The beginning of this just sounded like church when I was growing up in a church that sang the old hymns. There was the guy behind you that wasn't a singer, sometimes on key, sometimes off, but he was darn sure making a joyful noise and praising Jesus. Then you add in the best singer at church, whose beautiful voice cut through everything and everyone was just worshipping together and enjoying Sunday music (or Sunday afternoon with my Arkansas relatives who made pot roast for dinner and sang bluegrass on the porch while it was cooking.) But then Chris comes in... Lol. That sounds like only Chris sounds and takes it to a level my church never heard. But it all reminds me of wholesome Sundays, my foundation, my daddy leading the song service and everyone with a goal to enjoy making the best music you could. Oh, how sad I am at the loss of Leslie Jordan, who brought so much joy to this messed up world. I loved every syllable out of his mouth, speaking, singing, laughing, crying. RIP, this is priceless. Thank you, Jen. It's beautiful and so are you for doing this one. ❤️

I am from Arkansas. Definitely Sunday pot roast and potatoes! If you were singing bluegrass on the porch, is it possible you were in the Ozarks? My first exposure to bluegrass was as a small child at my grandmother's in Timbo, Arkansas. I loved being there experiencing that music.

@@AngieCHolland, my dad's side of the family were from the Ozarks. I've been there but didn't live there myself. My grandma moved to the midwest before I was born, but she brought the bluegrass with her! She and my aunts sang and harmonized so beautifully together! And the Sunday pot roast always went into the oven on low and slow roasted while we were at church so the whole house smelled like it and lunch was ready when we got home. 🙂 My dad wasn't big into bluegrass, but we were a down-home kind of musical family and he led song service at church and loved some gospel quartet music. Sounds like some of that may be familiar to you! I'm glad to have grown up in that environment and this song, with Leslie's church-style singing, surely brings it flooding back. Although Chris, Morgane and the brass surely elevate it! ❤️❤️❤️

@@Melly01 completely familiar to me! Reading your words I can see it so clearly. I definitely remember coming home from church to the smell of roast in the oven. My family wasn’t terribly musical, but when I was about 4 years old, one of my friend’s dad was music director at church. He played the organ and her mom sang and played the piano like nobody’s business. She and her two sisters all sang and they toured the south singing gospel in churches. They had albums and everything and as a child I thought how much fun that would be! There’s nothing like a good old gospel singing. Sitting around harmonizing and to be able to do that with your family? Such great memories for you. ❤ At my grandmother’s in the Ozarks we would go to the hootenannies in town on Saturday night after spending all day outside playing in the creeks. Music is a universal language. Thanks for sharing. Brings back good memories.

Jen, first commenting but I have been watching your videos for a while now. Growing up in a southern Baptist church, that is the way I remember that being sung! Thank you for sharing and appreciate your energy!

The "Vestal" he refers to in that line near the beginning (Where's Vestal when you need her?) Is Vestal Goodman, of the Happy Goodman Family, a stalwart fixture of the Southern Gospel world for decades. She had a very unique voice, to say the least. She and her husband Howard enjoyed a bit of a career renewal when they were featured in the Gaither Homecoming series during their later years.

I was raised in and around southern Baptist churches I grew out of that in my late teens and am now an atheist but, I will always live southern gospel music. It is so nostalgic for me and the passion/emotion that southern gospel singers put into their songs is moving.

Thanks for this. Its one of my favorite songs - but my mother didn't like it. She said they only sang this a funerals. But, being from Texas of course, I sang this at her funeral. I know she would have hated it, but for me, it was the perfect song. I'm glad that Leslie Jordan also felt the same way about this song. Wonderful reaction, thanks again.

Leslie was such a sweetheart and a true treasure and is missed by so many. The "Vestal" Leslie refers to at the beginning was Vestal Goodman, a gospel singer who performed in the Southern gospel genre for more than half a century. She was known for her work as a solo performer and as a member of the Happy Goodman Family and was well known for her renditions of Farther Along.

I see I’m not the only one who appreciates this one. I love that Leslie’s joy just shines through and that he was all in. Was he a “singer”? Maybe not in the traditional sense, but yes he SANG. Without reservation. We all feel it and it leaves us moved and smiling, impacted positively. The world needs more of that, I think. He will be missed but how wonderful there are so many posts he shared that will continue to spread joy and kindness. I had a pretty good hunch you would mention his diction on “amongst”. 😂 Chris and Morgane are just incredible and their voices together? Almost like they were meant to be. ❤ Like others in the comments, I grew up with this song with a beautiful message, but it’s not one I hear often these days. Thank you. ❤

He is a lifetime entainer. He is hard to describe, comedian, actor, singer (although non-traditional in technique). You couldn't watch him and not end up with a big grin on your face. I think, "He is a Showman" is the best I can do.

Jennifer! Drat, I was gone all day on Saturday and was under the weather on Sunday. Completely forgot your Saturday video! Getting to it now though. "I'm gonna have to pause ... otherwise I'm just listening". 😅 And I love your celebrations when you hit the right note on the piano first try! 😁 Listening here early morning and this one is rousing isn't it? Lots of passion for the song (and good diction!) Reading Angie and Melly's comments below makes me realize there is still a lot of this great country I live in that I need to see. Great reaction and analysis as always Jennifer (and you're never "just listening"). 😊

He makes the comment at the beginning, where is Vestal when you need her, which is a reference to Vestal Goodman who was a southern gospel legend that if you knew the genre, you knew Vestal.
