Very true and well-said. You hit it on the nail! Or sometimes, you see singers raise their upper lips (for lack of a better picture, like how donkey raise their upper lips) so that they move the notes 'more forward' so it will have more luster!

Lauren is amazing, and I never seen a performance from her that wasn't, this one not excluded. She is good in this role, but I really picture her as more of a Cosette.

I just love her voice, and she and Lea Salonga are the srongest influences I have on portraying Fantine!

I don't think the smiling is an effect of characterisation. The 'smiling effect' I think comes more from her vocal placement. Many vocalists are encouraged to raise their cheeks when they sing as it focuses the voice, creating resonance, clarity and an added 'ping' to the tone. It also makes it easier to modulate the dynamics and blend the registers when the voice is placed high around the face. It is referred to in singer's shorthand as 'placing it in the mask'.

I think the choice was made was to emphasize her inner beauty and purity as well as to dramatize her descent--it's physically more dramatic if she starts out looking almost entirely differently than she ends up. Just a theory, I could be wrong, but to me it's the most sensible justification. ;-)

The lady here did SO much better than the girl I got, in the revised edition of the show I saw, they speed this song up and it's not powerful at all....I wish it was still performed this way...this is heartbreaking....

You're wrong. The song wasn't written to mean hope, but tragedy. The lines at the end (Now life has killed the dream i dreamed) mean there is no way she can live the life she wanted. I think changing the song after LL was one of Tom Hooper's good choices. However, he also made bad ones, for which i think he wasn't nominated.

I don't know why everyone craps on hathaway i think all things considered she did well for a non Broadway/opera singer/actress its two completely different sides of theater i love both personally

I wish tge stageplay put I dreamed a dream after lovely ladies like the film. But i think this really develops Fantine as a character and her motivations. Anne Hathaway says she is at the bottom of a hole and will never get out. Si its just whether her character development plot overrides the lication of the song

Yeah I dreamed a dream is supposed to be very heartbreaking lol I can't imagine the song being sped up. That's weird to me. Wow

i thought that was a mistake, the song says she dreams that things will get better, she still had hope during the song, after lovely ladies she is at rock bottom and has no idea how she can change her fate, for me that ruined the film, and why i think it didn't get the nod for best director

I think this sounds too contemporary and young for a fantine :(

Great voice, but why is she SMILING through the whole song !??? Fantine's given up. Maybe she's showing off her new veneers ?

She has an outstanding voice don't get me wrong. BUT like Anne Hathaway once said in an interview it's seems almost selfish to do it the pretty way like this lady was doing. It's such a heart wrenching song and really can bring a tear to your eye but she should sing it like how Anne did in a beautiful yet heart breaking way
