Their first album "Tall Poppy Syndrome" (2009) is a Melodic Prog/Death Metal with growls. Next Album "Bilateral" (2011), "Coal" (2013), and "The Congregation" (2015) are absolutely masterpieces. Check "Slave" (Live Performance) or "The Price" (music video) for the next reaction.

If you want a Leprous song more up your (normal) alley, “Contaminate Me” live is something you’ll dig. And yeah, they’re kinda a genre of their own when you start digging. A lot of rhythm play and jumping from heavy to borderline ambient and even what I’ve heard called “depressing groove.” Also Baard is one of the most creative drummers I’ve ever heard.

One of the best things about Leprous in my opinion, is that all of their work is pretty different from one another, yet still maintains their core sound which is always brilliant. If you ever get back to this band, which I highly recommend, based on each of their albums would be Phantom Pain, Forced Entry, Coal, Rewind, Coma and finally The Sky Is Red. Leprous has evolved a lot over the years, and their sound changes significantly from album to album. Their older stuff was a lot more metal/experimental prog (to be honest, I sort of bounced off of it), which you might dig more than your initial reaction. The Congregation is when I think they sort of turned around and went in a slightly less experimental, but still prog metal-y direction. Malina, the album that utterly hooked me on Leprous, was a step more towards prog rock with less metal. Their last album, Pitfalls, went full prog rock with a lot of atmospheric touches. This one proved to be divisive, and a lot of people didn't like how much they'd strayed from their earlier albums (personally, as primarily a proghead, I loved it). This new one coming out, Aphelion, looks to be keeping with their prog rock trend, but they're doing a lot of interesting things that remind me of their earlier albums in the songs they've released so far. I'm super excited! I'm glad you ended up digging the song in the end! I hope you check out more, as Leprous have become easily one of my all time favorites.

Oh boy, you're in for a journey. Their earlier albums feature heavier music, and even though over time their repertoire evolved and became softer, so to speak, they didn't lose musicality at all I never really expect bands to stay the same over their history. People change, and considering that music is generally a form of expression, it changes with them. It's very much the case here - they haven't stagnated, only moved forward, staying true to themselves. As for the recommendations, Bilateral, Coal and The Congregation are all solid picks, it's a wealth of wonderful music.
