Oh that is so true, Canada uses the Leo's as well and they are an awesome piece of kit. We first purchased the leopard 1's in the late '70's, then later the leopard 2's and now we use the new leopard 2A6M's that were also battle proven and used in places like Afghanistan. Canada also learned many of the tactics that you speak about from Germany and to go with it we have the best tanks in the world thanks to Germany. Cheers!

Hey come on! We have a joint tank batallion training together in Germany and we are building the Boxer together. We should improve on that ! Fighting and training together develops strong bonds, which is a good thing to have with our Dutch neighbours. Said by the German/Dutch hybrid!

The best tank at the moment (and the most expensive) is the Leopardo 2E, but the only new generation tanks that proves their combat eficiency was the M1 Abrams and the Merkava IV

the Leopardo 2E is the most advanced tank over the world, and is the spanish version of the Leopard 2A6. The Leopard 2 and the Challenger never fight vs other tanks, not like the Abrams.

siemensohm That's the point. The Leopard "is based" on the Tiger and Panther - even the name (designation). Also from 1943 is the ME-262 - great plane. Germany today (with better access to raw materials and know-how) gets 70 years later (almost to the day) not even a drone out.

@01SnowRider At 2:30 is a Canadian tank - the Dansk dident use the kind of sun umbrellas. Canada has diffent versions of the Leo - some where upgrade some are in the upgrading process at the time of the video. Today all where upgraded, exept the mine protection, because Canada pulls their tanks out. BTW, also no tanks was lost only lightly damaged by IED´s.

I'd like to point out that on paper the Abrams, and the Leo 2 are very evenly matched. They have similar armor, the same horse power, and the same gun. They both spawned from the MBT 70 program which was a joint US/German effort to produce a common main battle tank. The program didn't meet expectations, but the US, and Germany went on to make very similar tanks. They're both superb. I personally like the Leo 2 more though.

@bumschak12 The Danish also used Leo 2 in Afganistan. But they use A5 and the ones in the video were A6 so can only be Canadian. To bad few tanks are used there. They are a lot more precise then air support (less collateral damage), directly available and can give protection to the troops. Onl ythe most heavey IEDs do damage + you can add mine rollers/plow. When you have tracks you don't have to use roads but can go off-road so less chance of hitting IEDs.

The sloped armour of a tank isn't meant to deflect shells anymore. Modern anti-tank rounds are either APFSDS or shaped charges. APFSDS are deformed and destroyed when hitting sloped armour and shaped charges do detonate on sloped armour but due to the angle, the LOS thickness is stronger than that of a normal armour. Plus, these sloped armourplates are also spaced to increase protection against shaped charges.

Less than hour ago, i were walking outside... i did hear powerfull diesel train sound on nearby tracks. In blink of an eye my muscles were jammed for second or so in my mind i saw my self in pothole in the darkness hearing lp2 crawling in the woods! gives my chills still after 6 years when i left army. When will this end? i were panzer jaeger and not afraid of tanks... but i will not forget that simulated war camp. Huh! i can still feel that ground shaking in my bones!!!

@ScansRevelator Iwas in contact for many years with a swedish tenk technican who was trained in Germany. He was part of the swedish tank trails were they put the Leo2 vs M1 and Leclerc ...he was so nice to gave me some officel swedish defence force publications about the test results of the tank trails. There they published numbers like consuption during the whole test trails, reliablity ranking, shooting scoores etc. Leo2 and M1 are perfromance twins with little + and -

@RammsteinXFan thats the Leo2 A4 ... 55to not 62to and no it does not take much to let it jump, during my service time high speed jump was part of the Leo2 driver training, there was a giant oval dirt track for full speed off road driving and there was a ramp about 1meter high that we were ordered to take several times at speed to get a feeling for it

@NationalSniper agree newest version of abrams is best protected one. But L44 still not outdated. it still can take out every currently available tank. L55 has more firepower but its main benifit is the 1+ km extra range. Newest german APFDS rounds have a penetration power that is slightly higher than DU rounds.

@nagmashot a other drawback of the M1 ammounition stowage (that counter the crew protection) if hit in the turret the M1 is with one hit out of ammo. The Leo2 was designed for defense operations vs large tank formations were it would have fight most of the time hull down, and other than at russian T-Series the ammunition is not under the turret it sit right behind the very thick frontal hull armor again you have to look at everything from different point of views

@nagmashot goal of this 3D armor is to bring as much as possible stress to the very thin modern KE rounds. Main goal of this aded armor is to put so much stress into the KE round that it break when it hit the main armor. KE round penetration is to bring as much mass(heavy material like tungsten or DU) with the highest possible energy (speed) on a very small area (thin arrow) breaking a KE round means reducing the mass and deleting all its penetration power

@natsplit - M1 accelerates slightly faster 0-30km/h - armor protection is for both tanks a unknown secret but most likely they are equal only the mine protection on the A6 M is better - the DU amunition used by the US Army reach same firepower than tungsten rounds fired from the L55 - they weight the same depending on model the weight range from 55to 62to at both tanks - both put out the same power, the M1 engine is smaler and needs less armored spce but needs twice the fuel.

@25Milimeter Both are excellent tanks. The L44 is not outdated. Many Leo 2 versions still use it. With DU ammo it has penetration close to L55 (killing T-90 at 4km). The armor has British origin but perfected/modified by the US. The Abrams is the best protected tank. The Leopard 2 has better mobility and with the L55 (somewhat) better firepower and is more economical to operate. If Leo2 A6 would use DU ammo its firepower would be a lot better.

The modified gun performed well. It had the same penetration power with tungsten rounds, as the L/44 has with DU rounds. The US MoD just didn't want to buy a new gun, while the next generation gun was already under development. Plus, they saw no neccessity to replace their DU rounds, although there was proof for their negative long-term effects on the environment and its inhabitants.
