Les Paul Junior Guitar build - Start to Finish - No Talking + Sound Demo - Mosal Guitars
Welcome to the full 'super edit' video of this guitar build. You can watch each of the 14 episodes as part of the playlist.
I spent a year slowly building a 50's les paul junior double cut, both the neck and body were taking from a single board. I added an ebony fretboard, headstock veneers front and back, mother of pearl inlays and a custom Bareknuckle P90 that screams and cleans all in one.

Thank you! I had been dreaming of a space to build for many years until I took the plunge of buying a place which had a big shed. Which was one of my top priorities! Nothing wrong with starting with a partscaster or a kit if you're short on space though!

My fav go to punk rock guitar . A luthier friend , made me one with a serious huge d baseball bat neck . Banana yellow . One piece mahogany,body one piece neck volute , Seymour antiquity p90, tone pro locking bridge, kluson tulip , a bit of a modern twist to it. And I had to put in inlay LAMF . In memory of Johnny thunder’s, for me he was the best ambassador of the juniors. Great built btw . I subscribed instantly ❤❤❤

Thank you so much for you comment. Really glad you enjoyed it and that sounds like a great junior you’ve got yourself. How is the SD P90? I did consider it, but there are so many pickup makers out there know it can get a little overwhelming on choice

@@MosalGuitars their great vintage sounding a tad hotter than Gibson . Which is great for me since I mostly play punk and rockabilly . With the 50 s wiring , just roll the tone knob and the Color is incredible. Simplicity at best. I heard great things about Lollar and Aurora which are based in Canada. He makes everything by hand . I’m ordering a set of overwounds paf style from him soon. Happy new year and hope to see great builds, in near future 💯🔥

Nice build, only thing i would say is i dont like seeing frets hammered in with that amount of force, it can deform the metal. I do prefer to press them in wherever possible
@MosalGuitars
@MosalGuitars 3 ай бұрын
Thank you, when I can get a press, I will. But until then, the fret hammer it is. The frets are nickel steel, the hammer is brass. The hammer will deform much quicker than the fret wire and the frets require levelling, crowning and polishing regardless of the installation method

I read one of your comments below about intonation, that you don't care for the bridge on your build....I have a Gibson LP DC, single pkup, and I got for Christmas in 2022, a Hipshot Baby Grand Guitar Bridge. The name sounds like what it looks like, a Baby Grand piano, the shape of the bridge. Mine works great, and really cool looking, plus, much better for palm muting, more surface area in other words. I'd post a link, not sure if youtube would like that, but google that bridge, you'll see it. They are pricey, but I think well worth it. Mine intonated great. You're build looks great man, really nice, and sounds great!!
@MosalGuitars
@MosalGuitars 6 ай бұрын
Thank you, I have seen the baby grand bridges before, not majorly keen on the look. I dont mind the intonation not being perfect, that is a bit of the charm for me on these vintage designs, that being said it would be great to at least see how its plays/sounds being setup perfectly. I will have a look at the dimensions on the bridge as it may not be an option without replacing the studs etc
@dalesmyth7398
@dalesmyth7398 6 ай бұрын
I wanted the Baby Grand at first for 1 reason...easier to palm mute the strings. The small bridge on my Gibson didn't have enough meat on it for me. Once I got it, it grew on me quick. Hipshot makes other bridges that intonate if you don't care for the look of the Baby Grand. If I had 1 gripe, and it's not much of one, once my new bridge was in place, it kinda cocks up just a bit, with string tension. It's not affected anything at all. I saw some on videos, use a washer under the Baby Grand set up...and it worked fine. I just never saw the need in it. My strings are very low, and I run 8 ga. strings, no buzzing or fretting out at all.@@MosalGuitars

Wow, such a nice guitar. Amazing work. How many hours does something like that take to build?
@MosalGuitars
@MosalGuitars 6 ай бұрын
Thank you, this was my 4th build and I the first using some pre-made templates which definitely made things a little easier. I did however want the finished instrument to have a better fit and finish than the first three and adding the camera really slows the build process down as there another whole element to think about. I'd estimate 120-150 hours with some mistakes made along the way, trying new things and just trying to take my time as much as possible

My 2 cents, I would use original Titebond instead of Titebond 2. TB-2 glue joints can creep after while. Especially with something that has constant tension on it.
@MosalGuitars
@MosalGuitars 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment, I haven't used anything but Titebond 2 and not had a problem yet. It does seem to be an age old question though on what glue to use and for what purpose, I have considered many others, but while to me if it isn't broken, I wont fix it. If that changes though, I will move on to something else

Holy shit.. this is a great build, at first a was a little worried about that tenon and mortis being not a great match to each other, but it turned out perfect. If you are going to be honest, is the guitar a great player guitar ? does it intonate properly ? String action nice and low ? Is the neck the profile you did aim for ? How long did it take to build this guitar ? Thanks for sharing...
@MosalGuitars
@MosalGuitars 6 ай бұрын
Thank you for the comment. The guitar plays great, I followed some pre-made templates for the first time and the nut width is a little small to what I usually go for. Action and playability are great, I wouldn't mind trying a different bridge, as a wraparound like this will never fully intonate perfectly. Neck is a slimish 60's with the deep volute which I copied from my first build and in total 120-150 build time on this one.

@@MosalGuitars Yeah it´s great to have templates, I saw you using grain filler, but what are all the rest you put on the body and the neck ? some type of oil ?
@MosalGuitars
@MosalGuitars 6 ай бұрын
I used a home-made grain filler, sanded everything back so just the grain was filled. Then Crimson guitars water based red stain, then onto Crimson guitars oil. First couple of coats with the penetrating oil, then another 12 with the high build oil. Ive used this oil a few times now and can get a decent finish with it, but it takes a long time to apply and buff out every time, its time consuming for sure. Then I let it sit for about 4 weeks before re-assembly - which Im not too sure if its required, but I was away so i couldn't work on it anyway.
@HearGear
@HearGear 6 ай бұрын
@@MosalGuitars It turned out really good, I have seen people do just open pore, or just not using any grain filler at all, and even that turn out pretty good. I have a few builds I am starting to build in just a few weeks, the most interesting one is going to be built from Gibson LP 1959 templates with with a flat top and a recessed Floyd Rose and a P90, zero degree neck angle (because of the recessed Floyd tremolo) and a 14 degree headstock angle. I am really excited about that build. I might just use my CNC to make another set of templates with some modifications on that 1959 dimension on the nut with I think.

@@MosalGuitarsthere are wraparound bridges that have individual string regulation for the intonation, even from affordable brands like Wilkinson. I use one in a replica of an epiphone coronet I built (not as well made as your guitar tho)

Great job. It's a shame that Crimson template has a strange over complicated neck joint. The real DC has a much simpler way of doing it. Glad you did such a wonderful work, despite this.
@MosalGuitars
@MosalGuitars 6 ай бұрын
Thank you. It did end up being a bit of a pain, and only after the templates arrived had it dawned on me the juniors made with full width tenons. Which makes loads of sense when these were being mass produced it would have been so much quicker to build on an assembly line, and reducing the processes having the full width. However, the template did have the neck angle added to the neck tenon and not the mortice routed at an angle which did make it somewhat easier to get the correct angle for the string height. On the next set neck I will definitely use the best of both worlds
