Germany learned a lot of lessons from WW2 Make the tank overpowered, so you always have good mobility without always torturing the engine (Kingtiger 700 PS for 69 tons - Leopard 2A4 1500 PS for 55 tons) Reduce the ground pressure, so you don´t get stuck in muddy or sandy terrain so easily (Kingtiger 1kg/cm2 - Leopard 2A4 0,83kg/cm2) Easy to drive - lot of the drivetrain failures in the late war on Tigers and Panthers was simply due to the fact, that the drivers were not well trained and ruined than the machine in the battle

Great video! Leopard 2 Keiler? What a rare sight. I am from Czech republic and our army is now doing trials on Leopards 2A4, as we will have Leopard 2A7s. And one of the things our tankers praising on the Leopard is the gun and the aim and precision of it. They praise it because when compared to our T72s, they hit what they are shooting at at much higher speeds.

There is one key difference between this prototype and the production Leopard 2 vehicles. With regard to the turret and the weapon system, a slightly more developed version of the Leopard 1 A4 was planned originally, as shown here. Due to the experiences of the war in October 1973, the concept of the Leopard 2 was significantly revised with increased attention to protection against anti-tank guided missiles. The hull and the turret were to be protected against the effects of shaped charges by extensive use of spaced armor, hence the vertical armor surfaces instead of sloping armour. In addition, the turret was completely redesigned with the concept of a narrow turret with a narrow mantlet in order to significantly reduce the targeting area in hull down position. This was made possible by eliminating the optical range finder and using a laser range finder instead.

14:20 At night, in German armored units (that were equipped with the Leopard 1s, but weren't equipped with PzB200), it was common for the commander to mount an improvised pivoting bracket for an image intensifier unit (BIV, which should actually be installed on the loaders side instead of a mirror block) on his ring mount for the anti-aircraft machine gun in order to use it for passive observation.

The large circle on the rear right of the turret was the base for a 20mm cannon mount, simular to the MBT 70s. Not carried over past this turret version. The small device between that circle and the commanders hatch is an aim-able grenade launcher that could fire HE and Smoke. Very much like the ones mounted on later WW2 german tanks though those were internal and looked more flush from the outside. I believe the Leo 1 prototypes had a simular requirement though they used a flush mounted model and it too disappeared from production vehicles.

Fun fact, in the Leopard 2A4 you could make manual input for quervind even though the wind sensor wasn’t installed. Also there’s a certain way to turn on switches that made the gunners sight mirror follow the gun tube into the ladestellung so that the gunner has to manually depress to get eyes back on target.

Yup, much more efficient to swap to a fresh power pack than to tow the whole tank to a repair shop. And if the power pack was taken out by enemy anti tank weapons, it just takes a bit longer to replace any damaged piping/tubing in the engine bay, stick welding the hole closed and put a fresh power pack in. (The risk of a second hit to the weld steel patched hole is insignificant)

Tack ska du ha för ett fint genomgång om leopard stridsvagn! Now in English, thank you for a very detailed and informative walk through of the Leopard tank. You explained very well (1) the life of crew inside the leopard tank, (2) the accuracy and capability of the leopard tank, both of which no one else has depicted so visually as you have done. I have a few questions if you will allow, (1) Is there air conditioning inside the tank against çold and heat? (2) Does it only fire these two rounds you mentioned or are there more. Can it fire missiles, rockets etc. (3) what is the maximum distance accuracy of this 120 mm gun? (4) what kind of life expectancy and maintenance does this smooth bore gun require? Thank you.
@zhufortheimpaler4041
@zhufortheimpaler4041 Жыл бұрын
1. yes there is "air conditioning" in the older A4´s and A5´s, but thats basicly ventilation and NBC filtering. In the A6M and newer versions you got a low grade AC but not something comparable to a modern civil car. 2. APFSDS and HEAT-FS-MP are the core ammunition of modern NATO MBT´s, but there are some more specialised rounds availible like Canister (basicly shotgun round for tanks), tube launched ATGM (well, not really that worth using) and recently (around 2017) was the introduction of programmable HEAT-FS wich can airburst, explode on impact, explode after breach, explode without distance probe trigger (turning it into a HESH/HE-Frag) and a few more. 3. Depending on the type of Rheinmetall 120mm smoothbore and ammunition used. the RH120 L/44 (the shorter one) has an effective range of around 3200m with APFSDS, the L/55 (from A6 onwards) has an effective range of about 5000m with APFSDS 4. Depending on the gun and ammunition used. The RH120 L/44 with DM33 APFSDS has a life expectancy of around 600 shots before a barrel replacement is needed, with the more powerful DM53 the life expectancy of the L/44 sinks to around 300 shots. The L/55 mounted on A6 and later models has a life expectancy of again around 600 shots with DM53.

I wonder why there isn't any blowout panels on the ammo compartment in the hull.
@scratchy996
@scratchy996 Жыл бұрын
I guess it's difficult to build blowout panels in that exact spot, without compromising the structural strength of the hull. But the Germans have solved that problem by developing insensitive ammunition, the 120mm DM63, DM73 and newer models. You can shoot straight at it with an RPG and it doesn't ignite. The reason they didn't go for full turret storage was due to the hydraulic fluid being a danger to the crew, if the lines burst. The Israelis experienced that issue in the Merkava, and they switched to full electric turret drive. But that needs space in the rear of the turret. Unfortunately I don't think the Ukrainians will get that ammo, since its classified. The Turks also didn't get the ammo, that's why their tanks exploded. They also stood around on the top of the hill, fully exposed, without cover, with full hull ammo. If you do that, you at least stay in a hull down position.
