Lyrics:
They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom
For tryin' to change the system from within
I'm coming now, I'm coming to reward them
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
I'm guided by a signal in the heavens
I'm guided by this birthmark on my skin
I'm guided by the beauty of our weapons
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
I'd really like to live beside you, baby
I love your body and your spirit and your clothes
But you see that line there moving through the station?
I told you, I told you, told you, I was one of those
Ah you loved me as a loser, but now you're worried that I just might win
You know the way to stop me, but you don't have the discipline
How many nights I prayed for this, to let my work begin
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
I don't like your fashion business, mister
And I don't like these drugs that keep you thin
I don't like what happened to my sister
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
I'd really like to live beside you, baby
I love your body and your spirit and your clothes
But you see that line there moving through the station?
I told you, I told you, told you, I was one of those
And I thank you for those items that you sent me
The monkey and the plywood violin
I practiced every night, now I'm ready
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
(I am guided)
Ah remember me, I used to live for music (baby)
Remember me, I brought your groceries in (ooh baby yeah)
Well it's Father's Day and everybody's wounded (baby)
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

@@jameshutchins3798 that’s an interesting view. I see it more of the devil speaking to man through his music like he has in so many other songs (we know the music industry is riddled with demonic messages and rituals) telling us you know how to stop me, but you lack the discipline. It really is a mind blowing line

This is a prophecy, but it is not yet known whether it is true. I understand some words, some I did check. "The monkey and the plywood violin." Meaning: the organ grinder on the street is about American donation, charity for show, which God doesn't like.

This was the first song by Mr. Cohen that I heard. It was on a Father's Day several years ago. The line "Well is father's day and everybody's wounded" stuck in my mind, I wished many years were to come until it was relevant to me. 7 months ago my dear father passed away; Leonard Cohen now. It's been a dark year... thankfully the 'crack' through which the light gets in is my 5-month son and my 10-month nephew, called Leonardo. They'll hear about their grandpa and Leonard's music, I'll make sure.

Cohen explained himself in a backstage interview at 1988:"I think it means exactly what it says. It is a terrorist song. I think it's a response to terrorism. There's something about terrorism that I've always admired. The fact that there are no alibis or no compromises. That position is always very attractive. I don't like it when it's manifested on the physical plane - I don't really enjoy the terrorist activities - but Psychic Terrorism. I remember there was a great poem by Irving Layton that I once read, I'll give you a paraphrase of it. It was 'well, you guys blow up an occasional airline and kill a few children here and there', he says. 'But our terrorists, Jesus, Freud, Marx, Einstein. The whole world is still quaking.'"

This was my introduction to Mr. Cohen's work, when I was a teen in the 1980's, listening cross-border to CFNY 102.1 out of Toronto (when the radio station and music actually mattered) as a small-town kid in Western New York. Both were great radio stations i used to love listening to humble and fred in the morning before school and the thursday 30 countdown when all those alternative rock bands were still knew and fresh. Not many people my age know who Leonard Cohen is. I’m in my late 20’s. I grew up with him because my mother is from Montreal and interesting fact my great grandmother was friends with his mother Masha. I am several medically complex spending most of my time in the hospital. I don’t care how many times I listen, Leonard always lifts me up more than any treatment can. When I go, I’ve asked more than anything to be buried in mt. Royal ( where Leonard is). He just has had such a deep impact on my life more than anyone I can think of. I saw him twice performing in concert at 80+. No one will ever come close to him. My heart is always under its own weather… Despite the shining sun, the trees in gold This sad November day has just grown sadder First you took Manhattan, then you took the world Your songs were wrought by love, and pain, and caring, Your spirit’s journey was complex and bold. Your faith with you I was so proud of sharing First you took Manhattan, then you took the world Hashem decides the way our lives are meted. Just eighty-two - these days it’s not that old - You went in peace, your earthly tasks completed First you took Manhattan, then you took the world Of my homage to you I am the proudest. Your deep, dark voice spoke to my troubled soul - Of all those singing now, it spoke the loudest First you took Manhattan, then you took the world Though over men like you death has no power For you will live till all our hearts run cold, My mind is bleeding verse in this dark hour First you took Manhattan, then you took the world May your eternal soul ascend to heaven And sing your solemn songs straight to our Lord. The wealth you earned, the only kind worth having - First you took Manhattan, then you took the world In loving memory of Leonard (Eliezer ben Nathan) Cohen November 11, 2016

Your words, straight from your heart, is undoubtedly the finest tribute to Leonard Cohen o.b.m. I've seen to date. Thank you for expressing so eloquently what is in my heart. I only recently heard his songs and have become a devoted fan. My loss for not having heard him decades ago. His lyrics touch my soul in an indescribably way; he was pure genius of the highest caliber. May he RIP in The World of Truth.

Dear Doris, thank you so much for your kind words! I posted my poem all these months ago craving to reach out to those who shared my sentiments and hoping for a response. Can’t think how or why this happened, but the notification of your reply has been sitting in my Inbox all this time…unseen. I am so sorry! Like you, I only discovered him fairly recently, having grown up in another culture. His songs speak to my soul rather than my brain, and have inspired several of my own poems. My sense of loss was so keen that this poem just demanded to be written. It’s heartwarming to know that my feelings are shared by myriads of people the world over. Best wishes, Ita-Rochel

Rest in peace Leonard, your songs were among the first I ever heard and really inspired me to make music. When me and my brother were bron, my dad was still a full-time psychiatric nurse, but he would get back at 9pm and sing your songs to us, they were our lullabies. Now 30 years later, I'm a composer in Japan, trying my best to make music with the impact and grace that yours had. Thank you for your gifts, I hope you're happily making your poignant, romantic songs somewhere. Maybe you can finally duet Hallelujah with Jeff Buckley. Blessed be XX

The music is totally depressing. The humour doesn't negate the depression. Humour is a known emotional defense mechanism and professional comedians often have some great pain in them. Applying humour to his pain may be why he was so functional to produce music which also revealed the pain.
