The fingerprint reader is in the RIGHT place. If it's on the ower button, you risk clicking it in and Windows will power down or hibernate, while trying to logon. That's just mental to me. When you're trying to login, you already have your hands near the keyboard or touchpad. So the fingerprint near that, makes total sense.

ThinkPads are supposed to be ThinkPads, not macbooks. I don't understand the obsession with bigger trackpads. If anything, it is easier to type if you have a smaller or nonexistent trackpad. As a happy owner of a 5th gen X1 Carbon, the value proposition comes down to what kind of person you are. If you want a laptop that you can buy, and continue using for a LONG time, the X1 is a great choice. I’m a full time college student, and my tech doesn’t get treated nicely (think regular dropping on hard floors). My computer sustained virtually no physical damage, and the selection of ports are as stiff as day one. Buy a Surface laptop if you want a great computer for a few years, buy a Carbon if you want a good computer for a decade.
@btw1116 жыл бұрын
100% agreed. I use one in the service industry as a technician, and it has been dropped off ladders with only minor blemishes to the corners. The 5th gen is Rock solid, I can only hope that the 6th gen will be exactly the same build quality.

How's the battery life been? I have a surface pro 4 that (at whoppin 2 years old) is dying on me and I'm looking for a laptop that'll actually last (that's not a Mac)
@btw1116 жыл бұрын
The battery life on the X1 is pretty impressive. When it was new, I could easily expect 7-10hrs of battery (with standard settings), after about 4 years of heavy use and a decent amount of abuse, I still see 5-8hrs (again, depending on use.) My only complaint I have with mine is the necessity for the LAN adapter/dongle when using a wired network connection. As a service tech who is using the LAN connection constantly, it's a little inconvenient, and the dongle has started to show signs of wear. With this type of use though I can easily expect that. That is the only complaint I can come up with about it.

My dad works in it so I grew up learning to use it, I feel stupid using a trackpad
@summushieremiasclarkson47005 жыл бұрын
I actually prefer more precise input, so I set the sensitivity on the trackpoint to medium and turn off acceleration.
@xuanpuqian69425 жыл бұрын
Trackpoints are just so easy and precise when you get used to it. Trackpads always feel glitchy on any non-apple laptop. I don't get why people do not enjoy the trackpoints. It's like one of the best inventions on a laptop IMO.
@ruelsmith5 жыл бұрын
The smaller track pad prevents you from accidentally touching it while typing and getting strange mouse movements.

Outdated excuse from 2015, plenty of manufacturers have much bigger trackpads with better palm rejection and no ghost touches.

@Artyomthewalrus6 жыл бұрын
DSLRs will be gone by 2045 (or atleast as popular as film cameras today) They are already losing market share to mirrorless cameras, I would be suprised if dslrs were still dominant in the market place ten years from now. Of course mirrorless cameras will also eventually fall to cellphones or whatever camera tech comes next

Do laptop manufacturers realize that virtually no user (not even power users) actually uses the Kensington lock?
@garysimcox3456 жыл бұрын
Lumi I believe it’s just supposed to tether the device to a certain area so you can’t physically steal it, which is only something you’d need on a business laptop with very valuable info on it. I don’t get why they put them on consumer laptops, nobody uses them lols
@MultiCjrox6 жыл бұрын
Gary Simcox do you realize that they have them on there so that retailers can have them out on display safely?
@garysimcox3456 жыл бұрын
MultiCjrox I don’t see why there’s a reason to include them in production devices though. There are many ultrabooks without Kensington lock ports that are put on display and stores still find ways to secure them properly.
@getsomegoodstuff6 жыл бұрын
Actually my dad's work place has Kensington locks because it's really necessary that other departments can't use your laptop. So only if you bring it home with you is it not locked and then your access to the sensitive stuff is limited due to not being on the network. I have a feeling my mom's workplace is considering it but both of their work places are pretty high in security requirements across the board so it's not exactly the norm. So the department access is limited inside the company which stops un-authorized users from accessing it. BTW this is not a consumer laptop but a corporate business laptop with the required security just sold to consumers as a secondary market because my dad is getting this laptop or something similar.
@sgradone6 жыл бұрын
Gary Simcox because there is a demand for them in the market and it's cheaper to make less variations of a product.
@reoencarcelado59042 жыл бұрын
(For anyone reading this) For those who weren't born in 1986 or before: The so-called "nub" / "mouse nipple" = is actually called a "Pointing Stick". The so-called "trackpad" = is actually called a "Touchpad". ("Trackpoint" is actually a proprietary name given by IBM (and later Lenovo). Similar to "Kleenex", "Velcro", and "Xerox" (in that they are all proprietary-names)). P.S. @Linus-Sebastian (& anyone-else complaining-about the-pointing-stick): Here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXmboJJjbMd-f7c (A Tutorial on how-to-use the pointing-stick). Also: As far as I know, the switched-places "Function" (ie. Fn) and "Control" (ie. Ctrl) keyboard-keys were done for Ergonomy reasons. The spacebar acts as the function-button to turn on-&-off the keyboard-backlight, and the Fn key was moved to the lower-left-hand-corner to make it easier to find in the dark. [Here's an interview in which the inventor/designer/originator/creator about it discusses it:] kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKCydHebnrmgd9E

This is funny to watch after other thinkpad videos which all complained about the trackpad being too big and only one button, while demanding this trackpad back into the future versions. Also this version has centered keyboard which many of the new ones don't have so this is pretty much perfect thinkpad if you ignore the price and non-existant repairability.

Thats actually a good point. I still use the E535 I picked up for 400€ about 6 years ago. I took it to university everyday, traveled with it and even had a bike accident with it beeing my backpack. The thing still works like a charm! Undo four screws and you can easily clean the fan. Undo two more and you can put new thermal paste on the CPU. Thinkpads are build to last, and they do. Best 400€ I´ve ever spend.
@aldorandomprojects21796 жыл бұрын
I still have a w530, and is still a damn beast. upgraded to the max with a core i7, 32 gigs of ram, 256gb msata SSD, 2tb HDD, and 1TB SDD on cd room expansion bay, added two extra USB 3.0 sub ports with a expresscard adapter, and finally, replaced the LCD pannel with a full HD one. for a computer that is about 7 years old, I'd say is a damn impressive machine.

If you put a trackpad on a laptop reviewers will talk about it. If you don't want them to talk about it, either put a good trackpad or remove it altogether making the trackpoint the only navigation input on the laptop.

Daniel Smallwood The X1's I've had a chance to use always have something wrong with them. Either the display is bad, the hinges are shot, the touchpad is unresponsive, or literally anything and everything else. Never the first gen machines though, they're weirdly one of the most reliable machines I've ever used or sold - If I had a first gen x1 with the chassis of a 5th or 6th I'd be happy, seriously one of the most comfortable thin&lights to use despite its flaws.
