I have cried every time I have seen Les Mis. Ann Hathaway's performance was he most gut wrenching of all I have seen.

True. She is a great actress indeed

A lot was said when the movie premiered, about this business of singing live, why try to give 'reality' to a musical when it is nothing more than that, 'a musical', where people sing and not a drama in the 'strict' sense of the word, as if 'we are actors imitating real life (and not singing)'. Well, I think Anne Hathaway shut their mouths and left them permanently closed with her extraordinary Academy Award winning showing. In my opinion, this has to go into history as one of the greatest acting performances of all time. I have seen the movie maybe 10 times, and this scene, along with the movie ending always leaves me unashamedly tearful. So sad and at the same time so triumphantly, soul filling emotional moment that words hardly do any justice trying to describe it. One of the most 1-derful, glorious scenes in cinema history. Thanks for the video and for sharing your reactions with us. Blessings from San Juan PR.

People complaining about her crying while singing are just wrong, it makes the scene so much more impactful.

Absolutely one of the best performances, undeniably , her mother performed this long ago , so it was special and it comes out in the performance

No it wasn't. This was the fourth take, although they spent 8 hours on it at the request of Anne but settled for this one. "Director Tom Hooper let her perform the song over a dozen times-he says he got the perfect performance on the fourth take-but after 20 takes, Hooper told her to stop. "And I was like, 'Fair enough. ' I never bettered it," she explained."

Having watched Les Mis live at the theatre - this song was breath taking and jaw dropping. Pin drop silence and stillness in the audience, a young girl singing her heart out in a pencil spotlight...beyond words I have.

That is the greatest acting of a song I have ever seen. There are many other performances of this song that I would much rather listen to, but this is perfect in this setting in this story in this movie.

This movie is so incredible, and so is this song. I have watching this movie since I was 3 or 4 years old I have probably watched les mis about 50 times. I am almost 12 now and I still love this movie with all my heart, and the songs never get old.

Even without looking at her, you can just hear all of the emotion in her voice. That's insanely hard to do while singing! The only thing I find even more impressive that speaks even more to her performance is the fact that the entire thing was done in just one single shot except for two camera cuts a few seconds apart at the beginning.

Not for nothing, it is for me the most dramatic performance that makes me cry every time I hear it. But the interpretation of “On My Own” by Samantha Barks is also a great performance

You are a beautiful person, I love when people is almost able to embrace themselfs fully in to the emotions from heart to mind, the moment in time and circumstances! The performance is truly breathtaking and crushingly sad... This musical is a masterpiece of storytelling of how life really was in france during these chaotic famines and uncontrollable Napolinic expansion of democracy during the French revolutionary times of enlightenment. All in all, Be very greatful that your time on earth didnt involve the upbringing of a family during this moment in history. This is certainly not the last great revulotion in the west. All it needs as fuel is a combination of rapid tech advancement ,heavy social changes / restrictions and an autoritarian greed as obscene as it is strangely normalized. I wish you, Grasya a future of good blessings and health.

Such a pity Hathaway's performance is in the same movie as Russel Crowe's performance which should only be used for torturing the prisoners at Guantanamo when the Achy Breaky Heart CD became too worn out to be played anymore.

You can sing but broadway singers tend to sing to their audience. That means they have to act as well. Deliver the emotions and the required feeling of the song. In this case, Anne is an actor who sings and Ruthie is a singer who acts. Both talented ladies deserving of what they have.

Have you've seen the stage musical 'Phantom of the Opera'? Try not to watch the movie adaptation. It's nowhere as good. The stage musical starred Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. It's more like an opera as almost everything is sung. Here's a sample. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmSxen5jo9h8aMk
