Just like the XG270QG, Lenovo's wide-gamut, QHD, nano-IPS Legion Y27q-20 has great response times. But with my new data, it's actually hanging with the super-fast 240 Hz 1080p screens! Check out the review to see how!

Thank you so much for such a thorough and epic review. I just ordered this monitor and I was hoping I'd find a review of this magnitude. I'm going to be very happy with it! It'll be replacing my LG27G83A-B. I opted for the Lenovo as it supports VRR over HDMI @1440P/144HZ, and for the Xbox Series X that's a big deal. Unfortunately both the LG27G83A-B and LG27GL850 cap HDMI VRR at 100hz over HDMI if using 1440p.

@@ApertureGrille Absolutely. It arrives tomorrow, so I can compare the Blacklight bleed to my LG27G83A-B. It's not LGs Nano-IPS panel, but its still considered a good choice. amazing review ! I'm glad you finally got a monitor for review, you're movin' on up! :) Ive got me a DTP-94 Colorimeter (and i saw your own colorimeter in this video) which made me wonder.. id actually like to know how you use yours w/HCFR (which i also have) to calibrate your CRT.. but also how to calibrate any LCD?? IMO, you should consider making a video about this.. maybe covering how to do a White Point Balance (calibrated Greyscale for lowest Delta E)? And describe how to calibrate for a certain Nits level, and why? (i see you use 180..) Also how to calibrate for certain gamma? :D Just a suggestion, Modern guides on this are like nonexistent... and youre the only guy whose guide I'd trust. ;)

Thanks! I saw your great comment about the BenQ XL2720Z, but I'm not good at KZbin so I can't find it any more. But that monitor sounds amazing. If I can find either the 27" or 24" version, I'll jump at it. When I first started calibrating the CRT, I got that same DTP-94 you have on eBay based on spacediver's recommendation. The i1Display Pro Plus is a bit faster, but they're much the same. And same thing with HCFR; I got into that based on his guide. All the grayscale balance, delta E, and gamma data for this Lenovo review was pulled from HCFR, I just fancied it up by pulling the data from the exported xls file. I'll look into putting together some guides.
@CubanLegend561
@CubanLegend561 3 жыл бұрын
@@ApertureGrille Yeah i pulled my DTP-94 out and ran it in automatic, then LCD mode, in HCFR and i was able to get a Delta E of 0.6 with a max of 1.4 on this XL2720Z i have.. in the Blacklight strobing mode (using Standard mode as a base & User Color Temp @ RGB 97-99-100)! :D And without Strobing i also had similar Delta E's with max of about 2.1! The great thing about the 27inch version.. is that i run it in 1080p, but I use Nvidia DSR to run it in 1.78x mode (which is 2560x1440p) and i adjusted my monitor sharpness to 8, and i adjusted my Windows Cleartype font, so that it actually LOOKS very close to a native 27" 1440p screen (plus i get to run it in 1440p at all of my 1080p refresh rates.. UP TO 250HZ!!!). I just helped a buddy setup a his first PC with the ASUS VG27AQ you reviewed... and this XL2720Z is very close to looking 1440p when tuned right, the PPI isn't there obviously, but the subpixel data allows for all text to be readable and the scaler supersampling helps sharpen ALL the ingame edges that would be aliased at 1080p. Also here's a link to the comment i made on the XL2720Z.. hope this works: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnWlaqaFg8t9a7M&lc=Ugxz8AmI5-t98TNWLCV4AaABAg.9GDAzQ9JwYj9HAttogVkoE just so you know there's tons of threads of mods, tweaks and discoveries on it, and data on it in the Blurbusters forums. If you land one, I can save you all the trouble and i can send you my CRU .bin file that has all my custom resolutions and VT tweaks included. :)

I do my image editing in GIMP, and you can tell it to us a profile to get a decent clamp, but that ICC profile has to be accurate for it to work properly. But that's the problem. RTINGs also reviewed the Y27q-20, and they used different OSD settings for their calibration than what I used. That's why I'd rather not distribute my ICC profile; I have no idea whether it would make someone else's calibration better or worse. But it is a good topic to discuss. I may do a future video talking about how color management works, what applications ignore it, etc. But it's always best if the monitor has a proper sRGB mode in the OSD, so you don't have to deal with the software stuff.

What program and settings do you recommend for calibrating a monitor? I have an i1 Display Studio but I don't really like the software it comes with. Are there any settings you recommend in a specific software to try out? Also do you feel the Lenovo Legion Y27q-20 is overall better than the Asus VG27AQ?

Since you already have a great colorimeter, it's easy to let DisplayCal run through hundreds of color patches to profile your display, and for most people, I'd tell them to just do that. DisplayCal only asks you to use the OSD controls to get the white point close to 6500 K; everything else is corrected with the profile. But I don't find that useful to do a proper OSD calibration, and none of the measurements I've presented in the review use software profiling. Software profiles are often ignored by games and things like KZbin, leaving you with, essentially, an uncalibrated display. So instead, I use a program called HCFR, which allows me to take quick measurements after each OSD change to dial in color temp., gamma, etc. I can also make sure I'm not clipping or crushing colors at the top and bottom end respectively. There's still benefits to be had using DisplayCal AFTER you've done everything you can with a monitor's OSD, though, especially on a wide-gamut panel like this Lenovo.

I’ve had this monitor for 6 months with my GTX 1070 and I’ve been able to avoid the black screen issue by changing the display settings in windows to 144hz. Thanks for the news about the coming firmware update though, would be nice to use the monitor at its advertised 165hz.

Can you share the 1.3 beta firmware you were given to fix the black screen issue? I'm about to return this monitor and leave a 1 star review for it. I do like the monitor, but I purchased it before I found out about the black screen issue. It's making games unplayable for me and I don't feel like waiting potentially weeks or months for a "promised" fix from Lenovo.

Sorry, I can't. All I know is that the firmware is undergoing testing now, and I suppose they need to test across a large variety of hardware configurations. Bandanner posted a thread on Lenovo's forums here: forums.lenovo.com/t5/Y-Gaming-Accessories-Curved-Gaming-Monitors/Y27q-20-firmware/m-p/5055376 You can at least let them know about your situation. It may help them to list what video card you're using. Maybe that'll spur them on.

Have you had any problems with the Lenovo being connected to a Display Port and disconnecting from your PC when you turn off the monitor or the PC goes to sleep? With the ASUS VG27AQ disconnects any time I turn off the monitor or the PC goes to sleep. I have a dual monitor set up, this appears to be an issue if you have more than one monitor. These problems don't exist when connected via HDMI but there's no G-SYNC in HDMI.
@ApertureGrille

I don't think I completely understand your setup, but I have the VG27AQ and Lenovo here side by side. WIth the Lenovo as the primary, connected via DP, and the VG27AQ connected as the second monitor via HDMI, if I power off the Lenovo, the secondary desktop doesn't change. It still shows up in Display Properties. When I turn it back on, there's a brief instant where it disconnects, so the desktop icons get set to the VG27AQ, but that quickly reverts back to normal.

The reason VG27AQ got slow is because it use older AUO panel. The XG279Q, XB273U GS, MAG274QRF-QD, XB273U GX, XV272U X these model are AUO latest Fast IPS panels. Which even faster than LG Nano and without low contrast problem.

Great video! I returned this monitor after about 3 days of fighting with it. I too had a 10 series GPU but I didn't get blackouts, I just had a lack of clarity/sharpness and text looked blurry. I'm not sure if it was my GPU but I tried everything and could not resolve it. There is no setting for 'sharpness' in the menu. It was good for gaming, bad for my day job... 👍

That might be a difference in how NVIDIA and AMD implement VRR. I don't like that 120 Hz solution, though, since you're losing out on the top end of the refresh rate. Try contacting Lenovo support. They may be able to find some solution for AMD cards.

One thing to note, these monitors also have coil whine while in standby. It's really not bad since it doesn't happen while it's in use, but some people may find it annoying while their computer is off. Personally I have to be within a foot of the screen to notice it, so I don't mind, even with my PC in my room.

I've seen a lot of people get really bad eye strain from Nano-IPS monitors. I'm thinking it's caused by the spectral distribution of the backlight. It could be because of oversaturated colors but they sometimes don't have any issues with other wide gamut monitors. It could also be the red phosphor. People usually complain about the red color. Would you say that it's comfortable to look at when working on desktop?
@ApertureGrille

I've been using the Lenovo for about two weeks, and I've had no issues so far. But I was using a CRT as my main monitor up until 2015, so my eyes/brain are broken in like an old pair of boots. The backlight doesn't use PWM dimming, so it could be the spectral distribution. I've heard similar things about laser projectors causing eye-fatigue. Btw, thank you for posting my videos on r/Monitors!
