I forget which species of crab it is, but when it's time to molt, they gather together in great numbers. They then take turns shedding to protect each other. Those with stronger shells are on top, while those who just shed or are in the process of doing so are on the bottom of the pile. It could very well be protection on the part of the larger crab.

❤ Wow! That interaction between the small crab going to the big crab looking for safety and the big crab protecting the small crab with his claws is really amazing. It teaches so much about the species and that they also have feelings and reactions. The small crab obviously felt threatened and was scared and looking for the big crab for safety was adorable.
@matthewk42453 ай бұрын
I'm not sure it was actually protecting the small Crab. It raised and open its claws when it saw the small Crab approaching, which makes me think it was actually preparing to defend itself. However, it didn't attack the small Crab when it hid under it, which I find odd. Most crabs are highly defensive and would attack another Crab that got too close.

@justinwatson15103 ай бұрын
It doesn't hurt to look at them that way, but it is worth remembering that thoughts and feelings are mediated by hormones, neurotransmitters, and patterns of synaptic connections. The anatomy and physiology of a crustacean's nervous system is so drastically different from our own that we can do ourselves (and them) a disservice by projecting our own desires and motivations onto them. I'm not sure how much effort crabs even invest into their young once hatched, but I doubt it is very much so I would be genuinely shocked by a parent/child relationship like that. I know there are animals with sexual dimorphism that has one sex being significantly larger than the other, so maybe the big crab was protecting its supply of sperm or eggs if it was protecting at all.
@rosestar70783 ай бұрын
Shore crabs hide under rocks when they are scared. The bigger crab probably looked like a rock at first glance, so the little one went to hide under it. The larger one may have not attacked because was keeping an eye on the human (the bigger threat).

many are not taken care of with interest and love, neither do they usually have the benefit of being the sole focus of their caretakers, often resulting in wrong sized equipments and maybe lack of specialized saltwater equipment. many simply bypass a water chiller due to costs. or forgets to check up on the salt ballance in the tank regularly(once per day) saltwater can be hard to keep running in itself, add such a big impressive species as a lobster and most give up pretty fast.

@@MikeR65 There's no magic to human personalities, they're as much a product of evolutionary biology as any other animal's, we just happen to have more complex ones as a result of our more complex brains, and we often delude ourselves into thinking that our personalities are somehow metaphysically different from our instincts. Conscious thought is an instinct, just a more complex one than the subconscious "monkey see, monkey do" responses that we usually associate with the term 'instinct'. Now, where we draw the line of acceptable callousness is subjective, as we too need to consume other life forms in order to survive, whether flora, fauna or fungi; so you're free to tell yourself whatever you need to for the sake of your own peace of mind. But it doesn't change the underlying truth that in the end, it's an artificial division made up by us, which we are placing on what's in reality a sliding scale of complexity. Hope this clears it up.

I've loved following the growth of your lovely lobster ever since. What a joy to watch two totally different Leon's grow over the years. Leon's so huge now! and so are the kitties! Who knew Jet would become a gorgeous long hair? When the little crab hid under the big one, it sure did seem like a parent and child situation.
