It's a comment about integrity and is employed by the director to trigger us. It's a brilliant choice. The fact Crowe can and did do it as directed is a demonstration of his ability, his integrity, and his professionalism. That's what sux about being a truly talented and well trained actor: If you do your job with love and integrity you often go unrecognized. Your only consolation is rededication to your craft. How much it must suck to be so famous and yet unsung for your real achievements--chiefest of which is voluntarily placing oneself under others and in the public eye. I couldn't do it. I doubt anyone commenting here could. But here's the real Mind Eff of it: In filmmaking and celebrity there's no such thing as bad press.

Lotta ill informed comments here. The singing was filmed live on the day, not voiced over. This was as close to a filmed live musical as any of us will see. The only caveat is they were afforded multiple takes. Sure, lotta press around this "fact"... and lotta mixing to do to mix out ambient sound. But this production had a lot of integrity. And hey, haters: Crowe can effing SING! The rough edges here are intentional, the artists' choices. That's what makes this an important and undersung production.

Why don't people get this? Director's choice. Val Jean is the designated criminal, but his voice is "purer" than the voice of the LAW, aka Russell Crowe. The same lot dissing Crowe here would drunkenly devour one of his band's concerts. What is wrong with people?! That dislike of Crowe's voice is PART OF THE FILM. You are meant to compare his delivery with Jackman's and find fault. Duh?!! It's INTENTIONAL. It's meant to provoke specious debate. It's a very deep part of the "art of it". And FYI, Crowe IS a singer, has a successful band (or did, dunno, don't keep up)! You don't like his voice? WELCOME TO CASTING 101. And welcome to artistic integrity. Sorry it offends your naive sensibilities. Grow up soon. We're rooting for you.
