Santa gets a few traits from Norse god Odin, such as hanging up stockings by the chimney for Santa to leave presents in... "In Germanic folklore, the god Odin would hold a hunting party each year at Yule. Children would place their boots, filled with carrots, straw, or sugar, near the chimney for Odin’s flying horse, Sleipnir, to eat. In return, Odin would leave gifts or candy in the boots. The legend survived in many European countries after they adopted Christianity. Over the years, the practice would become associated with a Christian figure: Saint Nicholas." Also Odin's flying horse had 8 legs and Santa had 8 flying reindeer. (I say 8 given that Rudolph was only invented in 1939 by a Montgomery Ward store employee for advertising)
