Thank you guys for your brilliant portrayal of this historical couple! I fell in love with them from the very first scene and your marvelous performance encouraged me to start reading history books in order to know more about Louis & Antoinette! Bravo, breathtaking and splendid portrayal! You have my ❤

I can’t wait to watch this! I am pleased at the sympathetic portrayal of the young couple. They did grow to love one another. They were both so young and inexperienced and the pressure was great. No wonder they struggled. But I do believe their marriage was a happy one.

Same. But I was completely disgusted by how Louis was portrayed in some episodes… I can’t believe they showed him raping her, show him having an affair with another woman, and beat up his brother? They were a lovely couple and Louis was a very sweet man. I can’t believe they slaughtered him to make it “”interesting””.

@@alexa.1812 I was very surprised and disappointed by the sexual assault. Completely uncalled for and never happened. In fact, the opposite is true. It was apparently painful for her and instead of forcing himself on her, he took it slow. Which funnily enough the episode prior to the rape depicts him stopping when it’s painful. The affair with the prostitute was also an odd choice. He didn’t “learn” from another woman. The scene with Provence, I admit, I enjoyed. But historically Louis was not a violent man.

@@historygirl0126 I just don’t understand what the point of portraying him like this was…And him appearing completely dirty in episode 1, even at the DINNER TABLE? Considering he took two baths a day and was very tidy?? Also confused by Chartres’ weird creepy obsession plot-line and the whole Louis asking for a divorce - he was exceedingly religious and was always appalled at even the mention of divorce? I wonder if they made Louis this way to make the audience cheer for her alleged affair (which many historians dismiss anyway) and try to make it acceptable and “”sexy””?

@@alexa.1812I'm glad that you confirmed that they portrayed Louis raping his wife Antoinette in episode 5?? I thought that I had gone crazy when I insisted on other posts that he had. Others (including journalists) called it a 'near rape' or an 'almost sexual assault'. There was no 'nearly' or 'almost'. He is clearly raping her in that scene! And why???! He was so tender and sweet to her up to that point (once he got used to her, and stopped running away). Why did they show Louis completely out of character?? Including allowing Antoinette to 'talk him' into taking sex lessons from a prostitute??!!! Why?! When Louis just said that a man who loves his wife doesn't stray! And was I imagining it, but didn't Antoinette go into a jealous fit in the 'Pick A Princess' episode when Louis kept ignoring her, but started to pay his attentions to Provence's betrothed Josephine of Savoy? Some of the near bizarre character changes from sweet to violent, then back to sweet again almost gave me whiplash!

A week ago, I rushed to the store to get my DVD set. I don't know how I have missed this. I have always been fascinated by her strange relationship with Louis. For sure, they were no regular couple . I am so happy to get this depiction of it. Louis is definitely a peculiar character in the French history. No one can really know his real personality. He is surrounded by kind of a mystery. His personality has been distorted and interpreted in very different ways. But if you visit the Chapelle Expiatoire you can see the renditions of Louis and Marie as seen by their daughter Madame Royale. And I guess, their daughter knew them for real. In the end, they became the epitome of the traditional husband/ wife couple with complete devotion to each other. Thank you so much for this work. It made me so happy. I'm about to watch the last episode of season 1 and then it will feel so empty without them 😂❤

She never loved him but he did love her. They supported each other through the tragedies they endured during the last years, especially the loss of their children. She wrote that after his death, she lost any hope, but it was more support and affection of two parents trying to protect their kids and saving their own lives.

@@mysticalmargaret6105, you get a point but in her letters to her mother, she says how much she is disappointed with him

@@lolobafYes, I've read some of those in biographies about Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI. There is no proof that she 'never' loved him, as you claim, in any contemporary documents of the age. She had the chance to escape but refused to leave him. You can judge it to be what you like. I choose to believe that it was her love and loyalty for him.
