I am very happy with Legion laptops. The port layout is by far the selling point of the Legion brand laptops, however this time around there is something that I find very disturbing. The first is that the GPU is been giving a pointless 140Wats when 120 is more than enough. The remaining wattage could be used in feeding the CPU be it Intel or AMD. I don't know whether or not the new AI chip inside the new Legions would automatically compensate for the difference in power once it realizes that 120Wats is sufficient on the GPU. This would be very interesting. Even a BIOS update would suffice for such a shift in power. As always terrific review. I always enjoy seeing Legion reviews from you and other content creators. Keep up the good work. Although on a personal note, I would say the 4070 is the way to go and if you are going to go higher then definitely take the 4090.
@NotebookcheckReviews
@NotebookcheckReviews Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your feedback and your kind words. I agree; the 140W for the RTX 4070 and 4060 is pretty pointless since the GPU rarely takes advantage of it. The 4070/4060 are great choices for smaller and slimmer gaming notebooks (like the Flow X16, for example), and the chunkier models make the most sense with the 4080/4090. But that is, of course, also another budget range entirely. 'Especially since the Legion is a great gaming notebook with either GPU.

It's good to see such tight competition between the two major CPU brands. Of course, for the same price, I'd take the 4070 over the 4060 given they are so close. The fans sounded surprisingly pleasant, too. But really, my biggest takeaway is that the market is *screaming* for the 7800M, as I can't help but feel bad about these still being 8 GB. An Advantage Edition of the L5P could be amazing, and likely even cheaper than the 4070.
@NotebookcheckReviews
@NotebookcheckReviews Жыл бұрын
Competition is always good for us in the end. So a well-placed mobile AMD card would certainly be welcome. The same price was for both 4070 configs. They have been within 100$ if I recall correctly. But it seems like Lenovo is changing its asking price every other day.

that's because they are smaller and more dense. The bigger the chips are (less dense node, transistors further from each other), the higher clocks and lower temperatures at the same wattage, but also the more power they need overall for the same performance

How does it not matter when the AMD chip clearly runs hotter? AMD's CPU constantly hits the mid-90s and when you have an option to go with Intel, get similar performance and keep those temps in low 80s, then there is a clear winner IMO. You shouldn't equivocate, people come to your videos to get advice on these specific questions and you just like to sit on a fence.
@NotebookcheckReviews
@NotebookcheckReviews Жыл бұрын
I gave you guys precisely that information, did I not? In addition, it seems like this is how these chips operate since most Zen4 CPUs we tested so far operate at a similar temperature, so I would not generally say it is bad per se. And I prefer to give you guys our results so you can make up your own mind than to make our reviews all about my opinion. I understand if that is not decisive enough for some, but that is how we want to handle it.
@panic_diver
@panic_diver Жыл бұрын
@@NotebookcheckReviews And based on your final conclusion many of your viewers who are not tech savvy will get the AMD powered CPU who then will be heartbroken seeing CPU temperatures hitting high 90s on a new laptop. Later, they will spend a lot of time on the internet trying to find ways to bring those temperatures down and will be forced to make many visits to their local computer shops if its something then cant do themselves, and still the issue wont be resolved because lenovo already uses one of the best thermal pastes in their systems. This all could have been avoided if you had just steered them towards the better alternative in your "comparison review". The final impact on the end user is not much different when a company misleads a customer by not clearly mentioning all the product info. For example, a manufacturer like MSI that doesn't clearly mention GPU power draw for their GPUs in the product info, I talked to 2 dejected people just today online who bought a MSI Cyborg with a 4060 and later realized that it is limited to just 45W. If the reviewer they had watched clearly mentioned that the 4060 in a MSI Cyborg is hobbled and had advised them to avoid MSI Cyborg because they would be leaving 33% performance on the table, they would not have to spend the next few days trying to return their product, if there is even an option for them to return. Anyway, I think you should be more clear and offer better advice because not everybody is that informed who does thorough research, and its hard for many to form their own opinions and they come to online reviewers like you to get help, obviously, you think otherwise and thats alright. Have a good day.
@NotebookcheckReviews
@NotebookcheckReviews Жыл бұрын
I get your point, but I think this particular situation is very different from your example. Low TDP values will definitely impact the user, whereas high CPU temps (that are very common on a lot of different machines) will not. And it’s still the question if it’s actually that bad, since these chips are still running „at spec“ But I will of course take your feedback into account for our new videos! I will put more emphasis on temperature and high load behavior anyways in the future! And maybe we can do some more testing if there are any long-term problems with high CPU temps, or if it’s just the way manufacturers design their cooling solutions these days. It’s just very difficult for us to do long-term tests! Thanks a ton for your feedback tho, I really appreciate it when you guys take the time to keep us on our toes to reevaluate and question our information! These discussions are extremely valuable for all of us!

@@NotebookcheckReviews I disagree with the statement that high CPU temperature will not impact the user. The single biggest concern while using a high performance gaming laptop is how well it manages to cool the system to prevent thermal throttling. Every year companies pour so many resources to design better cooling systems and chassis. Cooling is the biggest problem in such a small form factor. If a laptop fails in that department then everything else simply does not matter. That is why any respected reviewer should spend a good chunk of time talking in depth about the thermals because 100 nits difference in screen brightness or a better wifi are secondary and irrelevant if the cooling is not on point in a gaming laptop. Most CPUs today are rated to run at 100 degree C, so your statement that we are not certain about about the impact of running in high 90s on long term health and that it is not necessarily catastrophic which will fry the CPU may be true but we are absolutely certain that the laptop will 100% thermal throttle when it hits those high temperatures nearing thermal limit. A CPU that is running in mid 90s out of the box will reach that thermal limit within a month as it gets a little dirty and little dust particles get into the fans and grills. And nothing ruins a gaming experience more than stuttering caused by a thermal throttling CPU, all other specs don't mean anything and its a garbage experience. Lenovo 5i with intel and 5 with AMD have the same chassis with the same cooling system so its definitely not a matter of a manufacturer designing a cooling system in two different ways, thus, the 15 deg C difference is only because of the different CPUs (and even if the cooling systems are different thats exactly what we are comparing and reviewing, we are trying to find out the better cooling design in order to avoid hitting thermal limits). Lets look at it another way, if you had a choice between these two systems where everything is similar including the CPU performance but one CPU runs just below 80 C, far away from thermal throttling limit and one in mid 90s already approaching that limit, which one would you choose? I personally would choose the cooler system, its a no-brainer decision because dealing with thermal throttling is the single biggest issue plaguing gaming laptop users around the world and is a nightmare to deal with. If a friend or family came to me for advice on choosing between those 2 systems, I would die before letting them choose the much hotter system. And I would offer the same advice if anyone asked the same question online. I simple cannot recommend a CPU running at 95 deg C when there is an alternative in the exact same machine with same power running at 80 deg C. And that is the reason people trust youtube channels like "Gamers Nexus" and "Jaystwocents" over most others, if they reviewed these exact 2 machines, they would spend at least half of the review talking about the drastic difference between the thermals in two configurations with the same chassis and exact same cooling solution, they would not beat around the bush and equivocate and will tell it how it is like they are recommending to a friend because they care about their customers and don't mince words. I just wish you would recommend your viewers like you would recommend your friends and family if you want to gain long term trust. Well, that's my opinion, anyway, you do you. All the best.

So i have the 13700hx 4060 , 240hz variant. When i play games that generate lots of fps over 240 like LoL, Valorant or Csgo i do get either input lag or screen tearing. Note that on some games i cap the fps to the monitors refresh rate (240) but the symptoms persist. Do you guys think that screen might be problematic or i need to reinstall display drivers?

True, but if a couple of percent during different benchmark matter in the end when it comes to user experience?! It also runs considerably hotter. But yeah, the 7745HX is a great chip, and so is the 13700HX. I think it is fantastic that we get equal options from both Intel and AMD this year.

Well, couldn't the higher heat be attributed to the higher tier GPU? Their heatsinks are interconnected after all. It would've been more conclusive if the amd laptop also had a 4060 in it.
