Julie Felix was quite the popular artist in the UK in the mid to late 60s. Born in Santa Barbara, California, she moved to Britain in 1964 and took the country by storm. She was called the "Queen of British Folk" and hosted her own BBC TV series from 1967 to 1970. I believe this clip is from one of those shows. Her career hit a speed bump when she was arrested at Heathrow for drug possession in 1968. She was also briefly romantically involved with Dusty Springfield which ended when Dusty allegedly slapped her, angry that she was quite openly attracting the attentions of other women. Thanks to Agnete and Harri for presenting this. Julie was very talented (she passed in 2020 at 81).

Leonard Cohen released this as a duet with Judy Collins in 1967. The next month he released it on his debut album. He said it was written in The Penn Terminal Hotel on 34th Street in New York. He was arguing with the blonde in his room while writing it. It reminds me of "Suzanne" at points. Julie Felix, great singer, don't know her though. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Agnete. Hi Harri, this song was originally from L.C.'s debut album, 1967 LEONARD COHEN. Also on this album was Suzanne, and The Sisters of Mercy (made famous by Judy Collins), and many other super incredible songs.

Tried to learn the fingerpicking, much more difficult than it looks. Cohen is one of my all time favorits. This song it on his first album along with Suzanne and So long Marianne ❤😊🌺

Wow! I'm suddenly transported back 45 years to my first off-campus house at university, where I was introduced to Leonard Cohen's albums by one of my housemates. I still have those old cassettes but haven't listened to him much in recent years. This song was a particular favourite at that time though, played night after night , and I have SUCH a strong association between this song and that house that I can recall details vividly. [ Incidentally, I received a Christmas card from that very same housemate this morning, we're still in touch - just ....]. My sister also had the single 'I'd rather be a sparrow ....' - that was Julie Felix, I think ...?

This is my favourite song, but I have to hear Cohen singing solo to appreciate it. The reason is that it's one of his Marianne songs and it seems so personal that it feels wrong to me to have anyone else involved. She wasn't his first love but there was a bond between them right to the end of their lives, even after he unforgivably abandoned her and despite his many relationships with many other women. Marianne Ihlen was the woman to whom the famous letter was written and that means to me that there is no room for anyone else here, even Judy Collins who released the first version or Julie Felix who I do admire. If you ever come across the story of her manager trepanning himself then you will realise what a weird world we live in.

This is from her show "Once More with Felix" on the BBC in 1967. A great version of a classic Cohen song. He did a stunning version of The Stranger Song in this same show which ended with a tear running down his cheek. In the same vein he also appeared as a guest with the wonderful Judy Collins on her PBS TV concert performance in America in 1976 where they performed this song and a spine tingling version of "Suzanne" you should check out.

Leonard is, in fact, the father of Julie’s only child . So yes , there was a sincere connection there , but a couple of years after this performance. She really is something , right ? Captivating and unfortunately not well known enough in the US. She sang with so many legends .
