I want to start off by saying that I really enjoy this series. It is fascinating, entertaining, sometimes awesome (flamethrower), funny ("Do not ever attempt to keep these deadly spiders as pets... I'd like to show you my deadly pet spiders!"), and there is something cool about watching somebody learn about something through observation. I greatly encourage you to keep it going, possibly restarting with the knowledge you obtain about containing them, or even studying different spiders altogether. If the area around your home seems to have a red-back infestation, I would highly recommend putting together a similar container together with daddy long-legs inside, to get them to breed so that there are many of them, as there tend to not be very many red-backs where there are a lot of "daddy long-legs"... but you have to have the right kind. There are many types of "daddy long-leg" Species. There are "Opiliones", or "Harvestmen"; "Pholcidae", or "cellar spiders"; and then "crane flies". Harvestmen are oftentimes mistaken for spiders; but they are, in fact, not. If you put any species of Harvestmen into a spider tank, they will most likely die. Now, the family known as "cellar spiders" ARE actual spiders, many of which would be quite capable of killing other spiders like red-backs. They are the ones you want. Don't even think about crane flies. XD The "Giant daddy long-leg" or "Pholcus phalangioides" is a cellar spider that is known to prey upon red-back spiders. It's light weight and extra long legs help it to confuse the red-back when it is on it's web, and also helps it to keep it's distance. They are also known as "long-bodied cellar spiders" or "skull spiders", because apparently they slightly resemble a human skull (I don't quite see it). They need a warm and relatively dry environment, and are considered to be completely harmless to humans. They tend to prey upon spider species that are harmful to humans, which is quite nice. I'm not sure exactly where you would find one in Australia, but good luck! XD
@metalgearsalad12047 жыл бұрын
The "daddy longlegs" spider looks to be a cellar spider (or at least it looks a lot like them which we have in the states). They DO in fact eat redbacks/widows and other venomous spiders while being harmless themselves. I bet if you put a bunch of daddy longlegs in there eventually they would overtake the tank
@kristiannygren58114 жыл бұрын
well thats spider he caught wasnt a daddy long legs let me explain first daddy long legs arent spiders and they only have one body part that has eyes and legs daddy long legs look close to the harvestmen spiders yet agin not a spider and theres spider facts

@haveagreatday36647 жыл бұрын
Hey Leo! Hope you and the critters are doing well. I just heard something interesting that I wanted to share with you. Activated charcoal added to dirt in terrariums and gardens helps prevent mold and mildew. It's super cheap too. I put it in my planters. Works great. I bet a half and half mixture would be great for your new Spider Tank.
@caseykline23277 жыл бұрын
The "daddy long-leg" spiders are extremely amazing at containing infestations. We have an old wooden shed that for years had been populated by hundreds of black widows and a single one got in there and turned itself into 10 and killed them all.
@MonochromaticPrism7 жыл бұрын
If you want to get rid of the moisture quickly, you can put a fan on a raised surface nearby and point it at the grate on the top of the tank. This will suck away ambient moisture in the tank, causing the water to evaporate to replace the moisture, only for it to be pulled away again. It should dry out the inside reasonably quickly.

Imperator Seal: Their venom is harmless to people. Mythbusters disproved that. They extracted the venom and it didn't even pass the basic lethality test on a hamster. They measured the fang length and they can infact penetrate human skin. Adam himself let one bite him. He described a flash of warmth around the bite that painlessly dissapated.

those "other spiders" in the tank are juvenile Redbacks! take a close look at the spider-lings, they have the same mottles white/brown/yellow colouring as the mystery spiders. i'm in the US and we have the black widow and they look the same when they are young. i kept seeing them and wondered what they were and they always seemed to be on widow webs. so on a hunch i googled juvenile black widow and, voila! so weird how we have essentially the same spider on the other side of the world.
That cellular spider has no chance xD it will be dead in minuets.

I wish more people made terrariums like this with multiple species of creature fighting for survival in their own small ecosystem, it becomes most interesting when two different species are able to successfully survive by breeding fighting and feeding off of the other and hopefully they would also be provided other more docile type creatures in their ecosystem to hunt I think that would be awesome

For those of us in America: That is NOT a Daddy Long Legs. Australia and The U.S. have two different critters we've coincidentally nicknamed DDL. Use a ring of washing-up liquid or liquid hand soap around the edge of the tank. It drowns spiders if they get caught in it, and if they touch it, it gums-up their legs. Soap WILL stop spiderlings escaping. You could put it around the rim of the tank when you open it. You could also put a ring of soap around the desk around the tank to catch and drown the babies.
