He won the 200m freestyle in 1'46''44, using a negative split strategy. Worthy of note, the second in the race finished in 1'46''82 and the minimal time required to qualify for the worls championship set by the french federation is 1'46''79. Meaning that Léon is the only one qualified (baring repechage).

I think the other guy went under the minima during the qualification round
@arsenmarek597 Жыл бұрын
@@oliviermarije Indeed you are correct. Note that in practice the french event is a national championship, and not necessarily a qualifier for the world championship (or Olympics next year). Hence an athlete with high season best time can be qualified despite failing on the national championship. This may vary from sport to sport or even from year to year. This is in contrast to USA trials which are often strict qualifiers. As for minimal time the athletes can make them in any official competitions priors to a given date. and the first heat of a relay would also be valid.

Within spitting distance of a WR and he won’t even swim at WC, because his 200 IM is even better! Laughably good!

Interesting to see if he really swims this event in Paris because he wouldn't have any rest days before 200 IM if he swims 200 breast. Three brutal starts in two days (Tuesday-Wednesday) and then again three starts in two days in IM too (Thursday-Friday). Of course as a Finn I hope he skips 200 breast because then Mattsson has better chance to renew his bronze medal from Tokyo!
@terrificleon Жыл бұрын
lol, Mattson is a very good breaststroker... I have mixed feelings, my family comes from the Baltic, a country south of Finland (my name is very close to Mattsson), but as a Frenchman, I hope to see Léon win gold in the 200 breaststroke... all the more so as he with Bob Bowman have become accustomed to racing at high level without recovery between.
@terrificleon Жыл бұрын
Ok, he's already said he didn't think he'd swim the 200 breaststroke in Japan because of the 200m im final which follows the 1/2 breaststroke, but the sentence in French leaves a little doubt: "je ne pense pas" (i don't think) = "je ne suis pas tout à fait sûr" (i'm not completely sure). In my opinion, he wanted to try something big yesterday, i.e. the world record or see if he was capable of coming close to it. He half succeeded, coming within 64 hundredths of Stubblety-Cook. Hence, in my opinion, the uncertainty that remains for Léon, even if, no doubt, caution will prevail (he's still very young for such a challenge)... I've heard several French fans very excited at the idea of seeing Léon in Fukuoka trying to win a 3rd title (in addition to the two im), myself included. In fact, he said himself three days ago that he wanted to win more than two titles in Japan... I think he's very keen to do so, and yesterday's time should confirm that, but he's not sure of his ability to string together two races at such a high level. We'll have to wait and see what the final decision is...
