Love the advice that you don't have to stuff them with loads of food, just make sure they're healthy. Seems pretty logical but I hear or see a lot of people overfeed because they want a certain "look" out of their pets.

Yeah that's what I was afraid of, as I said all geckos are different, some people see one with a massive tail and what to replicate it, it's like looking at Kim K's bum and trying to replicate it haha

I went to Petco the other week and I was asking around, seeing how much the people actually knew about how to care for a gecko or beardie. I walked in, looked at the leopard geckos, lady goes, “ Are you interested in buying one?” of course I said yes because I like to rescue them from Petco a lot. And she goes through “ what they need “ this woman literally said everything that goes against what you should ACTUALLY give them. “ Make sure them have sand, keep it to one hide, give them mostly waxworms, and make sure that you don’t have a heating pad because they get too dried out. “ LIKE, WHAT

I would just like to apologize on behalf of all the bad pet care workers at pet stores…. Except I don’t claim ownership over them and they need to be educated before working/ selling animals…. I work at a petsmart and I am constantly researching care and helping change policies regarding the animals in our store. I am also a zoology major that takes the care of animals very seriously. I would never in my wildest dreams say anything like giving them sand or feeding strictly waxworms because that is how you end up with a sick or dead gecko obviously. Whenever someone is interested in an animal I go through the main questions: - what animal are you interested in - have you had experience with these kinds of animals before (reptiles, fish, birds, rodents, etc.) Depending on the answers I will either help them with providing for the animal or deny them an animal if they refuse to learn. I will not be giving animals to people who refuse to listen and haven’t done any prior research. It’s sad because pet stores just want to make quick money so the care pamphlets are really bad and the enclosures are “temporary” but the way they are laid out makes people think that how we keep them is the ideal set up. Unfortunately we are not allowed to change it :( But yes, unfortunately a lot of pet care workers are poorly educated and it’s a shame because these animals deserve good homes rather being sold off like a toy :( Sorry for the rant… it just makes me upset when I hear things like this because poor education regarding animals is one of the things I want to help change as a zoologist

I was at the Pet store buying crickets. And there were geckos with missing tails and extremely thin geckos. It made me upset cause when I look at my male and female gecko they have big tailes and are growing quick and they are only 6 months. I may buy one of the females that's skinny so it doesn't have to suffer. They are having a 50 percent off for Haloween so I'll probably get it on the 21st

This video really helped me out! I found a 8 year leopard gecko that was severely neglected on Craigslist, it was living in a 26 by 12 inch tank and was extremely skinny. I didn’t know a single thing about Leopard geckos but I took him anyways and gave him a better life. He still really skinny at the moment but he’s so much better than he was when I got him. I really appreciate your helpful info!

By her parents threatening to take away her gecko it helped her educate herself and take better care. At least she learned from her mistakes and took initiative to improve its quality of life, dont try to shame her be happy she even recognized and fixed her mistakes at all :)

had the same problem earlier this year, i took a good care of my gecko years before, but when college finally started full offline i got loads of work and project, and i usually got home really tired because it's one and half hour of driving to my home (got home at like 6pm at best), still gave him food but not as much, until I realized he was sick so I went to the vet ASAP, but since there isn't a lot of exotic vet in here, it took like a week to actually find a good one, fortunately the gecko is healthy now and I've been giving him a lot of attention

ik this is old but once I got a gecko with stick tail off a breeder, he shown us the parents and they looked the same. Obviously as it was a surprise for me to be getting one my mum didn't look up about them much. So we thought this was normal. The gecko we got lasted about a year, it was in a fine tank and eating properly. Eventually when I went to clean him out I wouldn't find him. The sad bit is that her was curled up under his mat that had the heat mat in. After this I wanted another but I told myself I cant get one until I do LOADS of reaserch. Now I have 2 9 month old females (sister) living happily with big fat tails!(RIP Rex)

The 15th will mark the 2 months I have had my gecko. She's growing big and strong. Very healthy, and is starting to develop her spots. The tail needs to be a bit more fat, but shes pretty healthy, considering I got her from a pet store (Not the one that sells that sand, This one hates the sand, and treats them awesomely)! Im glad you have helped me, I really mean it. Im really happy to know that my gecko isn't harmed in any way, trust me, it makes me feel relaxed. There is still more to go, but it is a pleasure for you helping not only me, but all these people! Thank you for taking the time to read this and have a wonderful day! :)

I commented a while back asking for opinions on my gecko, as her tail was really skinny and wasn't eating much (2 crickets a day and then stopped completely). Well, I found the problem like a week later. She really hates Crickets and mealworms... She does, however, absolutely LOVE Superworms. She also wont eat anything dusted in calcium/vitamins (I use Repashy Calcium PLUS), but she will lick some out of a bowl! It just took finding what food she likes, and how she likes it, and now her tail is really starting to fatten up! It used to be like a twig, now it's like the tail of your gecko in the pic you showed of her ovulating. It's getting bigger every day, too! It may not be a fat tail, but it's starting to get there :D! She's been eating 2-3 superworms a day now, in fact, she went one day not wanting to eat any, and then ate 6 the next day. I was a little worried it was too much for her, but she's been fine! I love your content! I've learned a lot from your channel alone!
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 7 жыл бұрын
Please take the dish of supplements out ASAP, she'll severely overdose! You could try dusting her insects with a different brand. Superworms aren't the best staple diet as they aren't very nutritious. I'd try to feed her more variety :)
@aquarist
@aquarist 7 жыл бұрын
Fiona Shepley I've tried different brands, and I've seen plenty of videos stating that having the calcium in a dish in the tank is good so they can always lick up some if they need it and they won't take more than they need. Also, she refuses to eat absolutely anything but Superworms. She's been very healthy since I've started doing this and is finally actually happy. before, she just laid around and got spooked by everything (even her own shadow) and her tail was like a twig. Now, she runs around the room when I let her out and she eats, and her legs don't look like they're on the verge of breaking. I'm no expert but I like to do my research, and what I'm doing now seems to be the best for her. she doesn't lick much of the calcium up either, just a single lick maybe like once a week. She's also finally shedding, she didn't shed once since I got her until recently. she's very active now as well, and plays around with her food before killing it lol. She likes to run circles around them and push them around and step on them, and then eventually she'll let it get away a bit and then wiggle her tail and eat it. Each gecko will be different, and this is how mine prefers to live and lives the healthiest. I have a lot of experience with fish (I study fish and I have 5 aquariums) and I can tell you, they're all different. you can have the same fish as someone else and have a complete different experience because they prefer different things lol. I appreciate your concern but this seems to be what my gecko prefers, and something recommended by some other KZbinrs and a few people on the forums who were rated to be rather reputable (in the forums), and it's what has worked the best and kept my gecko happy and healthy :)
@aquarist
@aquarist 7 жыл бұрын
Fiona Shepley also I should have made it clear. I dust the worms in vitamins, I have a separate bowl for calcium as she won't accept food dusted in it. I don't use repashy calcium plus anymore as she refused to eat it.
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 7 жыл бұрын
Does the calcium bowl have d3? And also, what other insects have you tried?
@aquarist
@aquarist 7 жыл бұрын
The calcium bowl does not have D3 as I don't want my gecko to get "Reverse mbd" from overdosing on it lol, I dust her food with D3 every so often to provide her with her appropriate diet :) I've tried literally everything I can buy locally. Crickets, mealworms, waxworms, silk worms and dubia roaches. She ONLY accepts superworms. Which is fine to me because I had 4 successfully become beetles (1 of which I fed to her and she loved it too) and they are breeding, giving me more free worms :D! She absolutely loves them! She does accept the occasional cricket now, but will stop eating them after the first 2, and wants the worms again lol.

Really nice video! Your gecko is huge. My 3 month old is at 50 grams now.... He's not even over weight he just eats SO many worms.

Omg that's massive! Haha, are you sure he's not a giant morph?
@Dan-ty7cb
@Dan-ty7cb 9 жыл бұрын
I'm sure. He's a Fascio cross and they're known to grow bigger. A lot of breeders use them because it strengthens the genetics of a morph and makes them overall bigger.

my female gecko laid an egg but her tail became extremely skinny. like skinnier than the photo u showed. Shes an adult now and she eats pretty well. I always try to give her and my other one crickets. Ive given then wax worms but too often, but when i feed them mealworms they barely eat them.

Please talk about how to feed Crested Geckos feeder insects do you need to dust them? And if so with what and how much and what insects
@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 4 жыл бұрын
Lightly dust them with calcium with d3. Good feeder insects are crickets, roaches, silkworms, black soldier fly larvae, and occasional small hornworms.

Hello I have a question. It's not really related to this video tho so sorry about that. I have been thinking of getting a leopard gecko for a while now and I've done research here on youtube for how to care for them, but everyone says completely different things and I don't know who I can trust with their information. I have been following your account and you seem really reasonable so I was wondering if you know any good books about the care for leopard geckos that I could buy?

I came to this cause my two geckos are well over six months old, a male and a female, my female laid two eggs a bit ago, this explains why my female has a small tail, but my male is unknown age since I got it from a local pet store, so I hope he will fatten up soon

Thanks for this video. I always feel like maybe I am not feeding my LG enough. He has a chunky tail though,but maybe he could carry more around his gut. I feed him 10-15 regular mealworms every 4-5 days and even sometimes I take up to 7 days, but I am trying to be more consistent.
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 4 жыл бұрын
Mealworms are fatty and not a healthy staple at all. Your gecko definitely isn’t underweight, he’s likely overweight. Feed mainly live crickets or Dubia roaches with different types of worms for variety. The more variety the better. A healthy adult should be fed every 3-4 days/twice a week, although if they need a diet once a week is better.

I bought a leopard gecko last Halloween and it was really skinny and had a few problems like not eating, that same night I got it he died because he was really sick, I bet he had a lung disease because he suddenly stoped breathing and a few hours later he died😢

That's awesome, my aft just ate his first 2 crickets in a month or so, and he's got a few left to eat, we'll see if he ate any more from his tank. He's the only gecko I know that you need to leave the food in his tank for 24 hours before he eats. I also turned one of his lights off, his daytime light, and now he eats, or at least I couldn't find the crickets...

Hey I've been wondering about this for a while now. My leopard gecko is 2 years old now and he still is the size of a juvenile. he's nowhere near starving skinny but he's definitely on the slim side for a leopard gecko. his tail has some good girth to it but it could definitely be better. I've gone on amino to try to ask for help about it and I've had people lecture me, tell me he's starving, this and that and all around and I'm just like, why did you think I came here?? so I figured I'd ask here, with no luck on any other platform, what should I do? Edit: just weighed him. while it was hard to do I got mid to late 40s in all of my attempts as the highest number, but it's weird cause I still feel like he definitely looks smaller? I'll try feeding him the usual meal worms and dubias (tomorrow he gets wax worms to celebrate his adoption day though! ^-^) (I feed 6 dubias and 5 meal worms, which is +1 of what you've recommended in your feeding videos but I did this for the sake of him gaining weight. tomorrow I'll feed him 3 wax worms though as you said that can turn out addictive.)
