Stunning comparison as usual. In the whole web no one produce such content: the pro/cons chart is really on the spot, while the tone switching during the song gives a realistic idea of tonal differences between different devices. No mention is needed for the playing which is stunning. Well done!

Great comparison, kudos! One thing that is missing IMO is the ecosystem aspect - specifically, the fact that you're getting Helix Native software (basically a Helix in VST plugin format) when buying Helix, for an additional 99$ is a really huge advantage. Helix Native doesn't require you to even connect the Helix hardware to your computer and it makes re-amping process so much easier, which is extremely essential for recording musicians: record once, and simply change the amp/effects settings afterwards without the need to record again. Sure this can be done by recording a dry signal and going through the hardware and outputting into a different track, but IMO, this approach is cumbersome and has it's own limitations (e.g. the DAW session is not synced to your hardware, so you don't have a way to recall the session specific settings right into the hardware obviously, which means that if you want the exact settings, you need to save them in your hardware and recall when you open a session).

@plasticmac143910 ай бұрын
@@phowell333If you haven't already got this sorted, check your input level. A lot of people gain stage their DI guitar signal like a regular mic signal and overdrive the plugin. On your interface turn your gain to zero and use the instrument input, or if you use your helix as your interface use input 5/6? to record the unaffected DI signal, this how I record and my presets sound identical.

By far the most useful and neutral comparison on KZbin so far. I wish we had a way to know and compare the actual DSP specs similarly to when we compare PCs or mobile phones. As a Helix user, I won't be switching to QC, but I am looking forward to see how the QC develops in the coming years, and what Line 6 will release to compete with it. Hopefully there will be some even more amazing units when the time comes to upgrade. Thanks for a great video Leo

I have Variax JTV-69S (with pickup and neck upgrades), and Powercab 212. This integration with Helix is really great for live gigs, less important for studio recording. To me, the WiFi and web apps in Quad Cortex are convenient but aren't that important. You have to connect with a USB cable to use the audio interface anyway. I also use the S/PDIF output in Helix to get input into my computer through my Focusrite interface without having to go through another analog to digital conversion. But profiling and hardware design are great features in Quad Cortex so I have one on order and intend to use them together.

Just got the Quad Cortex a few weeks ago and I love it so much so that I sold the FM3. This thing is just so easy to use and dial in. The amount of amps and pedals this thing can capture is unlimited. The screen is easy to see from a standing position and the rotary foot switches make it a breeze to adjust parameters. Glad I got on the preorder over a year ago. Was worth the wait.

Another excellent video and comparison - you are the best! Like so many of your viewers and Subscribers, I can't help but compliment you on the quality, thoroughness, and unbiased videos you make. The real Amp and the 2 Modelers are wonderful pieces of gear, and I think anyone who has them must feel very fortunate indeed. Both Modelers got very close to the real Amp's tone. So close, that the differences didn't matter to me. I was very interested and happy to see the EQ graphs of the 3 units, as they helped me see if I could hear the differences displayed in the graphs. Again, they were very close. and any differences could probably be easily compensated with a multiband EQ. I agree with your analysis of the quality and usefulness of the Modelers compared to the real Amp. Personal use and needs makes a good guide. But, the newer technology is an important factor to consider, and I would probably purchase the Neural based on that and its size and weight. Right now, I'm happy with my HX Stomp and the incredible sounds I'm getting from it with the Firmware 3.10 Update. And at 1/3rd the price of those 2 Modelers, I'm pretty satisfied. Thanks

In my opinion the pro is that you can use it as an audio interface, to which you can non only attach your electric guitar, but you also have 2 XLR input that can drive condenser mics, so that you can record an acustic guitar or the voice. Basically you don't need any other audio interface.

GREAT Video.....As of 01/22 - here's a few things about the QC. The quad cortex has no looper. When changing presets the reverb and delay trails don't spill over. The QC has issues with some expression pedals - there's a delay in them. As soon as you move beyond just the tone..... you'll realize the QC is half-baked. I have a QC so I know. There aren't consistent and frequent updates to the QC either. Fractal (Axe Fx), updates their product about every 12 weeks. ..... while the size of the QC is nice, and the tones are very good, that's where it stops. IMHO - don't waste your money on the QC.

As an effects geek, The Helix has plusses here. However, it is personal opinion, as you suggest. I would choose Cortex despite the effects due to profiling, size, ease of use, and future firmware upgrades which will expand the quality and number of effects. Besides, Helix effects are competing with Boss and Quad Cortex should be an exciting middle ground in that battle going forward. That Donner guitar is pretty impressive, but your songwriting and playing are the keys to the excellence here.

In my Honest and very Humble Opinion.......After coming to terms with the very real fact, that no matter how good profiling gets to real amp experiences, you will probably never get 1:1 similarity. Because there are many factors that adds to an amp's tonal character, right done to ambient temperature, voltage (both of these can be controlled to a fair degree) the room an amp / cab is being played in, the age and run in time of the electronics and the hand wiring in the amp, to name a few. But yes software can take it to a level where these slight differences can be negligible to even a veteran ear. IN this video, there were huge differences between the Soldano and the Cortex and the Helix. To my ears the Helix sound slightly closer to the real amp although the Cortex sounded slightly richer than the Helix (a slight eq'ing can fix that). And in the graph at the end, the Helix curve was more closer to the Soldano's curve, except for that small spike in the higher frequencies (which i think is intentional to compensate and bring parity to the tone being captured) . SO even if the Quad cortex has better profiling capability, it really doesnt matter, because you will never really get the exact same sound as the original, and if this is the case, then the next best thing is to get the maximum out of it to create really good tones which both units are capable of. They may not sound similar, but both will sound great . With this reasoning in mind, and with the thought that whatever money you spend, you should get maximum benefit and maximum bang for the buck. In this aspect, i think the Helix is a far better choice. I think the (very apple'ish) marketing tactics used for the Quad Cortex like the cool sounding technical terms like 'QUAD CORE. / .NEURAL DSP' etc is adding to the drool worthiness of it. It does look very cool and sci fi 'ish though and does sound scary good .
@IsaacLausell3 жыл бұрын
Hi Leo, excellent review! They are both awesome but I liked the sound of the Quad Cortex better. It seems to have that a bassier inclination and a somewhat more scooped quality in the mids however it seems like all of that can be managed. When the tendencies are towards a more fizzy high end it is harder to smooth out without sacrificing certain tonal properties. Another issue that Line 6 and even Boss don't get is that working musicians want more functionality in a smaller package. They have their line ofsmaller products that seemed aimed at providing an entry level point to entice the customer to buy the larger units. I personally do not want to carry around big modelers, amps or anything else that is big and heavy and don't care about how many bells and whistles they add. If you are on tour or doing fly gigs it is simply not practical to haul around these huge pedalboards.
@LeoGibsonGtr3 жыл бұрын
Hi Isaac, I totally agree with you! Portability is a huge pro of the QC....and it can also serve as a complete hub for recording with just a computer...this is very convenient when you are on the go....I think that also Boss and Line are gonna follow this route with the new generation of pedalboards that they will want to do... Thank you for your message and for sharing your opinions and experiences and I'm super happy you like the video!

If you get QC need a lot of patience on everything... as well on QC: No auto-wah, no intellipitch, no looper, no synth, no swell....maybe they have newest DSP chip, but what's the point to get a Ferrari Engine if you drive in a parking lot?
@LeoGibsonGtr3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Giordano, this is a great compliment! Yes, so far the QC is limited as regards effects, but it is still at its first releases of the firmware and the Helix has done a lot of iterations adding new features , effects amp along the way. So here we hope that QC will follow the same path, providing with new firmware, new effects, the looper, the computer app...so using all the power that the machine can offer. Thank you for your message!

In other comparisons on your channel I have been surprised that I liked the Helix the best and I think again it was impressive here. Personally I liked the way it sounded in the mix more in this video than the Quad Cortex but of course that could just be the way they were dialled in. The Quad Cortex has also impressed me so much in every demo I have seen of it but in this video unlike some others I have seen pf yours, I thought the real amp stood out above the others this time although they were all good enough that I'd no doubt be happy with any, all would be better. If it was a choice of either Helix or Quad Cortex it's too hard. Both sound great, the profiling is a killer feature but the Helix effects and expression pedal are also desirable.

The thing for me now is. Line 6 has shown steady consistency of updates and support. Where as the Quad Cortex has disappointed many and have delayed a lot of what they promised when they announced it.. For me now I love the size of the QC, but I'm just not sure they are 100% focused on the product yet.. Where as Line 6 is many years older and rolling out frequent updates which is keeping it very competitive with the rest.

Hey Leo, great video and great playing! It blows me away how you can make that Donner sound awesome! I want to give you a small English tip, definitely not as a criticism but to help expand your knowledge as you have already expanded mine. In general one would use the word "since" only when referring to a specific point in time. Ex: since 1991 or since 2 o'clock. But without a specific date/time one would say "for many years" and "for many months". "Since many years" sounds really odd to a native speaker.

Haven't had the chance to listen to the comparison through proper speakers/headphones yet, but the tonal differences seem very small and can easily be negated with EQing. For me personally the QC wins for three reasons: 1. it has the same/more power in a smaller and lighter package 2. has an almost infinite selection of amps through the Neural Captures 3. it allows me to capture my favourite OD pedals which is one less thing to carry around The first point is almost the most important to me, because I have a 2hr commute with public transportation to my bands practice space and lugging around the Helix Floor + a laptop in the Helix Backpack(easily adds up to 10-12kg) and a guitar with case/gigbag really is tiresome, especially for some one who is already struggling with two herniated discs in the lower back. Sadly my QC wont arrive before October :(

Nice review. Just one clarification, Helix input sample rate (and USB) is fixed at 96KHz (as for the manual). The selector in the menu is just for AES output. Which one would I've bought? Herlix, just because I would need an all-in device, QC misses the expression pedal, so yet another device to buy/bring + patch cable etc... this is exactly what I'm trying to get rid about, moreover is not heavy at all (even if QC is much lighter) and QC is missing the text strip which I find SUPER useful cheers
@LeoGibsonGtr3 жыл бұрын
Hi Fabio, thank you for sharing your final choice and the reasons why!
@alexwong73 жыл бұрын
I think the high frequency spike is why the Helix always sounds a little fizzy to me. High cutting fixes that but with an FM3 or QC, maybe you dont need it for that reason. I'm waiting for my QC to arrive, but I've built a board for it with a plan to run an HX stomp in the loop of the QC and control it via midi. Best of both worlds? I hope so. Even with the expression pedal, it will be smaller and lighter than the Helix on it's own.
@LeoGibsonGtr3 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, thank you for sharing your opinion and your approach is pretty good....I have to do a video about it...😊 Thank you!
@alexwong73 жыл бұрын
@@LeoGibsonGtr That would be great!! I'll look forward to that one if you do it. The Stomp can do things like auto wah on and off which will make it great before the QC amp block, and seems to have much better options for reverb, modulation etc etc that will be better after the amp block. I dont want to put the QC in the stomps loop so for each patch, I can only choose stomp before of after QC amp block, but not both - but I think it'll still add a whole load of effects where the QC is lacking - and maybe some of the Stomps amps will still beat the QC too?

Thanks for another great review Leo! 😊 As a beginner electric guitar player, that has however been playing acoustics before, I find it hard to know which unit would be easy to start with to get good sound. I've been thinking about the Helix but also heard that it can require a lot of time to learn how to configure good sound. Is that true? As I've not been using valve amps before I've no frame of reference what sounds good! 😂 I've also an Fender Mustang III that I would like to use as an output speaker. Can each modern unit today sound good with a cabinet speaker instead of monitors? 🤔
@LeoGibsonGtr3 жыл бұрын
Hi, well, I think that the Line 6 products are the ones with pretty good user interfaces, and once you learn the basics, you can obtain pretty good tones. Yes, you can use your amp, and you have few possibilities...for instance the 4 cable method with which you can use effects before the amp and others after the amp (using the effect loop of the amp), or you can go in the input of the amp, removing the amp simulation, or you can use just the power amp section of your amp, removing basically the cab sim from the pedalboards. So you have plenty of options. Thank you!
@Benke013 жыл бұрын
@@LeoGibsonGtr Thanks for the reply! 🙂 Good to know if doesn't require too much effort and time to get a good use of the Line 6, I'll have it under consideration then. 👍 Yes, my amp has an effect loop so that is probably the right choice. I was little more concerned if the resulting sound would be good independent of pedal board or if its only certain models that have the possibility for this setup to sound well.

Hi Leo I really like your reviews - and your playing is awesome! But: when I first stumbled upon your channel I was searching for latency-times on different modellers. Perhaps you could include that when you make your comparisons? Both in “idle” and in a stressed out max of a unit. The bit/sample rate doesn’t say much about latency. At least a new latency test for the new kids in the pack would be appreciated. Cheers

I’ve had the Helix since it was first released. I recently picked up the Fractal FM3 and am selling the Helix, there is no comparison with the sound and I love the smaller form factor. I’ve had the Quad Cortex on order for months and should receive it in the next week or two. The size, more foot switches and capture capability should make this my new favorite. The QC has to be really good for me to take the FM3 off my pedalboard though! Another great review, thank you for your time and effort!

i love your content, very cool analysis every time but having followed a lot of your vids there is something i miss for the "final notation" regarding every comparison you made with quad cortex. first comparison was QC vs FM3 where score was kinda identical 7+/6- for each units you just made this video where you compare QC to Helix with respective scores of 7+/6- (QC) and 9+/4-(helix) and last comparison id'like to point out is the FM3 vs helix to achive the circle where scores where 9+/5-(FM3) and 8+/6- (Helix) thus, if notations are quite équivalent between QF and FM3 how does FM3 can have better notes when compared to helix than QC when compared to helix. it's just a simple question ofc :) just curious of what is the factor that makes this difference. And do you plan to make a video comparing 3 units with final notation ?
@LeoGibsonGtr3 жыл бұрын
Hi, well the FM3 vs Helix was actually FM3 vs Helix LT as they are in the same price range, where here I'm comparing the QC to the Helix Floor, as once more they are in the same price range, so in my opinion you can not make the equation you are doing here. As regards the comparison of the three, maybe I will do it in the future, after some firmware updates so that it's gonna be even more interesting... Thank you, interesting topics...
