I ran a poll on YT to see if there was any interest in FRFR speakers, and it seems at least half didn't know what they were! Since I make so much content around amp modeling, I felt it was only fitting to make a video on an FRFR, so I picked up a Headrush 112 to demo for you guys!

I currently have a question I don’t have an answer to yet: Currently own an Axe Fx 2 XL+. I also recently purchased a custom 2X12 guitar cabinet but with Celestion F12-X200 speakers (they’re FRFR) Running that with a orange pedal baby. sounds great. My question is , since this cabinet I have is *passive* and needs a power amp, could you theoretically use something like a Fryette power stage with vacuum tubes to have a nice coloration to it? Or would it color the sound too much? As always, appreciate the content 🤘🏼

I still maintain that it's good for certain uses -- can work as a jack of all trades when it comes to a rough but decent enough source of high output for IR/cab simulation -- but fair critique of its limitations.

i run two of these together with my yamaha hs50m studio monitors in my practice space. The monitors add a clarity the headrush lack but the headeush adds the punch 5" monitors lack. I recommend running 2 of these in stereo hanging from the ceiling angled down at least 6ft directly left ight from your listening pos with the near field monitors in front separated 2-3ft toed in. This setup creates an absolutely killer sound stage for an Axefx3. No way can a review of a single speaker convey how truly awesome these sound in a stereo rig. If your looking for more of an amp in the room Id look at the offerings from mission, atomic, ect. They are almost 3x the cost tho.

This was a really good review and demo thank you. The uses that you describe are exactly what I had thought of. this is the sort of thing that it's hard to just play and say well decide for yourself it really takes feedback and experience from the person actually using it to explain the pros and cons. It would be interesting if you were able to get another FRFR and compare it to this one and just see what your thoughts are.

Got one of these for using at practice and live with my Kemper Power. I go monitor out to the Headrush and cab out to a cheap 4x12. It helped out with adding more mid and highs. With just the 4x12 It was difficult to hear my leads. For the price it was well worth it and it's ridiculously loud.

I use a 108 and 112 with a Kemper(Was Axe Fx) and with the axe the best tones I ever got was running a sine wave and finding the speakers res freq and set my cab block res to where that fell. You will know when you find it haha. It works to jam along with a drummer and another 412, just have to find the right angle and get it off the floor. Is it a cab in the room kind of thing, no, but its close enough for only guitar nerds to care haha.

Is it loud enough to use in a band rehearsal situation?...yes, as a matter of fact I use a single 1x8 version with a Helix and it is more then loud enough. Playing hard rock and classic metal, with another guitar player and drummer right next to me. At a recent gig, I used two 1x8s out of a Kemper, both upright in pairs like a real cab with the Kemper on top. Again more then loud enough and sounded great with a SLO profile w/Mesa IR. Does it sound as good as my real 2x12 V30 cabinet? Well the power amp being used will add color to your mix, so that depends on what you are using. These speakers certainly cut through the mix and sound great to me. These Headrush FRFRs are an excellent choice for Helix or Kemper. Home use, rehearsals or gigs.
@daniloberserk

About 128dB and more then 130dB peaks. So yea... fucking loud. Just make sure you're tossing an line level input. I use the TS-312, which is actually the same as the Headrush but with an mic preamp if you raise the volume above the line level. I use with the Hotone Ampero and Mikko IRs generally (some stock cabs sounds great though). I like a lot! It's very light to travel, fucking loud and versatile. If you're live on a bigger place you can just snapshot your tone from your modeler on the PA speakers. BUT it sounds like an PA speaker itself. It's not an good FRFR solution if you're looking for that. That's a substancial difference in punch and directionality between these and an Celestion F12-X200 for example. I, personally like the PA solution because it shows more fidelity for what about the public are hearing. I like consistency. The power amp on the Headrush is an Class D 1000w (with 2000w peaks). Essentially zero coloration.

Computer speakers with a subwoofer, bluetooth speaker, poweramp with a speaker cab, 4 cable method into an amp. Was contemplating this speaker for a while and was driving down the street and found a frfr speaker in the trash...i swear to god it sounds amazing for a modeler and you can jam with it or just chill out and practice at low volume but without compromising the tone like a tube amp...for 200 bucks grab the smaller one you cant go wrong...

If you're using a Helix, or AXE FX, don't you want FRFR so it accurately represents the amps it's going to mimic? Unless you turn off amp / cab simulation on the Helix, and just use the Helix for your effects. I like the idea of an FRFR speaker with a Helix setup, so I can tap my foot and go from sounding like U2 to In Flames. I don't think you can do that with a real guitar cab and amp head can you? I think you have to use an A & B switch, since they don't do midi? I dunno, I just started electric guitar recently. I played acoustic for 30 years without electronics.

It's solid state, so the tone doesn't really change dependent on the volume. However, in my experience with SS amps, it's best to turn them up to 80-90% and use the master on your effects processer to control the overall volume. BTW, they are pretty bass heavy

So I would say yes, however it’s not a substitution for a cab IMO. It’s more like a personal monitor, and sounds similar to having a cabinet mic’d up and running through a monitor at a venue. It’s plenty loud to keep up with a full band, but best suited on the floor aimed at one person

Unfortunately man, those weren't meant to be mic'd up. You are getting every freq at once with the headrush. It is basically a stage monitor. Really it's only meant for personal monitoring. My bass player and I both use the headrush 112 and love them. I did have to do some special eq in the helix global eq in order to get the helix to sound the same in my studio monitors as it does in the headrush though. It can be snotty sounding at times. You can hit the mid dip switch on the headrush to fix that though.

Of course they weren't, but how else am I supposed to demo it in a video? 😂 I found the mid dip switch to make the intense low end worse when I used it 🤷‍♂️

I feel ya. I had to mic the room when I demo'd mine. I deleted the video though. I may go a head and do another one soon though. I got around the mid and low end issue by using my global eq, and the lo/hi cuts in helix.

@@TaylorDanley pull your microphones back a few feet they can't be mic'd like a cabinet. These speakers (and most PA speakers) are best recorded from a slight distance. 2 - 3 feet depending on your microphone. This guy nails it kzbin.info/www/bejne/eH2yqaZol8qcpK8&ab_channel=PeteThorn

Probably not going to cut it? I own two FRFR112's and used them for gigs regularly. Not as cool looking as standing in front of my Marshall DSL100H full stack but easier on the back and definitely a great sound and plenty of headroom. Hook both straight into my Headrush pedalboard and gig on dude!

u should have got 2 of the 10's for the Fx3 or fm3. I found the 12" headrush are too flubby and boomy when i took my FM3 to GS to try them out. 2x 10" headrush speakers are prefect for my Fx3 and fm3 and will blow you ears out in a rehearsal. They arn't as good as the Atomics but they're cheap as dirt.

I feel like Headrush has a bit of a spotty reputation when it comes to their products. I've tried a gigboard at a guitar center and wasn't really all that crazy about it, and frfr is definitely not the sort of equipment I could see myself using. If anything, I'd probably just snag one of those harley benton 1x12 cabs and call it a day

Just EQ the low end off at 100-120hz's and the FRFR-108 sound great. I am totally impressed! I experimented with these at a gig yesterday afternoon as monitors, and coupled with the mains next to where I was mixing from so I could make level adjustments on the back. These will get VERY LOUD and they have great clarity. I read the reviews at Sweetwater before I made my decision to buy a pair, and I'm glad I did. I read where a lot of people complained because it would start to rattle if you threw some low end bass at them, but COME ON, be realistic! Its a friggin 8" speaker. You're not going to get 80hz at 100db+ out of these. And I didn't expect to either. I just wanted smaller monitors for small, tight stages. I work with an 11-piece band (Austin Party Band) that I fit into a 16x12 stage, and the bass and guitar stood behind the (2) keyboards (Stage left and right) next to the drum kit, and had difficulty with getting a good monitor mix, so I bought the HeadRush specifically for them. Honestly, I wouldn't hesitate to use HeadRushes across front stage as monitors, but keep the EV for the drummer monitor (to get the low end).

One of the bands I work with (a top wedding band in my area mind you...) um...does not use monitors and does not hire a FOH pro sound engineer lol. SO, unlike other bands, I can't go into the board. Usually, the IRs as D.I. are perfect and engineers love it and most young bands use IEMs. BUT, I'm not buying a cab just for one band. So, I bring my two QSC K10s, put them on stands and point them so that the band and the audience can hear. lol I basically bring an entirely separate P.A. just for guitar but hey, I already owned them as I run my own band and I'm not buying a cab just for one band who cuts mad corners on sound. Long story short: full range sounds great even as the main source for the audience at a gig.

So I gotta say first you’re hearing what would be coming from the pa hence what exactly what it’s for Where you go direct or you mic your normal cab you’re hearing what’s coming through the cab. These are for people who run direct and want to have it sound good through the pa. Frfr speakers and cabs is basically going through the pa sound Instead of playing through your cab and having your cab mic’ed The first distortion kinda sounded like shit both way you put it through and it wasn’t the equipment because the next distortion sounded great so it’s how you set it. The good thing about free cabs is you know exactly what you sound like but you HAVE to set the low cut and high cut so you sit in the mix properly. It makes everything cd quality so you can be great you just gotta set it up way better and you will
I HATED FRFR until I learned this
