Lyrics:
Well my friends are gone and my hair is grey
I ache in the places where I used to play
And I'm crazy for love but I'm not coming on
I'm just paying my rent every day
In the Tower of Song
I said to Hank Williams, ''How lonely does it get?''
Hank Williams hasn't answered yet
But I hear him coughing all night long
Oh, a hundred floors above me
In the Tower of Song
I was born like this, I had no choice
I was born with the gift of a golden voice
And twenty-seven angels from the Great Beyond
They tied me to this table right here
In the Tower of Song
So you can stick your little pins in that voodoo doll
I'm very sorry, baby, doesn't look like me at all
I'm standing by the window
Where the light is strong
Ah they don't let a woman kill you
Not in the Tower of Song
Now you can say that I've grown bitter but of this you may be sure
The rich have got their channels in the bedrooms of the poor
And there's a mighty judgement coming, but I may be wrong
You see, you hear these funny voices
In the Tower of Song
I see you standing on the other side
I don't know how the river got so wide
I loved you baby, way back when
And all the bridges are burning that we might have crossed
But I feel so close to everything that we lost
We'll never, we'll never have to lose it again
Now I bid you farewell, I don't know when I'll be back
There moving us tomorrow to that tower down the track
But you'll be hearing from me baby, long after I'm gone
I'll be speaking to you sweetly
From a window
In the Tower of Song
Yeah my friends are gone and my hair is grey
I ache in the places where I used to play
And I'm crazy for love but I'm not coming on
I'm just paying my rent every day
In the Tower of Song

10 years ago I found a Leonard Cohen audio cassette in my dad's walkman which was put away... My life wouldn't be the same if I had not pressed the play button...... One day wish to just sit on the porch of the house where he lived in Montreal... Im from India..

The very first CD I bought as a teenager was a Leonard Cohen one. My father had been playing his music (records and cassettes) to me from a very young age. When hear that music coming from my room, and realised I'd saved up money to buy THAT CD... I dont think I've ever seen him look prouder. Leonard has pretty much been a soundtrack to my life, and defined much of it... I'm not surprised his music changed yours

@@tamarapetrov4990 you are lucky to have your dad around during your growing up days... I was away from my dad for much of my childhood... And got very little.face time with him... But i did learn alot from.him.. the Cohen I found long after he was gone.... But now I play him on the TV and have my 2 year old daughter around... She tries to sing and it's very funny when she says "first we take Manhattan"....

When I was a photographer in Montreal my studio loft was in the building that had his favourite hangout in the basement Nuit Magique. I talked to him on more than a few occasions. I remember him testing lines from a poem he was working on with the people at the table "And there were mensuration stains on my daughter's first communion dress the night I joined the Communist Party"

Holy crap this song is gospel. I'm listening for the first time, and not familiar with Leonard Cohen outside of Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah. Okay, what a song writer my goodness. And in his own voice. 27 angels--I believe. Hallelujah, hallelujah. There is the absence of big marketing and big media here, and the truth rings out in his voice. So so glad I've discovered Leonard Cohen.

And he is still speaking to us sweetly from a window in the tower of song... and thank all holy and unholy he is, because some days his music is all that keeps me alive. Leonard was my teething ring of music (yes, my parents were REALLY strange, some of his lyrics are so inappropriate for children.... though probably no worse than current pop,... but I am so grateful for it!) May the golden voice live on forever!
