leokimvideo the stick spiders are ogre faced spiders and they make a web in their front legs like a net and swipe down and grab prey from their web but they aren't a match for the redback maybe a jumping spider like a portia jumping spider whos a specialized cannibal assassin (i domt know if u get those Australia)could bring a twist as it's strategist against psycho
@COctagons7 жыл бұрын
If you want to stop them escaping, use liquid soap or washing-up liquid to make a border around the top of the tank (and maybe make a ring around the surface you put the tank on) when you take the lid off. They will get stuck in it and drown. This is 100% effective; I use soap to kill spiders wherever I can't use poison, like in the kitchen or near pets, and no matter the size, it always works. Even so much as touching the soap will gum up the legs and stop them escaping, so at very least, you can keep them contained.

The fluid coming from the orb weavers mouth is a lubricant/oil, every species of spider uses this method when they become tangled or trapped in another species web, they try to pull their own legs back into the oil hoping to lubricate themselves and escape, it very rarely works as the other species has usually done their damage by then

Leo, I think the spider lings are able to walk onto the Vaseline with ease is due to their size, there is less weight to them making the greasy gel unaffected where when they grow and get bigger gravity starts to play a bigger role. At least that's what I think.

I'm a little late to this conversation, but the stick spiders are actually a species of Ogre spider. Daddy long legs don't have that much body structure, they literally look like a pea tied to a few strings and they definitely don't grow to those sizes. The front legs also give it away because Ogre spiders spin nets out of web to literally throw onto their prey and since their legs are long that makes that whole process easier. Daddy long legs may have long legs, but not as long as that of an Ogre spider. The abdomen is also pretty lengthy, so that's another giveaway feature.

I have even learnt a lot more than i knew about them, and enjoy watching the feedings. you are right tho, they do touch and taste, to assess what is near and how big of a threat they are to them and their spiderlings. they also kinda what you say, spit on their feelers too so they themselves wont get caught in their own sticky webbing they produce when theyre catching food. so far though, awesome videos, and im going to continue watching these til then end. thank you so much for all the extra knowledge, and awesome video footage that is rarely ever caught in action..

Great videos mate. I find it interesting to watch how these spiders behave and how dominant the redback is. I've been waiting to see something that can even the odds, but they seem almost unstoppable. I've heard that the black house spider and daddy long legs both prey on redbacks which if add a few at a time could help to bring down the spiderlings. Those redbacks have a pretty good hold over the entire tank though, so perhaps nothing stands a chance against these deadly spiders once they've settled in. Looking forward to more :)

I want to start off by saying that I really enjoy this series. It is fascinating, entertaining, sometimes awesome (flamethrower), funny ("Do not ever attempt to keep these deadly spiders as pets... I'd like to show you my deadly pet spiders!"), and there is something cool about watching somebody learn about something through observation. I greatly encourage you to keep it going, possibly restarting with the knowledge you obtain about containing them, or even studying different spiders altogether. If the area around your home seems to have a red-back infestation, I would highly recommend putting together a similar container together with daddy long-legs inside, to get them to breed so that there are many of them, as there tend to not be very many red-backs where there are a lot of "daddy long-legs"... but you have to have the right kind. There are many types of "daddy long-leg" Species. There are "Opiliones", or "Harvestmen"; "Pholcidae", or "cellar spiders"; and then "crane flies". Harvestmen are oftentimes mistaken for spiders; but they are, in fact, not. If you put any species of Harvestmen into a spider tank, they will most likely die. Now, the family known as "cellar spiders" ARE actual spiders, many of which would be quite capable of killing other spiders like red-backs. They are the ones you want. Don't even think about crane flies. XD The "Giant daddy long-leg" or "Pholcus phalangioides" is a cellar spider that is known to prey upon red-back spiders. It's light weight and extra long legs help it to confuse the red-back when it is on it's web, and also helps it to keep it's distance. They are also known as "long-bodied cellar spiders" or "skull spiders", because apparently they slightly resemble a human skull (I don't quite see it). They need a warm and relatively dry environment, and are considered to be completely harmless to humans. They tend to prey upon spider species that are harmful to humans, which is quite nice. I'm not sure exactly where you would find one in Australia, but good luck! XD
