The original song was in Yiddish, written by Sholom Secunda, and pronounced "Bei mir bist du shayn", meaning "I like you" or "you're great". Leander sings a Swedish translation of the verses, but the one-line refrain has been turned into German: "Bei mir bist du schön" - not a known phrase in standard German, though it's understandable. Presumably the song was Germanised to erase its Yiddish/Jewish origin and because "schön" rhymes with some Swedish words in the verses (e.g. bön).

somebody asked about her very precise pronunciation, especially the r. she was trained in the classical theatre and cabaret tradition in sweden where it vas very important to deliver a text with the right r- and sch-sounds.Before germany she sung in the legendary Karl Gerhard-cabarets. His texts were very sharp,witty and intellectual and had to be understood by the public. They also were political and so anti-nazi that he got into trouble with the german embassy in stockholm.

@jarabaa In German dialects or sociolects usually are not written down. A German jew would write "schön" but still they would pronounce it more like scheyn. Yiddish is closer to German than most rural dialects or e.g. low saxon. Of course you can also try to transcribe your dialect in a phonetic way. It is also fairly normal that a dialect/language totally shifts meaning when translated into a standardized scripture.

@LittleImpaler Yiddish has adopted many words from those languages (most Hebrew/Aramaic, less Slawic, little others) , but its base is medievial southwestern German. The Grammar and most of the "simple" words clearly show these roots and that's why it's a Germanic language.

@bimhimbim I don't think there are many Jews in Germany today, who actually would prounounce it "scheyn" (~shayen). In the whole 20th century only Jews that more or less recently had immigrated from the east would have done so. But "schee" or "scheen" (~shay/n) is quite common in certain German, and not only rural, dialects.

I wonder, back in the day, when they changed the words for foreign audiences, did they still pay royalties to the original composers?
@hebneh
@hebneh 4 жыл бұрын
Sure they did. Once a song had been published as sheet music, or recorded, the names of the composer(s) and the entity that held the rights to the song were established. Particularly if a song was released nationally in the USA, there would be no way a version in English could NOT have been produced without payments to the composers.
