When I was 6 I was obsessed with this film and watched it all the time. No surprise I came out 10 years later 😂

The book is much clearer that Ninny isn't Idgie, but even in the movie there are a lot of signs she isn't. For instance, she married Idgie's brother (not Buddy), which she tells Evelyn in the first scene when she meets her. I made a list on another reaction. I'm not gay, but I always thought they were a couple in the movie too, although it's clearer in the book. There was something called a Boston marriage, where two women would live together as partners. This could be platonic or not openly stated as otherwise or an open secret.

The book and the way it’s written would be very difficult to transcribe to a movie. The book is about so much more than Ruth and Idgie. A great book.

Have you read the sequel to Fried Green Tomatoes? It is just as good. "The wonder boy of Whistle stop." Fannie Flagg wrote it during the pandemic.

What a lovely movie this was. And so melancholy. Oh, and I’m never stepping on a railroad track again.

It was the same issue with "The Color Purple". The lesbian relation ship was barely addressed in the movie.

For the time being, them even having a kiss in color purple and subtext in this movie was already a win.

I used to see Fannie Flagg on game shows like _Match Game_ and small acting parts (the lead's sister on _The New Dick Van Dyke Show)._ And then she came out with this novel.

Ninny isn't Idgie. Ninny said in the beginning that she married Idgie's brother, Cleo. The point of that last shot was that Idgie was still alive and running around.

can't two women love each other without being lesbians?
@HuntingViolets9 ай бұрын
Yes, they can. There seems to be something there, though, and I think it's more spelled out in the book.

Yes, but say that about characters that aren't actually lesbians Read the book and then delete your comment when you prove yourself wrong. Or maybe you're just butthurt because we get more girls than you?

You are not queer so you don't get all the gay hints. 1. two fingers in the honey pot... 2. the food fight with the berries is a gay hint too, and how it sounded for Grady. 3. Idgie wearing mens clothes and never having relationships with men (yes sterotypes but still). 4. The I love you scene minus the "friend" was too emotional for friends. 5. her telling Idgi to settle down after her 6. idgie telling her she is as settled as she wants to be. PLUS in the book they are a couple and her family knows it and even teases her about being in love with Ruth.

@@XyName just ignore people like this. The book itself confirmed they are both in love an in fact queer. So dont waste your time on obvious hmpobes who just try ruining everythimg queer because they dont like our existance.

I don't like the cannibalism part either. I hate cannibalism stories.
