I really admire your method, Leo. Editing together a song with cuts at the bar or stanza and IDs corresponding to the sources is an excellent way to appreciate the successes and failures of models and emulations. Listening to the result is much more relevant to actual playing musicians than isolated lines separated by many seconds. Even though the latter can potentially show much smaller differences - potentially, that is - the former is actually music. Very smart choice. Also, I’d like to point out the playback mixes are done with a very high degree of accuracy. Level changes are nowhere to be heard, edits are flawless. I don’t know anyone else who gives us such accuracy and musical integrity.

@senorchivo905 ай бұрын
This! I've had the Ampero II Stomp from release week and recently got the HX Stomp XL because Line 6 kept putting out killer updates that meant I could retire more and more individual specialty pedals. In the time since release, the Ampero II Stomp has gotten 3 minor versions (1.1, 1.2, 1.3), with the most substantial one being the recent 1.3 update. In that same timeframe, Line 6 has released 4 minor versions (3.15, 3.50, 3.60, 3.70), with each one being as least as substantial as the Ampero 1.3 update, simply because Helix has a 6 year head start and bigger R&D department. Device manufacturers need to do more than keep pace with Line 6 (which Ampero hasn't), they need to catch up if they want to truly compete.
@danielhunt25105 ай бұрын
Line 6 have been great in their software support but in 2024 it’s the hardware which is starting to show its age. The small screen, lack of wireless mobile editing, inability to stream music via Bluetooth. It’s probably a niche feature but the XLR input for vocal performance/recording is a great addition. Line6 can provide as many software updates as they want but right here, right now it’s the Ampero Stage I’d buy. Nevertheless if Line6 brought out a Helix with these features I’d snap it up with no hesitation.

Consider the starting point though.... Hx may have a few more amps and cabs and odd reverbs. But the stage already has pretty much everything you need. And it does so much more than the hx
@scottbecker34855 ай бұрын
Another stellar production by Leo! This is very telling. I watched as someone who shied away from buying the XL, and instead bought the Stage, preferring its screen, switch layout and dual inputs, among other things. One important point about the Stage was missed: The 2nd input of the Stage is not only XLR and for a mic, but actually a combo jack that can take a 2nd guitar (or other instrument) signal. And in the global settings (unfortunately NOT the patch/preset settings), one can - or rather should - choose for each individual input what it is, as in „electric guitar“ or „acoustic guitar“ (or mic). Listening back to back, there is a subtle difference in tone depending on which setting you choose. I wish Ampero would let us choose the type of input signal on a patch-by-patch basis, making it possible to route 2 different guitars (acoustic and electric) via a single input, using a simple AB/Y switch. That would free up the 2nd input for vocal use. Since that is not possible, I gave up my idea of using this for vocals, and instead use run my vocals through my Boss VE-500, with the added advantage of vocal harmonies (something missing in the Stage). I use input 1 on the Stage for acoustic and input 2 for electric guitar. This is fine, and I have created various presets for each instrument. I only wish the Stage had EQ blocks with 10 or more bands, which would be better for acoustic. Instead, I am using an MXR 10-band EQ ahead of the Stage (between guitar and input). Another thing to mention is the effect loop. I wish it had two, but the one loop is great for adding a Digitech The Drop pedal, for dropping my electric guitar down half a step or more, letting me cover a few songs that would otherwise be too high for my vocal range (without needing to change the signature riffs, e.g. in „More than a Feeling“ by Boston or „Superstition“ by Stevie Wonder). In the same external loop, I have also included a Dig Deep Mk 2 pedal to create a pseudo bass line on the lowest 3 strings (but not the higher ones). Using a split (Y) cable, the guitar‘s dry signal gets passed back into the Ampero, sometimes in dropped tuning, and the bass line gets fed to a 3rd channel on my Everse 8 speaker. Very important to have the effect loop! For the icing on the cake, I have mounted my Stage on a Harley Benton Spaceship 60XL pedalboard and grouped my other effects and switches around it, including a Cloudburst and a Golden Reverberator placed after the output Ampero II Stage. That gives me excellent string/reverb/ambient options that are not only better than those on the Stage, but also free up effect blocks that I might one day wish to use for a dual instrument/vocal chain (which is unfortunately limited to approx. 6 effect blocks each, for a total of 12 in the unit). I hope some of this will prove helpful to other users or potential buyers out there.

As for the amp sound, clearly ampero is better. Like Leo said, only a few tweaks are needed. The HX can produce a good sound, but its basic sound is more in the midrange, so I don't think it's the right equipment for the purpose of bringing the amp closer to the real thing. Well, to sum up, even though we may not like the sound, considering that they are in a similar price range, I would pick up ampero without hesitation, as it is clearly superior in terms of visibility, ease of use, and the number of things it can do.

Thanks for doing this comparison, as I was looking forward to it very much. Your analysis was very accurate, in my opinion. In general, I thought both Modelers sounded a bit darker/less trebles than the real Amp. Tone-wise, the Ampero sounded a little richer/more harmonically complex than the Line 6. The UI of the Ampero, its design, and it's more modern features are very attractive. The Line 6 holds up pretty well, despite its age.

I can compare to Pod Go, so tones will be similar to Stomp. Out of the box, Ampero sounds better, the built-in presets sound more natural to me. It's super easy to tune with the touchscreen. Just the dual inputs are worth a lot to me as I can run piezo and magnetic simultanously. The biggest disadvantage are pitch effects. Pod Go wasn't great but it sounded ten times better. I find your english easier to understand compared to native english speakers for me being non-native speaker (OK, more of a writer and listener), it's so cool, and your english is so fluent. What's the accent btw? I also own Ampero Stage. Everyone in the internet already said that it has solid emulation, so my 5 cents of what I like is it having bleeding edge tec, like USB-C, TRS MIDI, touchscreen, wi-fi. And of course nice white color. The video is great, as it compares the same aspects of each device side-to-side in precise "laboratory" way. Almost an scientific article. Also worth to note that I bought Ampero Stage directly from China for about 592$.

Hello Leo, I sold my Stomp XL and at the same price I bought the stage 2. The pitch shifter is not worse than the Stomp (surprise). I find its menu silly, compared to the HX. IN Stomp mode, I cant see the name of the patch I m in. The drum sounds bad and not the easiest to operate on stage, even to setup the bpm is cumbersome but I will try with the bluetooth+android. Looper is still cumbersome for live usage - even this pedal should serve one man band scenarios. I wrote a letter to Hotone tp cossider adding a block looper, a simple 1 button looper, I don not mind if it is only 1 min rec time. But it would be much better than the recent switching-a-lot situation. It is not practical live.

You forgot to talk about the capacitive buttons on the hx 😊. I'm biased because I've been an hx user for a couple of years now so it would really need to do something special to beat it for me. The smaller non touch screen strikes me as potentially being more reliable and road ready for instance, and just looking at them, the build of the hx seems more sturdy. If the ampero had gapless patch switching that would put it over the edge for me I think.

I very much agree with your findings, but want to add one criteria that has not been touched, and in the end was the deciding factor for me (figuring out which unit to pair with a Tonex)... While there is a lot to like about the Stage, the sheer fact that it can't control other devices via Midi was the deal-breaker. The Stomp XL can easily control the Tonex, my Meris LVX and Mercury X on patch change, on snapshot change and by assigning PC/CC commands to foot-switches - the Ampero can't do any of that and would require me to put a separate Midi-controller on the board, more than voiding any space and money savings.
@LeoGibsonGtr2 ай бұрын
Hi, thank you for sharing! This is an interesting point. May I ask you why with the Ampero you can not control external devices? Thank you!
@uwedasler4252 ай бұрын
@@LeoGibsonGtr Well, the functionality does not exist in the software (yet?)... If you look in the manual or the software itself: there are no Midi commands under the Footswitch or Patch settings. Your comparison videos are all excelelnt, and this is no exception. However, I think you missed a few key differences in the two units. I used to own the Ampero II Stomp, which is pretty simialr to the Stage. On the A2S, the pitch fx are mostly unusable. They exhibit terrible artifacts, track poorly, and have too much latency. Also, the MIDI implementation is very weak compared to the Line6 MIDI implementation. This means that parameter control is very limited at best, and this can be a big drawback for live use. This got a little better with the Stage since they've implemented scenes (not yet on the A2S), but it is still not as flexible as the full MIDI capabilities in the HX Stomp. And finally, and maybe most importantly, Hotone has a very bad track record when it comes to updates. They are VERY infrequent, and often insignificant. They promised 4 updates per year, but did not deliver last year. Some examples: the A2S still doesn't have scenes over a year after they were promised to be coming soon, the bug that causes the editor to go crazy if you turn a knob on the pedal still hasn't been addressed, nor has the gap when turning certain fx on/off within the same preset. Line6 support of the HX Stomp is miles ahead of Hotone. If these things don't matter to a particular buyer, then the Stage might be attractive, although, I think even then, it is overpriced. But frankly, after the experience I had with the A2S not being updated for long periods of time (not even for critical bug fixes), I would never spend this amount of money on a Hotone product again. I bought the A2S thinking that the 12 blocks would be helpful and I would relegate the HX Stomp to be my backup. But I couldn't do that largely because of the lack of live parameter control and such poor MIDI support, and in the end I sold it. I did buy an Ampero Mini and it is now my backup for thr HX Stomp. And at that price, if they never update the firmware (I do hope they will), I can live with it.

Of course I click on this to hear you play, which was insanely awesome !!!!! I love anything you come up with, it's great !!! Thanks !!! But I was just looking into the Ampero and the studio one specifically because I play bass and sing in a touring band. Thanks again for the video, very helpful ! 👍😁👍

Thank you so much , I'm really happy that you appreciate the channel! Yes, I think that both the units can be used with a bass.

The biggest advantage with Helix is in my opinion Helix Native VST. Makes recording so effortless compared to what competitors offers.

Hi, thank you for your suggestion! It is not always easy to find this info in the user manual of the products.

I would choose none of these units. I only record and I am waiting to the Boss IR-2, simple to use, good sound and good price. I'll put the effects in my computer, so I can tweak more precisely in the mix. Thank you for your tests

I can recommend Helix Native if you are recording. A Helix in VST format with no DSP limits, there is no competition to this in my opinion.

@@bitdeviceThank you but I need sometime to keep some CPU with an external device. I can use 2 VST "inside" : S-Gear and Fuchs Overdrive Supreme 50 wich provide the kind of sounds I love. I quit Line6 for a long time, due to my pitiful experiences with their units. ;)

I own an HX Stomp XL...and an Opus. In between the two I have a Strymon V2 El Capistan. I like the sound a lot. I am doing only power tubes and cab sim on the OPus...and spring reverb and analog delay on the El Capistan. I figure this lightens the load on the HX Stomp and allows me to run only preamp sim on the HX. My question is..."Is this faster splitting it up like this or would it be faster to put all through the HX unit?"...."How much faster or slower?"
@LeoGibsonGtr5 ай бұрын
HI, thank you for sharing! I'm sorry but I didn't understand the question: could you please clarify what you mean with "splitting it up", or with "is it faster"?
