Leonardo TH-119 "Koala" Demonstration

This video features the Leonardo (formerly AgustaWestland) TH-119 demonstrator helicopter utilized by AgustaWestland to demonstrate to the United States Navy. In early 2015, AgustaWestland and Bristow Helicopters jointly offered an upgraded variant of the AW119 as a replacement for US Navy’s existing fleet of 117 Bell TH-57 SeaRanger (based on the Bell 206) trainer helicopters under a fee-for-service contract; AgustaWestland and have claimed that over a four-year period the AW119 fleet could be introduced at an equal or lesser cost than the operating costs than continuing to operate the aging TH-57s. Since this video was originally published, Leonardo won the contract and will be building dozens of TH-73As to replace the SeaRangers. The helicopters will be built in their Philadelphia plant, which resides alongside the Northeast Philadelphia Airport.
Leonardo, which produces the AW119 helicopter at its plant in Philadelphia, routinely sends AW119s and AW139s (there is at least one AW609 there) to South Jersey Regional Airport for pilot proficiency training. The helicopter is seen here working the pattern at the South Jersey Regional Airport and is practicing maneuvers that is taught to all helicopter pilots. The TH-119 is by far and away the best of the TH-X helicopter options. When you see it next to the 407 or the 135, it is head and shoulders above the others.

I hope the U.S. is going to choose the 119 for their program. Unluckily Agusta (I should say Leonardo Helicopters division, but I’ll stick with the historical name) lacks the political support that both Bell and Airbus have. I think the Bell 407 is going to win for political reasons (if I were American I would prefer an American company as well), though.

You need to keep a sloosh bucket of suds by the hangar. Every return to base, scrub soot from tailboom--keep it looking nice--take pride in your equipment.
