I just adopted a baby Leo on Thursday and I am completely in love! I'm not sure of the gender yet as they are only 2-3 months old, but I've been calling them "Mr. Stubbs" because they are currently regrowing their tail. 😆 I was a fan of your videos even before I got Stubbs, but since then they've been invaluable to us! I currently have Stubbs in a 20 gallon long with reptile carpet substrate, a log hide on the cool side with a log bridge stretching from the top of the log to the entrance of a moss cave, a large piece of Mopani wood that I covered with moss in the center, several large river rocks scattered about for extra climbing surfaces, a water dish, and on the warm side a nice sized step pyramid hide with a realistic fake fern hanging over it. I have a heat mat under the pyramid, and an incandescent day bulb and a tropical UVB for light/heating, and I'm buying a ceramic heat emitter tomorrow for nighttime heat. I also have a dig box, calcium Dish, and poop tray on order from Stroodies on Etsy that should be arriving soon! I've currently been feeding him a rotating diet of small crickets and mealworms, with Calcium (no D3) and multivitamin on the schedule you recommended. I'm planning on adding small dubia roaches and grasshoppers to the rotation too! I'm just obsessed, lol. Thank you so much for loving Geckos and teaching the world how to care for them! ❤️
@nightinggale64703 жыл бұрын
Just some advice: Carpet isn’t a good substrate unfortunately, it harbours bacteria and tends to get caught on their teeth and claws. It’s recommended to quarantine new reptiles on paper towel for the first six weeks to monitor their health. After, good options include zoo med’s reptisoil, a mix that’s 60% top/potting soil and 40% playsand (or a soil/sand/clay mix), Arcadia earth mix arid, or Terra Sahara from the bio dude. A dig box alone doesn’t offer much enrichment. I also recommend upgrading to a 40 gallon or bigger at some point. There’s likely no need for a CHE, a temperature drop down to 60 at night is fine. You don’t need the heat mat either. What brand is the UVB and what type of bulb is it (compact or tube)? Calcium dishes are unnecessary and can potentially do more harm than good.
@leahdresser22903 жыл бұрын
@@nightinggale6470 Thank you the advice! I was actually using paper towels before I got the carpet, I'll switch back to that for a couple of weeks then switch to reptisoil! I actually have a bag of it I bought for the dig box so that's perfect. It's so funny that you mentioned the 40 gal, because I was just browsing for larger tanks online last night! My birthday is in October so my bf is gifting me with one! Would you recommend anything bigger than a 40 gal? I did notice that Stubbs seems more active since getting the CHE, I hope that's not because it's too warm!!! I know I need better bulbs, they are just the typical zoo med bulbs that you find at pet stores. I needed something to start him with but I definitely need better ones. What would you recommend? I was thinking about nixing the heat mat, I went ahead and turned that off! Is the calcium Dish potentially harmful because of over-ingestion of calcium? The one I have is very small, holds about a dime-sized amount.
@nightinggale64703 жыл бұрын
@@leahdresser2290 definitely go bigger than 40 gallons if you can! Bigger is better, as long as you provide plenty of clutter he’ll love the extra space. The bulb I recommend the most is a PAR30 or PAR38 halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat, they’re the most natural and beneficial option. 50W is generally good for leopard geckos, although you might need a higher wattage for a larger tank. Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. Yeah, they can potentially ingest too much calcium with calcium dishes. A tiny dish probably won’t do any harm but also isn’t necessary, dusting on a schedule is enough :)
@leahdresser22903 жыл бұрын
@@nightinggale6470 Thank you so much for all of your advice! I will purchase those bulbs you suggested asap! He has been still pooping daily. Don’t know whether I should be worried or not.

Check out reptile expos and Craigslist. Look for reputable local petstores and breeders. Check morph market, just research the breeder before buying. Avoid BHB, underground reptiles, LLL, backwater reptiles, snakes at sunset, and cb reptiles. Aim for smaller hobbyist breeders rather than large scale breeders.

Do you feed your leopard geckos lights off when u hand feed them?

Where do u put the heating pad on the plastic container u had in the video
@nightinggale64703 жыл бұрын
Heat mats aren’t a good heat source. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. They produce IRA and IRB like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.

as i said i have a baby leperd gecko! it’s acully my first time owning a gecko, and im 12 years old. Im working on making my terrium pretty, and a place where it’s exiting to be in! But I haven’t seen my gecko drink, only 1 time should I be worried? 😬
@nightinggale64703 жыл бұрын
No need to worry! It’s completely normal to rarely see them drink, they usually drink when you’re not looking.

I got a Leopard Gecko TODAY!!! His/her name is Yodah and this video was very helpful. though I should have watched this ahead of time bc his aquarium is a bit sad. with too much open space and no natural look to it and one hide. can anyone recommend be good brands on buying gecko supplies (not food, got to much, like hides and rocks) that are Cheap, not toxic, and have a natural look to them? Please ping me I don't get notifications otherwise
Please do a updated feeding guide!! The last one I seen was 6 years ago !

What is the tank brand and size for your leopard gecko I'm getting one soon and I'm looking for cages

I’m not sure which enclosures she uses. Although aim for a 40 gallon (36x18x18”) or bigger. You could use a glass enclosure (I recommend front opening) such as Exo Terra or another brand, or PVC (which is great but expensive unfortunately). Check secondhand sites for cheap used tanks, that’s how I got mine.
@nightinggale64702 жыл бұрын
@Setsuna Umbreon nope. A 20 gallon long is the bare minimum, 40 gallons is the recommended size. Leopard geckos can be quite active, and benefit from more room for a better temperature gradient and more enrichment. Most bigger reptiles need larger than 40 gallons. Care standards change and improve over time. Many things considered ‘standard’ are becoming outdated.

@Setsuna Umbreon you can often find cheap used tanks being sold on secondhand sites, that’s how I got my 40 gallon.

Hiya! I’ve had a 3 month old leopard gecko for 2 weeks now! He still hasn’t taken to his dhp yet. He’s stay in his moist hide all day then come out in the evening. The longest she’s been under the heater is 20 minutes. Is this normal for him to take so long?
@nightinggale64703 жыл бұрын
DHPs heat them far more effectively than heat mats (the IRA and IRB penetrate their skin much deeper than IRC), so they don’t need to spend as much time basking. I’d switch to a halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat, they’re more natural and beneficial than DHPs (the levels of IRA And IRB they produce more closely mimic the sun).

We have a 3-4 month old leopard gecko and he doesn't poo on a regular basis. I feed him between 5-7 crickets daily and he is active and curious. Is this because he is settling - we have only had him for two weeks? He did start pooing everyother day at the end of the first week but then we added another hide and a plant to give him more coverage.

As long as his temps/heating are good I wouldn’t worry too much.

I have two rescue geckos and ages are estimated to 1-2 years for my female and 2-4 for my male. My female has stunted growth and she was malnourished and very underweight - do you have any suggestions to help with weight gain and growth?
@nightinggale64703 жыл бұрын
Feed her a variety of live, gutloaded, dusted insects. Crickets, roaches, silkworms, and black soldier fly larvae can be fed regularly. Mealworms, superworms, and hornworms can be fed occasionally. Healthy adults should be fed 1-2 times a week, so I’d maybe feed her a bit more often than that (although be careful that she doesn’t become overweight). Are the geckos housed together?

When you said "don't make them lazy" it really made me think of my Crested Geckos. So I made mine LAZYYYYY. I handle them once a day, have since they were babies. And they don't jump. I feel they have a "No F's given" attitude. They barely hang on to me and would slide off my arm. They just expect me to catch them, or to have a hand out. They will sort of just flop but not actually JUMP anymore. So Stitch I have had for 4 years, and she stopped jumping a long time ago. She'll sit on me and just chill. Staple I had 4 years this October, she will jump the ODD time, but normally to get out of her tank and onto me and then she just climbs all over me. She's very active, but doesn't jump away from me or onto objects or anything. Snap is my "baby" even though I had him 2 years, now he jumps the most out of my Crested Geckos but I always encourage him to jump when I handle him and he has to jump to get back into his tank and I hold my hand up and a little away from the tank. My most jumpy lizard is my Gargoyle Gecko that was already an adult when I got her, they said she was about 3 years old - she jumps a lot and doesn't really hand walk, she either sits still or jumps somewhere.
