Something tells me that kid who played Gavroche was way too excited to shout "hell!" on stage.

I know this reply's a bit late, but Gavroche's accent is meant to be off to show he grew up on the streets in the lower-class slums of Paris, and as such can't speak French properly (in regards to grammar and such)

Being French I don't get the obsession about the right accent to use. They don't speak italian and don't use an italian accent in Romeo and Juliet performance even if the action takes place in Italy, or Danish in Hamlet. Nothing wrong with that. Yes it is a french story, about french people in France and French people speak french. But if the actors are British or Americans, they speak english with their own accents. This is pointless to sing with a fake french accent or immitate a british accent. That boy is american and sings with an american accent. So be it.

BEGGARS Look down and see the beggars at your feet Look down and show some mercy if you can Look down and see the sweepings of the street Look down, look down, Upon your fellow man! GAVROCHE 'Ow do you do? My name's Gavroche. These are my people. Here's my patch. Not much to look at, nothing posh Nothing that you'd call up to scratch. This is my school, my high society Here in the slums of Saint Michele We live on crumbs of humble piety Tough on the teeth, but what the hell! Think you're poor? Think you're free? Follow me! Follow me! BEGGARS Look down and show some mercy if you can Look down, look down, upon your fellow man! (An old beggar woman finds a young prostitute occupying her pitch) OLD BEGGAR WOMAN What you think yer at? Hanging round me pitch? If you're new around here, girl You've got a lot to learn! YOUNG PROSTITUTE Listen you old bat... Crazy bloody witch... 'Least I give me customers Some pleasure in return! OLD BEGGAR WOMAN I know what you give! Give 'em all the pox! Spread around your poison Till they end up in a box. PIMP Leave the poor old cow, Move it, Madeleine. She used to be no better Till the clap got to her brain. BEGGARS When's it gonna end? When we gonna live? Something's gotta happen now or Something's gonna give It'll come, it'll come, it'll come It'll come, it'll come, it'll come ENJOLRAS Where the leaders of the land? Where are the swells who run this show? MARIUS Only one man - and that's Lamarque Speaks for these people here below. BEGGARS See our children fed Help us in our shame Something for a crust of bread In Holy Jesus' name URCHIN In the Lord's Holy name. BEGGARS In his name, in his name, in his name... MARIUS Lamarque is ill and fading fast! Won't last the week out, so they say. ENJOLRAS With all the anger in the land How long before the judgement day? Before we cut the fat ones down to size? Before the barricades arise? BEGGARS Look down and show some mercy if you can Look down, look down upon your fellow man!

Enrique Sanchez Actually, if it were to be completely accurate, their accents would be French. Les Mis is just usually done in the accent of the place it is performed in.

Am I the only one who thinks that Gavroche should be the one in the logo, not Cosette? He embodies the themes of the show more, and he does more(Including dying for the cause!)

MediaMaster 263 I totally agree! A lot of the show is about the things that were done to help Cosette, but Gavroche actually participates and helps move the story along. I’d much rather him be the logo. He deserves it!

I read this in a youtube comments section once, and to pass on the message, I would say that Gavroche is a good symbol for the show, but while Gavroche symbolizes more of lost innocence, Cosette symbolizes hope

Just speaking English technically doesn't work with the setting either. I personally like the Cockney accent, too, as it represents the social status really well. But as this production is American, a cockney accent might have been a little weird, too, so...
