Wow, so cool! I had no idea how much of a difference some sanding makes. I I love the amount of effort you put into a system as old as this. My heart breaks when I see second hand laptops or systems no one is picking up and they just get thrown away :( Good videos! Love your stuff.

Good video. When I build a socket 1700 cpu build or AM5, I always use an aftermarket CPU Contact Frame. It was originally meant to stop the cpu from bending but it also lowers temps by 7 or 8 degrees (for 1700 cpu's) and keep thermal paste off the motherboard. They only cost around $10 on Amazon. A cpu contact frame plate like that would be awesome for this, hopefully someone could fabricate some for socket 1150.

I have two systems running LGA1700 sockets, and that's all I use are contact frames. The temps do drop a bit. Your mileage may vary on the temp drop. I use them mainly to keep the stock locking frames from bending the CPU over time.

I can't believe companies like this think it's okay to sell products with poor heatsink quality when it's literally mandatory to get good cooling in such tiny PCs...

I mean Kias and Hyundais sold cars with sand and trash in the engine for a few years before it made any news.

Its sad because there was once a time when profit was only part of the goal. Companies took pride in what they did and customers not only benefited from that but also looked for those companies because they knew they'd get a good product, or at least the company would stand behind them and repair/replace if there's a problem. Now in these days its 100% profit driven. I remember Saturn in the 90's. Love em or hate em, they took pride in what they did. I remember working on my car and many times finding signatures of people under dash panels or other parts from the assembly line workers. I later saw an interview where workers admitted to doing this as they were proud of the work they did. Not to mention the Saturn homecoming, where owners would drive to the Saturn plant from all over the US to hang out with other owners and the company. As soon as GM took a larger stake in the company, the homecomings were canceled and the quality went downhill fast. Its no wonder they failed.

@@jims_junk To be fair it was probably fine for the original 35w TDP CPU, those things barely need a cooler at all. Not that it's OK to have such shoddy workmanship but I've often sadly found OEM machines fail to cool properly on some level or another so not surprised.

@@funnbuntv I literally paid extra money to get decent cooling capabilities on every computer I owned. Cooling is mandatory. Selling a PC with such faulty cooling should not be allowed.

I've since taken apart my Optiplex 3060 Micro and the coldplate was pretty flat from what I see so I didn't lap it. Replacing the thermal paste made a bigger difference and cut down about 10C of idle temp. I considered getting another Optiplex Micro to harvest the case and cut it and slap a 120mm fan on the top but opted against it since that would cost me ~20 USD for a barebones Optiplex 3040 Micro (case + mobo) alone. Instead I chose to get a Delta BFB1012VH blower fan for a bit under 5USD. So far i testing the Optiplex 3060M tends to be at 72C under load at 29C ambient, but with the Delta fan it was 65C. With an Arctic P12 on top with the 3060M case open it was more of 69C so that Delta fan blows hard. Coincidentally the Delta blower fan fits nicely at the front vents of the Optiplex Micro which is nice, but I'll have to make a nicer power supply and mounting setup for the Delta fan though because it can blow itself away LOL.

I have the SFF flavor. 3770 and 8 GB RAM. With a GT 710 and a fancy wifi card adapter, it wound up being my first fully functional Hackintosh. Still looking for a suitable case to transplant the board into something that’ll fit a real gpu

Shame that heatsink is such an issue, looks like a nifty little machine otherwise. Personally I think trying to expand the width of the case so you could mount like a 120mm fan on the door could've been a good idea when Lenovo were designing it and tbh, even having twice the width wouldn't compromise it's compact nature in my opinion.

I'll have to look closer at the heatsink of the Optiplex 3060 Micro (i5 8500T) I got recently as I was seeing 58~60C on idle when I was testing it on a 32C environment. My solution for now is to point an 80mm fan to the front of the 3060M to help push air out the back which does work and the case isn't warm to the touch in that setup. Not sure how uneven the coldplate of its aluminum heatsink block until I can check it but I may attempt lapping it if needed.

Funny, i sat with the execpt same model yesterday, that i have in my LAB for a re-paste, due to high temps, idled at 50ish and under semi load 75-80ish degress c, i noticed the same pattens and rougnees in the heatsink, like you said, and i tought the same , that it was bad proccsing by Lenovo, but did not consider to sand it, but i am going to get some paper right now, and give it a try, on mine when i changed the TIM and cleaned the fan and all, i noticed that the heatsink had an excessive ammount of thermal paste, witch could be there way of trying to mask this, i assume it is the original by Lenovo, i know its an old pc but i was expecting better QC to be honest, will try going for wet paper a set with 300-1000, wil post an update later, thanks 👌

i managed to get it smooth unfortunely i cant uplaod the picture in here, i went with 120 grid std paper and 300,600,1000 wet took aprox 45min and 100 strokes in 5 passes of 20, in all 8 directions, straight and diagonaly both ways, the s shape disapered, so i dont think there is a an evapor in the heatsink, now it is straight as an arrow

This is the reason building your own mini pc is better but the downside is the power supplies are not efficient in low wattage. OEM have custom power bricks for the system unit like this. I cant get lower than 50w idle than this oem one.
