Yeah, he didn't stress much on satellite communication. He said it's not efficient because the wave has to travel a distance of 22000 miles but EM waves travels with the speed of light 🤔

@@lbmetei7596 The further the satellite is the weaker the signal will be be when it reaches earth. Also at that distance the delay is about 140 millisecond which may not be a big deal. But the signal may have to travel that distance up to 4 times. So that's more than half a sec of delay which is not good for real time communication such as gaming or voice.

It's a great video, but one thing, as a physicist there is one thing the has sneaked into the public vernacular that is not correct: There is no such thing as centrifical force. What they mean to say is: Centripetal = center seeking force (centri = center). Ex. Gravity Centrifugal = away from center force (fug = away). Ex. The velocity of the satellite

the velocity- either angular or linear- of the satellite is not away from the center. The linear velocity is tangential to the orbit. And for angular velocity, inwards/outwards it is meaningless. Gravitational force is the centripetal force. But yes centrifugal force is make believe.

Here I am at 30 years old looking up “how do satellites work?” My other question is: why/how does a physicist end up watching such a basic and elementary video, since you apparently have an identity of being a physicist and if you notice gradual and slow changes in the public’s way of interacting with physics terms, you’re not new to this. @Walking Speech If it's pics of satellites from earth you looking for - well that's not going to be easy. Even with the best ground based optical telescopes. Satellites range in size from a Rubiks cube (cube sats) to the size of an SUV in the geosynchronous 36000km orbit. Trying to seem them through a telescope or a zoom lens of a camera is equivalent to observing an ant 2 miles away through a telescope. You ain't going to see it.

They just lunch a new one. And the old one goes to the graveyard orbit which is 321 km from farthest active satellite. But I'm not sure about all of the satellites because there are space crafts capable of refueling satellites. But still youtube comment section isn't a place to get information from. 0:30 There ain't no centrifugal force. There's only a centripetal force: one that points inwards. In a satellite's case, this centripetal force is the gravitational pull. What keeps an orbiting satellite in orbit is the balance between its centripetal acceleration (caused by the centripetal force) and its lateral velocity with regard to whatever it's orbiting.

To make money, if you have a satellite up there providing a service you make money. TV, Internet, telephone and every other service that uses and requires a satellite will have a satellite up there. Then we have GPS and weather satellites, plus a bunch of secret government satellites we don't know about and dead ones. They didn't. Usually, satellites' lifetime is about 15 years. After that, it replaced by a new one.

They are not refueled, the amount of fueled they carry is calculated beforehand in order to last for the entirety of its lifetime. Then, as it has been mentioned in the video, when the satellite is about to run out of fuel, they move it to the graveyard orbit and leave it there.

A waste of materials would be to go and refuel them, remember you have to launch a rocket to get to them so it is much better to just launch a new one. This obviously increases the amount of space debris up there and that's the main issue that needs to be solved.

@@mahavirchouhan7873that’s what I was thinking. Why not design satellites to just get back to a location or do something else that would make it feasible to collect them? I’m thinking it simply doesn’t matter, money wise. Morally, it matters. However, one might argue it’s more ethical to just leave the satellite in space forever because the environmental and time and financial cost of getting the satellite back would far outweigh actually rescuing the satellite and having the trash taken out of space. Idk. Makes sense to me that if we can get a satellite into an orbit, we can do the opposite, and get it back, and it wouldn’t necessarily need to have a major cost associated with it. There are satellites and they are uselessly orbiting in space, but they aren’t inherently worth bringing back to orbit when their fuel source depletes. I’m thinking a lot. Hmmm. Why don’t we just throw a new engine and new parts into a computer or a car or anything when it “dies”? Perhaps we should. Or perhaps capitalism can’t thrive when we are recycling stuff. The 1% gotta get paid. There’s no money in taking a satellite out of space and bringing it back to Earth. The main motivation here seems to be maximizing profits for the shareholders of whatever companies own the satellites. The motivation isn’t to be ethical and do the right thing. We gotta think about long term sustainability though. As humans, can space handle the amount of satellites and they “trash” we discard into space? The answer is yes. For now…brb while I spend the next 6 months on KZbin teaching myself physics.

0:38 sigh, again, there is no such thing as a centrifugal force. "Centrifugal Force" is a fictitious idea that is used to describe the apparent outward force on an object in radial motion. Centripetal force is the actual force that causes an object to travel in an arc and in this case, gravity is the centripetal force.

The centrifugal force appears in a rotating frame of reference. There is nothing wrong with considering the centrifugal force in rotational motion, because it's sometimes easier and more useful to choose a rotating frame. People go from being okay with it (high school) to hating it and crucifying those who mention it and saying (incorrectly) that there's "no such thing" (woke high school kids and undergrads) to being perfectly fine with the concept (engineering/physics graduates and professionals). Centrifugal force as a concept becomes useful in doing free body diagram at a fixed time point (i.e. turning a dynamics problem into a statics problem. Source: xkcd.com/123/

Brilliant video, many thanks for the way you explained it. I do think that most of the planet that relies on satellites for digital communications ( i.e. keeping all your eggs in 1 basket) & most of the infrastructure really is not a great idea. If we go cashless like many governments want & the system goes down ( which it has & does) it causes a lot of issues.

1:06 Hate to be the nerd here but, that is not true. Small air particles escape the atmosphere and all satellites hit these particles. This creates a very small amount of deceleration called "Orbital Decay". While this is a slow process, most satellites use RCS or Ion engines to counter this. Sorry for my nerd lesson, it was your fault for reading the entire thing. Also there are more reasons for orbital decay but, this was one of the more simple ones.

When the satellites want to go on the graveyard orbite, why do they trust in a way that accelerate their angular speed ? If they switch to an higher radius, than the gravitational force is less strong (because the satellite is further from the earth) but if they accelerate then they somewhat keep the same angular speed that they had on their previous orbit right ? So when they’re on the graveyard orbital, don’t they get further and further from the earth since the centrifugal force didn’t really change but the gravitational force became less strong ? Shouldn’t they thrust perpendicular to their trajectory? So their angular speed is slower resulting in a less strong centrifugal force as well as a less strong gravitational force so they can keep their equilibrium and stay on the graveyard orbit ?
