So I think he answered why the china is behind him on instagram. Basically he's only supposed to use it for that one section of that song, but if it's in his line of sight he WILL hit it, so he put it behind him so he could only hit it when he absolutely had to. Hence why it looks so ridiculously uncomfortable when he is playing it xD

@@AndrewRooneyDrums the best way to describe his style I think is "controlled chaos" 😂 he definitely has some kind of ADD or something, I think he's even made jokes about it on Instagram too. So asking him to only play a certain cymbal in a very specific part of a song was a big ask, but dammit he was going to deliver!
@JustinOhio4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if you're aware of this or not but as far as I understand it, the second part of the song....Baard was sent that guitar loop which was recorded in free-time with no particular beat used or even thought of...He then wrote a complete drum part to match around that. How he found a steady pulse in there is beyond me!

Baard is truly a genius and what amazes me is how is able to keep a technical groove while having this insane display of energy (I mean this playthrough is the best example), you really have the impression he gives it all for each song. Then he is an incredibly creative drummer. He has several playthroughs on KZbin and, while we can recognize his styles, they are all different and showcase a different aspect of his technique/playing. I am not writing that because I am fan of him but they are all worth checking: - Illuminate - Rewind - The Price -Moon - Bonneville - COMA - Mirage - The Sky Is Red

And yet, the whole song, including the last part, is in 11 8’s or 4’s. I’ve never seen a good reaction to the floortom-part is in another timesignature, and yet when he mixes in the kick, its the normal 11 for his legs. Or how he follows the guitar with the hi hat and ghostnotes for the first round, and the as the song goes, he gradually switch it up by doubling the guitar rhytm with the snare, to after the guitar solo, he is following the pattern on the kick. And since its always in 11, his hihat backbeats (and china, ride, footed hihat in the last part), is actually "ON-beat" every other frame of 11, giving you the feeling of being a 4/4 song. And yet, there’s sooo much more quirky little details in his drumming as well!

You have GOT to do the obligatory Alex Rudinger - Xenochrist. I watch drum playthroughts pretty much all week and that's still my fav after all these years.

For me, Baard is Eloy Casagrande meets Gavin Harrison. What an amazing drummer.

I did not see it that way, but it makes sense. :D For me it was: Matt Gartska met Abe Cunningham on steroids

Breaking sticks and blowing minds is just an every day occurance for Mr. Baard Kolstad Also, Leprous definitely has metal songs and it's quite interesting to see/hear Baard playing them

As per technique and which are best - you're absolutely right. There is no "best" because each individual's mind works differently, as are each individual's anatomical structure fashioned differently, which then brings the ergonomic factor into play. Keep a space between the thumb and index, don't keep a space between the thumb and index. Bah! Weckl says yes, ten thousand other drummers say no. And so goes the fundamental fact that there are no fundamental certainties in drumming.

His "economy of motion" is kinda shot as he's a bit of a spaz on the kit. I also think he's got classical training in the way he holds the sticks. Regardless of that, he's tasty and has chops. I love watching your vids, Andrew! I'm getting introduced to so many cool drummers on your channel. Keep it up, Mate!
