I’ve been using CLRs with Turbosound subs for years. I use them for studio monitors producing my live show. Then I use the same system at gigs and I get perfect translation from studio to live. Of course my AxeFxII sound glorious through this system but so do the vocals, drums and the mix in general. This system sounds fantastic and is loud enough for 300-400 seat venues. I don’t miss hauling around 7 ft PA stacks and hundreds of pounds of power amp racks!

I'll reiterate - it's nigh on impossible to properly communicate just how loud this thing is in the flesh. Not wearing earplugs was a mistake. Also, my Mesa IR's are here for free - forum.fractalaudio.com/threads/mesa-os-4x12-irs-free.158681/

Rippin' Lips Is your FM3 set to -10 dB or +4? Factory default is -10 for consumer grade gear. Switching to +4 will greatly increase input signal into the CLR. Be sure to re-gain stage the CLR lower so it doesn’t clip. HTH

Take care of your ears Leon. I've been gigging for almost 40 years and now I have a big dip at 4kHz. Following conversations in a noisy environment is very difficult and socially isolating. Paradoxically I have an acute sensitivity so much so that I need ear protection to stack the crockery in the kitchen otherwise it's almost painful. Don't be like me.

Started out with a pair of Yamaha HS8's, which I still have and really enjoy. Of course, they only get so loud, so I bought a pair of Atomic CLR Neo MKII's. Like you said, each monitoring system sounds different and needs a little tweaking. I found the clean tones from my presets designed with the HS8's translated beautifully to the CLR's...absolutely breathtaking, especially with piezo pickups. The dirt tones sounded very good as well, but needed a little tweaking, probably because the CLR's have a flatter response than the HS8's. The CLR's when turned up, will definitely thump you in the chest, which is a feeling I will never outgrow...ha!

I wish the cabinet / covering was more sturdy. It can get dinged very easily. The NEO version is great, very easy to cart around. I'm fine with FRFR but it is still not the "final answer" for my favorite monitoring solution. I use Adam A5's and love them and agree Adam's translate very well for live.

Been looking forward to this! You're spot on about judging audio via KZbin so I definately want to hear your opinion of how they sound and FEEL. CLRs were unavailable for about 18 months in Oz so I ended up going with 2 x Dynacord AXM 12A at AUD$1300 ea vs AUD$1930 ea for CLR. From reviews of people who have had both, they're very close but haven't heard CLRs myself. Ample volume to melt your face off. I have mine setup as WDW with a Matrix1000 and a Mesa Recto 4x12 cab. It sounds HUGE, especially with stereo effects. Awesome tips for dialing them in on the Axe FX. Will be applying this to my presets. Thanks man for your very practical tips.

Leon. Brother. Skull crushing volume made me laugh.. On my phone here it sounds great. I personally trust you if you say something sounds good brother. You are the king of tone to me and have a knowledge of modeling, amps, pedals, etc that is hard to beat. When I first started playing back when the dinasours were humping in the night 😜😂 it was guitar, cable, to distortion pedal at most and maybe a wah and amp. Volume knob was how you changed channels. It was very limiting and you couldn't get so many tones as you can today. Today with a good modeler you can play any style of music and make it sound like the original recording and do so at less than ear bleeding levels, and still get the sustain and harmonics you need, which is much of the feel... Doesn't the same company make a smaller version of the same? Great review sir.

A tip for you guys wanting to get a decent modeling monitor solution, and not break the bank: You can pick up a 90's solid-state stereo chorus amp (Peavey, Fender, Roland, etc.) for a couple hundred bucks. They're around 100-130 watts, plenty loud enough, and even though they're not a perfectly flat FRFR, the speakers in them are much flatter sounding than a regular guitar amp.
@richardputman3506

Leon, if you do try the CLR against other amps or other FRFRs, then you might be interested to also try the L6 PowerCab+. I really like mine. Interestingly, though, I primarily use mine in just FRFR mode. It's got a great guitar cab/amp-in-the-room feel, and can get very loud. I am curious about your unique take. NOTE: You have set the modeler output high enough to 'tickle the red' on the input indicator on the PowerCab for it to sound the best. All the best from TX.

Thanks Leon for another great video....We started to play as a band again, and I just got my AXE FX3 and Atomic 500W wedge....Third time playing live with it....I love it ....but I did notice this last time playing with the band that it started to get over driven it seems....and my peak volume was diminished....like at lower volumes at my home studio....We have a loud drummer, so I had to complete, but felt without using the volume pedal in most cases, I was not heard well, and I was 3/4 full on Master and same on input 1....Question: Would elevating it on a Pole help.say 24 inches off the ground, also, should I be running the volume on the Speaker at full, and adjust the (1) output on the FX3...Please let me know your thoughts.....thanks, and I know with some tweaking I can get this to work as my permanent rig. I also have a Marshal Jubilee 2553 with a 2x12 that I was wondering if that might be better using the effects loop....any help would be appreciated....R

Man, you really have become my go-to dude for all things FM3. I really appreciate these videos. I just got my FM3 (first Fractal product) and am enjoying tremendously. For one of the bands I play in (fusion jazz), we go direct to the board and the sounds seems fantastic. I play in another one (80s metal) where we typically go old-school with amps, so I have a pair of Headrush 108s I'm going to try to make work. On my first test, I had the whole "ice pick" experience, so I think your suggestions are going to be gold. I'll work with it next time my wife is out of the house (we play LOUD). :) Also for the record, I built my presets for the metal band with your Friedmania set as a starting point, so thanks for that one also.

In theory, the unit itself should not care either way. After all, it is just reproducing sound. Where it may have an issue is in how low it can go vs the volume you expect to use. Most 12" speakers in a full-range configuration ( the Atomic CLR is just a PA speaker marketed for guitar FRFR use ) are only capable of reproducing usable output down to 50-60hz at best. This is not exactly all that low when you consider a standard four-string bass's root note is around 40hz. If you use a 5 string bass the low B string is 30hz. So the root note of a bass guitar is lower than the typical 12" speaker in a PA configuration is able to reproduce. It isn't so much that the speaker won't produce 40hz, it just won't be able to reproduce it at the level you want for very long. Bass cabinets are tuned to be more efficient at lower frequencies at the expense of high-frequency linearity and output. A PA speaker ( FRFR if you're into the marketing term used for the example we have here ) is designed to produce as linear a frequency response as it can over a broad range of frequencies. The limitation is its ability to reproduce frequencies much below about 50hz. The speaker has to be tuned in order to make the most advantage of its cabinet volume, be linear, and have high SPL ( Sound Pressure Level, or volume ). Most typical PA speakers are designed to work with subwoofers in order to reproduce the rest of the desired frequency spectrum. There is a phenomenon that occurs when a speaker is placed on the floor such as the case with most monitoring situations. The floor acts as a boundary that as far as the speaker is concerned is infinite. This means that frequencies the speakers reproduce that are not directional will bounce off the floor and couple with the direct sound of the speaker. The speaker has a polar pattern or nominal coverage that it has. Typical speakers are omnidirectional from about 500hz and below. All this means is that frequencies from about 500hz and below are uncontrolled by the speaker in terms of directionality and the floor will bounce those frequencies back up and couple or combine with the direct sound that comes of the speaker's cone and horn. This is why there are different setting the back of the speaker to accommodate the different setup positions it may be used in. It changes the EQ response of the speaker to work best for that use. When on the floor the speaker will have a +6db boost in pretty much all frequencies below about 500hz, so the monitor setting on the speaker is likely reducing low-frequency output in order to even out the frequency response. Reproducing low-frequency output is a hard task for any speaker not designed specifically for that task. This is why even having the coupling effect of the floor will not help too much, although it can be utilized. So the short answer to your question is YES you can most certainly use the Atomic CLR for your bass guitar, but you will have to live with the compromise of not having it be as loud as you may like and not going as low as you may like either. The low E of a standard tuned guitar is around 80hz, perfect for a standard PA speaker to reproduce with great efficiency. Even a guitar with drop C tuning can get away with it because the low-end output will want to be balanced with the high-frequency output it would have, so it balances out quite well since guitars don't need much output below about 80hz anyway to balance well in a mix regardless of tuning. I am not sure how guitarists have not caught on yet that these FRFR marketed speakers are simply PA speakers marketed towards guitarists. Headrush's FRFR speaker is sold by another company ( Alto Trusonic ) as a PA speaker, a cheap one at that, and is identical in every way sans the name and marketing. The Atomic CLR is nothing more than an OEM PA speaker setup stuffed into a cabinet that suits most guitarists. You could go buy a Mackie, Alto, JBL, EV, or QSC speaker and have essentially the same thing. Why is find it disturbing is that most of these FRFR speakers are being sold at a higher dollar amount than most speakers that are far superior to them. The Atomic CLR is selling for basically $1,000 us dollars!!!!! You can buy a JBL SRX 812sp for that much and I can guarantee the JBL would absolutely obliterate the Atomic in every way. The JBL has a 20 band parametric EQ, networking control via an app is you desire, has almost 3 times the wattage, and an extra 6db in output that goes down to 50hz ( the CLR is only rated to 70hz. ). An Electro-Voice in just about any of its model lines will outperform the CLR at around HALF the cost. The Headrush FRFR-112 is sold for $320 while the EXACT same speaker, the Alto TS312 is sold for $250!!!! So yeah, I am not keen on Atomic, and a couple of the other guitar companies practicing what I consider bad business practices. Friedman is another one of them..... Most of these things are $300 or less OEM units in a pretty box with a name on it. Anyway, I hope all is well and take care all.

@@atech9020 do you think a PA active speaker with 15" cone (or two of them in stereo) would be a better solution for a loop station that have to reproduce bass, electric guitar and drum machine?
@atech9020
@atech9020 3 жыл бұрын
@@nagualnazgul3101 15" model speakers do reproduce a little more low-end content, but not so much that it makes it go from no good to perfect. It takes it from no good to better, or just enough perhaps. 15" speakers tend to be good down to around 40hz, which for most people is just enough. The way to look at it is fundamental frequency vs speakers usable frequency range. If your root, fundamental note is 30hz and you MUST have an equal output of that note vs that of your high e, then you need a speaker that has usable output down to 30hz. There is no 12" or 15" model speaker that any normal human can afford that I know of that will do that. If you want sub 40hz performance you MUST have a subwoofer or some other speaker specifically tunned to work in that range. Most 15" subwoofers don't get much below about 35-40hz. All that means is that you will still have to compromise. Getting a 15" powered speaker will give you more bass output compared to a 12", but that bass output is shared among everything it reproduces. This brings us back to headroom which I sort of talked about before in my last post. A speaker can only put out so much before it runs out of headroom and then it will start to clip, distort, and not get any louder. As you can imagine, if you treat output like a $100 bill, everything that you put into that speaker eats a portion of that $100 bill. The less things you try and reproduce the more of that $100 bill you have to spend on any one thing. I.E. if you only play the bass guitar through it, you would be able to make it a little bit louder than if you were trying to play the drums, guitar, and the bass guitar through it. The drums and guitar eat up available headroom, dragging the potential volume for any single one of them down. Adding a second speaker is a double-edged sword. It seems to give more SPL and in fact is does if you are directly between them. Where the speakers can couple they will be +3db louder. The issue is that they can only couple where the listener is equidistant from both speakers. That is a very small number of people if you think about it. Anywhere that you listen from that you are not equidistant from the speakers will have destructive interference known as comb filtering. Using two speakers IS NOT a solution to increasing volume and should only be used as a method to increase coverage or get the sound source closer to the desired audience. I mentioned a speaker's nominal coverage in my last post, that nominal coverage means that certain frequencies have a fairly defined area in which they will be evenly distributed. So it is desirable to have the speakers pointed at the audience and use more speakers to increase the area in which the audience can be in the nominal coverage of the speakers. The compromise for added coverage is comb filtering. I hope this helps answer your question.

Leon, others have said, as did you in this video, tones "translating well over different systems" type of phrase, but I assume you're talking about same output levels right? I mean, physics are physics so a "real" cab will sound different at high vs low volume and the same goes for FRFR cabs, physics still have a major role in regards to sound/tone at different volume levels, and that cannot be ignored unless you're Beethoven. You agree??

E'llo again Leon & Friends. Not sure of anyone else's experience as of late, but I've been on the waiting list... on two different email addresses so I could be sure to be able to get a pair for *Stereo Insanity* ...except I'm going full W/D/W with a 412 Boogie cab in the middle. Anyway....been "on the list" for almost a year?? Do I have to blow the owner or something? Are my papers not in order? Leon, you have no clue how unobtainable these things actually are. I'm convinced they only exist in pictures and videos. There is no real world version you can pick up and put down to work out your front legs. It's a myth...just like Wunterslausch and Jell-O It's all just Photoshop and After Effects folks, it's nothing new. Mighty fine job in post Leo, it absolutely looked like you had a giant wedge shaped box in your crotch. Damn you Adobe, you made it so I can't trust a single thing unless I'm standing right next to it, and even then it only counts if I can smell it too. This is a world of lies and betrayal. Seriously Atomic....EIGHT FUCKING YEARS OF CLRs and *YOU STILL CAN'T EVEN GET EM FOR OVER A YEAR???*. How do you guys keep the freaking lights on? OHH...you don't....I see. You're just pretending again. I member when you pretendered with the Amplifire. Good times guys. Why are you not making these things in your sleep by now, and making the hundreds of thousands of dollars you're losing by making people wait? Broken loop.....I think they call that a roundabout or something

I have to play with someone using a helix along with 2 head rush 12 in monitors. I play bass and the low end coming out of his rig covers up my bass, the mids and highs have no definition and tend to distort everything . I've complained about his tone forever. The whole tone is shit . I would much rather hear a real Marshall with boss effects in front of it any day ! The more you turn the volume the better it sounds. It seem the louder the helix gets the more you want to hit he door.
