Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro, the second generation Yoga Windows 8 convertible Ultrabook. After buying it and playing with it, it's really a paradigm shift of how you operate Windows. Does take some getting used to. Windows app store is sorely lacking, so I stick to lots of web apps (anything google has to be run from a browser). The other annoying thing, is that the bluetooth driver is really buggy. I bought a MS Sculpt mouse and it intermittently works. It'll work for a good hour or so then blip. Nothing. Checking the lenovo forums shows that I'm not the only one feeling this pain. I'm relegated to a wired mouse until they fix their BT driver. Other than that, the screen is gorgeous, the touch ability is amazing and the flipping ability to watch movies or do a presentation is a very nice feature. I love the weight of it. So damn light, and doesn't feel cheap. My 2 cents :)

I have the i7, 256gb SSD, and 8gb of ram model. I also owned a Macbook Air early 2013 model with the same specs before and I can say that the Lenovo is definitely the better value. I bought my Lenovo for $1200. A Macbook Air with the same specs costs $1550 on Apples website. Reasons to buy the Macbook Air over the Yoga 2 pro: 1. Incredible Battery life. It's nearly double the Yoga 2 pros. You will never run out of juice unless you don't charge it regularly. (Please consider though that the Lenovos battery has to work harder in order to power the screen and the touch screen) 2. Aesthetic and build quality. It looks and feels amazing. I'm sure many people have picked macs for their looks alone. 3. Crazy amounts of accessories. There are literally hundreds of cases, sleeves, stickers, and bags designed specifically for the Macbook air. That's probably why the design has stayed the same for so long. I can't find anything specifically made for my Yoga 2. 4. 1 more USB 3.0 and 802.11ac Dual Band wifi card. (The wifi Card in the Lenovo can be swapped out for around $40, but you'll have to do it yourself. I should also mention that the wifi issues people were having with the Yoga 2 Pro when it was released have been resolved through a software update. My unit was not one of the originals so I had no problem with wifi) To be honest though, I'm pretty sure most people reading this don't have a 5ghz router so it really wouldn't bother most people. 4. Better Trackpad. The Trackpad on the Macbook Air is still the best in the industry. It's very easy to use and actually kind of fun. I also like the dimmable keyboard. Reasons to buy the Yoga 2 Pro over the Macbook Air: 1. Value. The Macbook Air with the same Specs as my Yoga 2 pro costs $350 more. 2. Build quality: It may not be as Beautiful as the Macbook Air. But is is a bit thinner over all and the rubberized paint actually feels really nice. 3. Touch Screen: The touchscreen is as good as an iPads. Also Windows 8 is much easier to navigate with a touch screen, and being able to touch things on the screen is actually sometimes faster than using a mouse because the distance between the keys and the screen is very close. A 13" touchscreen is just really fun. 4. The Display. the Display on the Lenovo is incredible. The resolution is literally double that of the Macbook Air. (The yellow color issue people were having when the lenovo first was released have been solved with an update that now ships with every unit.) The only problem is that windows 8 is not optimized for 3200x1800. So you'll have to do some tweaking in the display settings. This is something I can guarantee will be resolved as more and more ultra high res laptops are released. 5. The Various yoga modes: The fact that the yoga can flip around is really fun. I wouldn't say it adds anything really productive or truly useful. But I think it just makes the Laptop more enjoyable to use. 6. The windows OS: I know many people (including me) like the Mac OS, but the fact of the matter is that pretty much everyone and their grandmother uses Windows and many things are optimized for windows first, and then gets ported over to Macs. So this is all just my opinion with some facts sprinkled in. Please don't hate me, I'm just speaking from my experience. Also any grammatical errors in this comparison do not reflect upon my intelligence. I'm just tired, and halfway through this I started wondering why I was typing all this anyways.

What really is the impact of not being "optimized" for 3200x1800 really dp?

The impact is that everything on my display is really tiny when I have my monitor set to the highest resolution. The reason this happens is because the OS determines how big icons and writing are by the number of pixels. So say the google chrome icon is supposed to be a hundred pixels tall. On a normal display that will be just fine. bust on super high res displays this presents a problem because they pixels are significantly smaller. on the Yoga 2 pro the pixels are around three to four times smaller than a 1080p display. This means everything in windows is 3 to four times smaller. Which kind of sucks. This can be corrected in the display settings of windows 8.1, but because I also connect to an external monitor I am unable to use this fix because it only allows me to choose one icon size for both monitors, which a dumb mistake on microsofts part.

This is an awesome machine! I purchased my black (color not mentioned in this presentation, probably not available at the time the video was made) I5 on sale at Best Buy for $899, a tremendous value. After two months of usage I am still quite impressed with a number of features. The super hi res display is beautiful, yellow issues having been resolved, the keyboard gives great tactile feedback and the new style backlighting is a plus, the touch screen interface is exceptional and the speakers are quite loud for this type of device. On the downside, the Windows app availability is pretty weak, the black does show fingerprints pretty easily and connectivity to my Bluetooth Jawbone Jambox can usually only be achieved by restarting the device once the remote speaker is in paring mode. This video review was a very well done and an accurate, concise presentation of this product. Overall, I would strongly recommend this device to anyone looking for a lot of value in an under $1000 laptop/notebook.

We've been having a HUGE problem with Wi-fi connectivity with this convertible. Use your google-fu and look into this issue before even considering buying this device. A lot of people are experiencing similar problems, I'd probably return it if I could, but we procrastinated...frustrating, because in some ways it IS a good machine. Lenovo, from what I've seen, has not been particularly responsive, either. There are giant threads on the wi-fi issue on various forums.

Sorry, forgot to add that my machine was manf'd in 2013 and doesn't have dual band wireless, either. That seems to be what fixes at least some of the wi-fi issues...but there are some folks who've swapped cards and haven't seen much improvement, either. (And also that potentially swapping out the card yourself might void the warranty...not cool, Lenovo.)

That's not this model, That either the ThinkPad or IdeaPad can't remember of the top of my head, When you flip the screen a keyboard surround moves up and locks the keyboard in place so it's more of a flat surface.

***** thank you for your informative comment and it shure did answer many of my questions, always good to hear a consumers opinion and not just journalists! :) I'm actually impressed by the yoga 2, but because I am a developer I need to pair it up to one or more monitors and use it as a desktop when I need it. I will also do some multitasking and use heavy programs and files. I will also use it as a server for some tests, can it handle that? I know that a real desktop is better suited for the stuff I'm doing but I'm on the go and I want something that I can transport and use outside still having my data with me. Touch isn't a must for me but it seems to be practical and time-saving. And I will also play minecraft on it. One thing that I can tell you is that my budget has changed: now 1400$. I'm still thinking between this or the macbook pro w/retina 13" 8Gb ram. Both OSX and WIN8 is accepted by me. Thanks! -AD

About changing wifi cards: Lenovo whitelists which cards can be used with each model (very few obscure).

Looks like a lovely little machine to get for college! I've had it recommended to me, and all the reviews I've seen places it at the top. I am a bit of a digital artist, though, and while it's a little disappointing that it doesn't have capabilities with the Wacom pen, I (a) haven't seen much yet about the think pad, (b) can't even touch the screen of my current school-issued macbook anyway, and (c) own a Wacom Intuos multi-touch that I only just bought this fall. My question, (stupid as it sounds, as it IS a laptop, after all, but I need to double check somehow) is whether or not I can plug the tablet in and have it work like it does out of my USB port in my Macbook. Does one or both USB ports support that, and does the device itself support the "Wacom Utility" application that allows the tablet to read my pen-strokes?

Lisa, Would you recommend this or the Thinkpad Yoga? Because I am using it for school, I would prefer the active digitizer in the Thinkpad. However, this will also be my daily computer at home, so I wonder if the ultra hd screen, being as good as you say, outweighs the full 1080p with the active digitizer.
