We met Leprous' guitarists Tor Oddmund Suhrke und Robin Ognedal before their concert in Berlin to learn more about the guitar arrangements and recordings of Pitfalls.

I saw them in Milano this week and witnessed Robin's playing. I got to say Robin is a top notch guitarist, with the style, tone, composing, dynamics, phrasing. Guy has it all. Firstly the tones that he is using, that crispy fender tone brings the style to a whole different level. And adds a lot of dynamism as well, which you can not find it in heavy gained guitar parts. Secondly the harmony between Baard and Robin is insane. Playing those strumming riffs so accurately to those odd time signatures that Baard is playing, while keeping the groove so tight is really really hard. He is incredibly creative about supporting the piece as he said as well, the sky is red guitar solo is the proof of how to support a piece with a guitar solo. I heard his vibratos and phrasings really up close and he makes the guitar sing. Its a pleasure to hear this guys vibrato. Lastly, as a guitar player that listens to other players for years now, I should say Robin showed me a whole new approach to guitar, riff-writing, tone, effects and techniques. Really underrated guy. And from the video you can see he is really down the earth and modest guy. Unfortunately there is not much information that I can dig in for Robin's musicianship. Great interview though.

Thanks for this interview! Super insightful. I wish people read this so they have a better understanding that everyone played an important role in the writing of the album. It was definitely a different album, but awesome to see them playing something that challenging themselves, even though it was so “simple”. I’ve come to appreciate, especially after after hearing Michael Lessard of The Contoetionist talk about the simplicity of “pop” and playing what’s needed, “simpler” prog. They play what’s needed.

Huge fan of Robin...such an underrated guitarist. I've been listening the Aspera's album for almost a decade now, and I just can't let it go. It's for sure within my personal top 3 best albums ever made. I wish there was more on him in that style.
