For the first example, why does the current go clockwise? If it goes clockwise, you have field lines coming towards you in the center, but away from on the outside. If so, only some field lines oppose the the magnetic field. It seems to me the neither direction would make more sense.

all his explanations are correct except the right hand part..that thumb he shows can move both sides...so just assume that ur thumb points in the direction of magnetic field and curl your fingers,you will get the direction
