OLED screens win hands down vs any other technology. You don't notice how bad backlit screens are until you place one next to an OLED. The infinite contrast with perfect blacks is unbeatable. It's why TV stores place the LG TVs on a separate shelf so the comparison is not as obvious. I've bought the legion 7i a couple months ago and had this exact same debate. I prioritize the ram over all the extra features the G16 has. I always have multiple applications running doing different tasks, so the ram always is close to maxing out even at 32 gigs. Also, right now the Lenovo legion is $1850 or $1700 on BestBuy while the g16 with 16 gigs is $1600 on best buy. The g16 with 32 gigs is $2200 on ASUS. That makes the legion a decent amount cheaper than the g16 with the same ram capacity. The screen of the g16 does look great but I personally don't really care for oled. The 3k screen is more than enough for me coming from a 1080p 60 HZ monitor. Battery life doesn't matter to me since I don't really bring my laptop out other than twice a week. And the places where I bring it has outlets so it doesn't matter. The legions battery does suck though. The speakers are not bad on this laptop but could be better. I use headphones so I don't really care. The g16 does have a lot more benefits compared to the Lenovo legion 7i, but I'd rather gets the legion for the price and for the ram. I know I'm missing out on a lot of features, but I have been enjoying the laptop and had not had any issues whatsoever. Great video though.

I think both laptops are good and I narrowed my choices down to these two. I was going to go for the Legion but when I looked at both side by side in the store - the superior build quality and the OLED with gsync (stunning night and day difference) and the AMD processor made my decision easy to go for the G16. I also don’t like num pad keyboards. The speakers also sound night and day difference - I do like to play without headphones sometimes or watch movies without headphones. The G16 was only $200 more so I decided it was worth it. I don’t care about soldered RAM 32GB will be great for gaming for a long time and likely will want to get a new laptop for other reasons before 32GB is a gaming problem. If you need this for really intense content creation then you have a different use case and should be maxing out GPU and RAM. @The101damnations2 ай бұрын
16 gigs is already not quite enough for gaming in 2024. For video editing at 4k, you're going to have an even tougher time. Even if you get the 32 gig version, for video editing, chances are you will still run into ram limitations way before the CPU/GPU start to limit you. That's why upgradable ram should probably be a priority for you.

Best buy has the 4070 AMD G16 with 32 GB and 2TB ssd for $2299. That’s a decent price for the build quality of a MacBook Pro and the OLED Gsync with pretty good specs. If money is an issue and your video/photo work is casual 16GB can be fine for you. If it’s a lot more intense and you are doing it under time constraints - I think you know 16GB won’t be ideal. 16GB is also a fading spec for gaming nowadays a lot more than it used to be. Think about spending a bit more if you can. I was about to order the 32 GB Legion for $200 less because I think it’s a nice gaming laptop. but then changed it to the G16. Like the reviewer said the G16 is for buyers who value the build and the OLED and still have a good gaming spec. If you don’t mind plastic and don’t care about the blatantly obvious superior OLED gsync you won’t care. It’s a night and day difference side by side and both are very close in performance in general. Both makers have a solid reputation so I was fine going with either one I don’t feel any stake in a brand war between them. I looked at both in the store - and watched many reviews. The G16 just seems way nicer and I prefer the AMD processor. I don’t care about upgradable RAM. 32GB is going to be fine for many years for gaming. You will want a new laptop for other reasons before you would find the 32 GB to be a bottleneck. And should be good for content creation. Also the AMD processor is superior for content creation. But…If you need massive RAM for intense content creation that’s a different use case and priority over gaming. If you just do casual photo/video editing you should be fine with 16GB.

I have both the g16 and 7i right now and although I do like some of the design choices lenovo made like having the power and hdmi ports in the rear, side by side the g16 looks smaller than the 7i and you can definitely tell in weight. I do find the 7i runs much cooler than the g16 but the lenovo fan curve is way more aggressive so it is a bit louder than the g16 with ghelper. I cant comment on game wise because my g16 has the 4080 and the 7i the 4070 but the lenovo does not run games as well as the g16 in 1440p. The 7i screen is not as good but it is a really great panel. An amazing video! These are one of the best gaming laptops! Can you also compare ASUS Zephyrus G16 with Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i? Because it's a more portable and creator-focused version of the Legion 7i: It has better portability, being thinner and lighter with a much longer battery life. It has a better MiniLED screen and speakers as well. It can be configured up to 4070, so it can definitely be used for gaming.

@@davitdavid7165 Might as well avoid any consumer laptop then since they all have a chance of breaking, but yes the side power button is known to fail and the non-ideal solution is to not shut down the laptop completely which is what I do so you don't have to touch the power button
@davitdavid71652 ай бұрын
@@Exotic-9780 no, there are degrees to how long a design lasts. Yes, a 200 dollar laptop will break in a year, that is to be expected. Yes, even a 400 dollar laptop will fail after years of abuse. But this? Every time you use the button you fatigue a couple small metal parts and more importantly a bit of plastic soldered to the motherboard. If the plastic fails you either solder a new power button thing to your motherboard or, more likely, get a new board. There is a seperete restart hole, but it has the exact same design. For premium multi thousand dollar products to have a problem like this is embarrasing. Lenovo could easily fix the issue with little cost while keeping the design identical. But they wont. You will have to buy a new laptop right after the warrenty expires. And maybe you buy another premium laptop that breaks in 2 years. Some people probably think that is normal, which is crazy. We need to push back against it and warn each other of such issues.
@Exotic-97802 ай бұрын
@@davitdavid7165 It shouldn't be normal to have to replace your laptop every two years due to a design flaw I agree with this it is unacceptable, the reason for my first sentence with the first reply is because consumer laptops tend to run into quality control issues more often but you could consider this issue seperate from that, regardless Lenovo cannot keep getting away with cheaping out on something as important as a power button which could fail and make the entire laptop unusable

numberpad on the legion is my deal breaker for two reasons: 1) having a numpad means no room for good top sided speakers. lenovo laptops will never have competitive audio quality because of their numpad hysteria. 2) looks dumb and creates an off center trackpad. the design will never look nor feel as sleek as designs without a numpad. if you are a numpad defender, that's your opinion. but compromising audio and design for something that can be added via 3rd party hardware for less than $20 will forever be a dumb decision in my eyes.

@megapro1252 ай бұрын
Couldn't disagree more. I use headphones 99% of the time so I rarely ever need the speakers and if you need to present something on the laptop meeting rooms usually have speakers if the built in speakers can't get the job done. A number pad makes numeric inputs much faster and more comfortable also it gives you access to input special characters like "±" by their ASCII codes instead of having to google them or search through a special character menu. You can even use it in a lot of simulation heavy games that often have a lot of inputs. An external numpad is another unnecessary dongle to keep lugging around.
@isaacpiegat67352 ай бұрын
@megapro125 valid take, but a niche case where a numpad proves to be more useful than audio. point is the general population doesn't need a numpad, and if you do there are easy solutions. can't buy better laptop speakers :)
@megapro1252 ай бұрын
@isaacpiegat6735 I don't think it is as niche as you think it is. I can see how to many reviewers this wouldn't even occur as they have a whole stack of laptops by nature of their job but most people probably don't have two dedicated laptops for gaming and their day to day office tool for taxes and what have you. I obviously can't speak for everyone but that's what I'd assume at least. The argument "you can just get an external numpad" applies the same to speakers / a soundbar so I guess it's good there are options for both kinds of keyboards on the market.

So I was in the same boat as you a few months back, I bought the g16 AMD version at launch, and honestly, the g16 is a freaking AMAZING laptop, but it all depends on how you use it. For me it's a desktop replacement, I sold my ITX desktop build and sidegraded over to a G16, and the desk setup is a LG 45in oled + keyboard/mouse. While this is a pretty great laptop, there's some serious limitations with the formfactor, the 4070 in the G16 does not performance as well as higher TDP models in slightly larger laptops. But the CPU is a freaking BEAST. So I thought, okay I will run this laptop for a year or two, and when I notice performance degradation in new games, I will grab an eGPU dock and use that, but this laptop only has USB4 aka Thunderbolt 3 (maybe 3.5 you could make the argument) so you're going to be bandwidth limited. Overall it's an amazing laptop, but if you use it as any sort of desktop replacement you will be disappointed. But ultimately it's about price, the G14 is going to drop down to around 1200usd with a 4070 during blackfriday (same price it was during the back to school sales at the end of the summer), is the g16 worth 2x the price?

the 2023 version of the legion was terrible I had to return it, it wasn't a laptop it was a pricey desktop jet-engine with good keyboard (when it wasn't burning ur fingers) and bad accessories. I had to clean it even tho it was brand new right from lenovo. It was well packaged I was impressed with the packaging but the laptop had to be dusted and wiped down cause all the dust and it even had some very small visible liquid stains on the bottom by the vents....the terribly budget looking velcrove strap it came with was vomit worthy completely covered in little bits of dirt on the sticky end....it wasn't something u clean its something u throw away. Not a great look considering a decade ago the velcrove strap I got with my ideapad was 'actual velcrove' and actually clean...its sitting on the floor for a decade and still looks clean. Anyone telling u the speakers r okay or good are LYING. These were second only to the wii remote speakers in quality. Gaming on them....literally shot static out. Couldn't even listen to podcasts. And anyone telling u the legion IPS displays are good is lying. It was so depressingly bad. No setting made it better, its like the grocery store newsprint...better than newspaper but still terrible. My decade old ideapad has a WAAAaAAY nicer display and it was 1/3 the price and can game...cause these were "multimedia laptops" aka the gaming lineup of lenovo back then. Would only consider the legions if u want a desktop in laptop form aka ur going to be hooking it up to external mouse/monitor/speakers/everything....and ur getting the slim model so ur really getting worse gear for lighter carry weight....dont think for a second u can put the 2023 model on ur lap....ur going to regret that. if u want it for that purpose I would definitely recommend going i7 and 2k display, NOT the i9 and 3k display....in the hopes that improves the thermals and the screen experience but who knows it might be just as bad. If you want to have some fun try and trick the keyboard into burning your finger. They might have patched it by now but in the 2023 there was always a delay between when the keyboard deck cooling system would turn-on for the top-middle keys when they weren't in use (even when gaming if I didnt use the middle keys long enough it would turn off the fans for the middle of the deck and they would get hoooooot) and u were swapping to higher performance tasks. U could touch like the 6 or 7 key on accident and get some skin blown off when doing some 2002 era gaming on balanced mode. U could literally, wakingup from sleep, load a 2003 game up and within 4minutes of playing on balanced accidently touch the 7 key and burn ur finger....FROM FROSTY COOL SLEEP....it was 'wow'.

Instead of nerfing the GPU (which is normally fair), they decided to nerf the CPU. So you get mediocre CPU and with a good GPU. Then poopoo battery life. @@onionpeeler2023 $1399 is the lowest price it has been. It will likely hit that price again if you’re willing to wait.

Why not compare to the i7 pro? It's better

@@yeetergriffin7679 they’re too different. Thick, heavy, battery hungry and cheaper materials with more power vs thin, light, battery-friendly, and more premium features with less power. Just kinda opposite ends of the spectrum

There is no competition vs that battery life and that oled display 😅

Hope they do tandem oled on ces or miniled because I don’t want oled. If no I guess I’ll settle with w MacBook plus mini pc to stream games to Mac display.
