Vivek Kamal actually the national guardsmen, usually recruited from the bottom of society, were different from the army guys. The guys with blue uniforms are national guardsmen, while the army are the guys with red hats and sashes. The national guard stood up for the people multiple times, especially in the French Revolution of 1848 which overthrew the monarchy once and for all and established a republic. They actually switched sides and there was even fighting in Paris between national guardsmen and the army. So it makes sense that the national guard would join in while the army sees them as a threat.

@@imnotgivingmynametou I hope you realize how many revolutions the french have actually had. They went from Monarchy to republic to Empire to Monarchy, then to a republic, then back to empire and then finally back to a republic. This film takes place right before the 2nd french republic was formed during the 1848 revolution, so it's actually before the revolution.

what’s the difference between national guardsmen and army?
@Thegumpus1
@Thegumpus1 2 жыл бұрын
@@linh4558 A lot actually. The National Guard was established by Lafayette during the Revolution in 1789 and was always more revolutionary than the army. While the army had a strongly aristocratic character, being led primarily by nobles and their sons, the national guard drew from the citizenry more broadly and primarily consisted of the bourgeois middle classes. During the revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, many of the nobles fled the country as so-called 'emigres', and the leadership of the army was replaced with bourgeois revolutionaries. However, after the defeat of Napoleon and the Restoration of the Bourbon monarchy in 1815, the emigres returned and the army leadership was purged of beloved Bonapartists like General Lamarque (whose funeral procession is depicted here). While the National Guard was never as pivotal as the Sans Culotte themselves, during France's many revolutions they frequently took the side of the revolutionaries and against the more conservative army. Tragically, the revolution of 1832 was not such a time and the Guard left the revolutionary students to die on the barricades alone. To their shame.

When the beating of your heart Echoes the beating of the drums There is a life about to start When tomorrow comes! Will you join in our crusade? Who will be strong and stand with me? Somewhere beyond the barricade Is there a world you long to see? Then join in the fight That will give you the right to be free! Do you hear the people sing? Singing the songs of angry men? It is the music of the people Who will not be slaves again! When the beating of your heart Echoes the beating of the drums There is a life about to start When tomorrow comes! Will you give all you can give So that our banner may advance Some will fall and some will live Will you stand up and take your chance? The blood of the martyrs Will water the meadows of France!
