the iGPU only, then definitely AMD. The Ryzen 7 is definitely faster, more efficient and cooler than the Intel. It is also a bit cheaper. The version with the nVidia 3050 will definitely be better for some games and some applications, which use the GPU. Although it is not really a great GPU at all. The version with RTX 3050 is definitely a lot more expensive though. I'm not sure, if I would spend 1100 Euros for i5 13500H, RTX 3050, 16GB RAM and 512 GB SSD. The version with i7 is 150 Euros more and you can't get 32 GB with it. At least in Germany.

The issue applies for 14" users, and umfortunately for them, Lenovo did not promise how long it will take to fix it. Edit: my only issue was that I received the laptop with 512GB instead of 1 TB. They messed up my order basically.

@@htpoh65o5mh5yo5 I am very happy with the 16 inch version. It is for most part the same as 14 inch I want to point out the pros and cons compared to it. Pro's of the 16inch: •You can add extra Nvme 2280 SSD, so you can expand your storage quite a lot •The laptop will have more 'breathing room' hence why the fans function better compared to the 14 inch I guess. •In my opinion; 16 inch laptops have the perfect seize for keyboards. I don't think I would feel comfortable with the keyboard of a smaller laptop. But this is just my opinion. Cons: •Display is worse than the one that 14 inch has. The 16 inch display is still decent though. •Can't be opened with one hand •Quite big, not easily portable like 14 inch.

I couldn't open my unit without scratching it. I have the iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit and the plastic pics don't fit it the gap around the bottom cover. So I can't remove the bottom lid with the plastic tools. One has to use a metal prying tool, I think, because the gap is too small. At least on my unit. A metal tool will definitely leave some small scratches. Since the laptop is new and I don't really need to open it right now, I decided to not open it. The reviewer wrote that he upgraded the SSD to a Samsung 970 Evo Plus. The 970 Evo Plus however is single-sided, so there might be issues with a double sided SSD.

yes. too bad they screwed up with the fans running at idle temperatures. This would be a great laptop without that flaw. even worse so because unlike you mentioned there is no way to alter this behaviour with 3rd party apps. The mainboard features no controller that could read out the fan RPM or give access to its controlls. So 3rd party apps dont receive any informations either. Its basically a hidden BIOS table with plain "if cpu temperature reads >x °C then output y volts to the fans". Easy fix if Lenovo cares, no way to work around this as a user.

I totally missed that. I checked in HWInfo and couldn't see an RPM readout for the fans. Which means exactly what you said: There won't be an option to control the fans through software in Windows.

IGPU uses 4GB VRAM and not 2GB.

You can only pre-allocate up to 2GB in the BIOS. Windows will dynamically use more of the RAM as VRAM, if it is available and needed

Weird scaling issues are not a thing anymore. Stop keeping this myth alive that every monitor must be at 100% usable. The only scenario where weird scaling issues happen, is with programs that are like 700 years old. Please don't recommend low-resolution screens just for this reason.

It is a tough one to decide. I haven't tried the Yoga Slim 7. The Yoga Slim 7 has the Yoga Display Hinge. I'm not a fan of it, to be honest. If you don't plan to use the hinge features, then I don't see the point of paying extra for it. It also has 1 less USB-A port. However, it can be configured with an nVidia RTX 3050 or RTX 4050 GPU, which might bring you some benefits depending on your workflow.

The M1 is nowhere near in performance. The 7840HS trumps M3 dude. Also, a 16" macbook pro is around 2.500€ here vs a decent version of this is around 1.000€. Not even a contest. Especially with the latest macOS ventura and its countless flaws and performance issues. I have sent back my mac some days ago...

Man, next time pls do comparison with another Windows laptop with the same specs, as there are users which dont tolerate IOS crap operating system. literally never use in real life in for sure will never use at work.

The first 10 seconds of your videos show a lot of mistakes. 1. It does not have ddr5 but lpddr5x, it's not the same. If you were a chad, you would have checked if it had a 128bit or 64 bit ram, (In cmd run the command "wmic memorychip get devicelocator, datawidth" ) 2. The laptop you choose has Wi-Fi 6E not 6 and the hardware for Bluetooth 5.2, but there are some software limits in Windows I think, that makes this unsure at the moment. If you had any idea what you were doing, you would have checked psref lenovo
