Code-switching probably became more common during the transition when people began to speak Aramaic as lingua franca and slowly lost use of every day Hebrew. We find a similar trend among 1st generation children of immigrants in a foreign country. They start mixing the language of their parents with the language of their country of residence, and within a generation or two, the parents’ language is lost with the exception of a few words and phrases.
