I met Russell in the Photography studio of a friend of my father in Hollywood in 1973. I was just a kid and I was playing the drums, just fooling around and Russell played along with on the piano. It is burned into my memory. He was friendly and funky and I only realized later what a unique experience it had been.

Love the Leon story . Yes it’s been said , by many now since that time , sometimes the first take of a new song , is the best , as it was its virgin and heartfelt one . 🫶🙏

Saw Leon perform in Adelaide in 1973. It was a real buzz to see the guy live. He was sort of mystical.

Liked this video a lot. I first heard Leon when I was 16 in 1974. I loved all I could find. Every weekend I went to the swap meet at the Orange drive in theater in Orange County CA.. First thing I always did was track down the vendors selling bootleg albums and look first for a select few bands. Leon was one of the must find artists along with Bowie, Neil Young and New York Dolls. All my friends thought my music choices were lame and refused to entertain them. The funny thing is all those friends of long ago along with about 90+% of kids back then now claim how much they were influenced those artists among others. I couldn't and still don't understand how after listening to Leon they didn't want to hear more. It was nice to see Elton show all how wonderful and special Leon's music is before he passed. RIP Leon and thanx for all the great times you gave.

I agree. Elton John's introduction of Leon Russel to the R+R hall of fame not too long before the latter's death, and the words of Leon Russell and all of it, was beautiful to watch (KZbin). And the film ,recent, of the Mad Dogs and Englishman tour, with their reunion and all of the footage of that musical time and space (The Letter, Feelin' Alright). What a great thing to be able to take part in that latently, through that lovingly made, film, because I was ten years too late for that in person. So Thanks to the folks who made that movie, and i think it's just recent and we saw it, my wife and I, on Netflix, if anyone's interested. But I agree also with @TheGravygun in that I'm pretty far in and have yet to find out about George Harrison, of whom i'm sure Mr. Russell has nothing but good things to say about his friend George. Maybe incisive, but as long as they're true, that's what one hopes for and, to be honest, pretty much always expects.

@@arifq123 tried to find a recent film but can't find any. theres nothing on netflix ether. there is A Poem Is a Naked Person shot in 72-74 of the mad dogs tour but nothing new it took 40 years to e released. he only other film I can find is about leon and elton recording their album. I'll keep looking.

@@1958HHH Yeah, it was made not long before his death, when they all got together again, except forJoe Cocker of course, for a two show reunion. Worth looking for.

@@1958HHH The one with Elton and Leon was great. The original Mad Dogs & Englishmen movie is something I've watched several times over the years and always enjoy it. A new version, I'm not aware of anything.🤷♂

Same here, successful drummer for a band on The Sunset Strip (‘78-83) headlining. I also played 6 & 12 acoustic and 3-4 electric guitars, Fender Strat & es335 for jazz & blues. But that happed to me 3 times. Like James Taylor said that Carolina was after a dear friend had been boxed up in a nuthouse and had killed herself almost immediately and nobody told him because they were recording or going on tour so he didn’t find out until two weeks after she died. He was mad, sad and had just been run through the blender and he grabbed his guitar and the whole thing came pouring out. Intro, verse, chorus, bridge, slow part, ending. All done, zero changes in 15-20 minutes just to write it down. He said something marvelous, “It’s like the song was there and I was just the first to play it.” That exact thing has happened to me three times on guitar and they are, by miles, the best pieces I’ve ever composed usually I write bluesy Stones songs but when ‘Waiting on a Friend’ comes pouring out and I knew all 3 times that they were not derivative of anything. They all stand alone. Keith said, “Always keep a cheap little recorder next to your bed just hum it once then go back to sleep but if you don’t record it when it wakes you up…. It’s gone!! Best example, Kieth just before dawn grabs the recorder and says: “ na-na na na na na-na-na-na” went back to sleep and that is the riff that is the song, ‘Satisfaction’!!

But is there a George Harrison solo on Leon & Mary Russell's "Wedding Album"? Which track? Wikipedia has a lengthy list of album personnel but no Harrison. If he was under contract to a different label, maybe he wasn't mentioned on the sleeve. But that was a long time ago now.

I like how they threw a random photo of Kurt Cobain playing guitar in here while talking about Leon learning songs in church; totally appears like someone just enjoys looking at Cobain so they threw him into a video about a different musician.
