So I'm curious if you may be able to answer this question for me, since you've had multiple leopard geckos and had one lose and regenerate a tail: how far do their vertebrae extend into the tail? Do they lose vertebrae when they drop a tail? Do they regenerate them? Or does the spine end before the point where their tail breaks? If you don't know that's fine, just wondering if you'd have answers since you have far more lizard knowledge than I do! I should probably go research that myself, lol. Great video!
@TatianasTinyZoo3 жыл бұрын
So leopard gecko tails are actually pretty interesting! Their vertebrae do extend all the way down their tail, but instead of being bone all the way through, about 1/3rd of the way down the tail, the vertebrae are actually made of cartilage. They can drop their tails at pretty much any vertebrae point as long as it's made of cartilage and not bone. And because the tail vertebrae aren't bone, they can grow back very fast! That's pretty much the extent of my knowledge though. It's fascinating stuff so I highly recommend reading some of the studies done on their regenerative abilities :D

Hi!! You have no idea how much I love this video because it's the only enclosure similar to the vision I have for my future enclosure. I might've missed you mentioning this but what do you use for heating? Is it possible doing a set up like this with a heat matt?
@TatianasTinyZoo2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Check out the video I did on how I built this enclosure, it includes the lighting and heating that I use. Unfortunately a heat mat won't work in a bioactive setup like this because it will cook your plants roots and your cleanup crew.

What are those creeping plants across the back and the left side? I'm looking to theme out a bit more jungle looking. It's proving difficult to find plants that will tolerate an arid type climate.

I've always heard that the wandering jew or Tradescantia zebrina doesn't do well in leopard gecko enclosures due to needing to be watered more frequently and raising humidity levels. Did yours live? Did it raise humidity levels beyond 65?
@TatianasTinyZoo2 жыл бұрын
My humidity levels were fine with the t. zebrina being watered once a week. However the plant did end up dying when I had to dry the substrate out due to fungus gnats :(

I have a leopard gecko with possible uv burns. I leave the light on when the the sun rises, and turn it off when it sets. My temperatures are perfect. I just recently added the UV light so I was wondering if the bulb I got was too strong or I am leaving it on too long. I used the Exo Terra® Repti Glo Tropical Terrarium Lamp - UVB 100 which is the 13w 5.0/5%. Please respond. I really need some advice.
@TatianasTinyZoo3 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thank you for taking the time to reach out. I can give you some of my personal advice, but I am NOT a veterinarian, so if you are worried about the safety of your gecko I would definitely speak to a professional. Personally, I don't know much about the bulb you are using (I stick to zoo med or arcadia uvb bulbs), but 5% should be good for a crepuscular gecko. If you notice mild uv burns, I would measure the distance from your basking spot to your uv bulb and maybe move the light bulb up a few inches. Lights should be on for 12-14 hours a day depending on the season. Again, if the burns are severe or you are worried about the health of your animal, please contact a professional :)

@@TatianasTinyZoo thank you for your help!
@6strings7353 жыл бұрын
Here is the problem with this whole UVB thing for crepuscular animals - people have gone too far. Yes, in the wild LGs live where sun exposure onto the ground, hence UVB exposure, is very high. However, these geckos are hidden below ground or in crevices where they get warmth but are not exposed to the drying effects of the sun or strong UVB. There are certain times of the year when an LG may actually briefly bask in the sun, such as in Spring when air humidity is not super low, and when the sun intensity is not as high. But those instances are seasonal and in short duration. So, do not have UVB blasting all day. Instead, limit it to maybe 2 hours in the morning and that is it. They just do not need more than that. In the wild they would expose themselves to far less than even that. Alternatively, suspend the UVB light up higher above the cage. Something to weaken it. We need to bring common sense back into the hobby. Some limited UVB, great, or some weak UVB, great. But that is it. Any more is just not applicable to an LG. Look at how soft LG skin is. Not the skin of a true basking lizard at all.
@TatianasTinyZoo3 жыл бұрын
@@6strings735 I do not disagree with you, however if you are using the correct UVB bulbs I don't think it's unreasonable to keep them on all day. These geckos are exposed to tiny amounts of uvb through cryptic basking or reflection of the light even if they are hiding in their burrows in the wild. The sun does not magically stop producing UVB, or weaken it's intensity to accommodate for these animals. The gecko chooses whether or not to bask depending on their needs. This is why it's also very important to give captive geckos plenty of choice when it comes to hides and burrows. I see most of my LGs, even my pale blazing blizzard morph, cryptic basking throughout the day, and never have I noticed any health problems such as UV burns. I agree you have to approach lighting very carefully to ensure safety. This is why my UVB is high above my basking spot, and I use the weakest UVB bulb arcadia has to offer.

What I really need to know is how man cans of foam and how many bottles of silicone
@TatianasTinyZoo2 жыл бұрын
I can't remember off the top of my head how many I used. Depending on how heavy handed you are with the foam (and how big your tank is), you'll probably want between 5-10 cans. As for the silicone, I bought a case and used about 4-5
@TatianasTinyZoo2 жыл бұрын
@UCOFCC_YEvYyeinjntZtE7DA Yeah in that case, I'd get about 5-6 cans of foam and 5 tubes of silicone. I like to get extras or order by the case because I know I'll use them eventually!
