Finally a video on electrical engineering without an indian accent !

Old navy electrician here, we would challenge each other on who could switch from ships to shore power. No blink, no bang, no one notices. I got back to the shop and the Chief asks me "whos on the switchboard?" Told him we already switched to shore power. He smiles, shakes his head and says jackass. 1 jackass in a shop of jackasses. We challenge each other, we all get better.

Excellent video, explains the basics on which the grid is designed.

Yep, that's how it done. We had nothing automatic in the generator room, all manual. We had a 1500Kva and 750Kva hydro electric generators. Both provided an output of 600 volt 3Ph. The the majority of the mill's machinery required 575v 3Ph. The generators were manufactured in 1922, The mill bought them sometime after that, used from a mill in Canada. Shipped to Augusta, GA and setup on the Augusta Canal where the mill built in 1891 stood. The generator and grid power ran through. Pringle Westinghouse switch gear. The system cut the mill's electric bill around $80,000 a month. JP King Mill on the Augusta Canal. I worked in the mill's industrial electrical department. Often having to bring the generators on line after a power outage due to storms. A few time hauling butt to the generator room as the grid power dropped and one of the generators was running out of control due to the old turbine governor failing to close the turbine intake and drop out the generator's circuit breaker. The lights in the mill would be strobing and that the sign this has happened. Drop what your are doing an haul ass to the generator room to manually get the generator under control. The rotor weighed 50 tons. A beast. The mill machinery was usually ok as their motor control contactors usually dropped out when the grid power flicked off. Day's of past working in a American textile mill.. Several of us in the electrical shop were Marine and Navy veterans, we could handle it..

enjoyed it.............I first came across synch when we were experimenting with dc magslips and selsyns years ago..............i learned a lot, thank you, howard uk.............

I already used manual synchroscope in the diesel generator here in saudi arabia way back 2016. My heart beats so fast while I'm using it😅 and I was thinking that one's I made a mistake it would be a disaster in the generator. 😢 But in Jesus Christ name I did it perfectly. I close the breaker manually in the switchgear and the load continuously rise until the two generator balanced the load of 2.0MW each.

Ordinary humans will never appreciate the excitement or satisfaction of what you described. I do, and nod my head with a smile of recognition 😅

A few seconds in, I was expecting this to be one of those parody instructional videos with gibberish words.

You guys with your fancy synchroscope. A couple voltmeters, and some light bulbs wired in parallel with the switch. Say a prayer, get the lights to go dark and throw the switch. If you do it right nothing goes bang

@3:08 Of course not - it depends on the load. One question I have is some power plants and some generators are more powerful than others (4GW plant vs 800 MW). Some generators bigger than others. How are they balanced so that the demand is appropriate for the size of the generator? They all work together but you can't say, ask a 400MW generator to run the same load as a 1GW assuming they are on the same load. Maybe they all work together as 1 I'm just overthinking this...

he is explaining the main idea , of course on each power station there is some practical details anyway still the shift manager and the second engineer dealing with that kind of parameters ,using it mainly will happen in case of the start up or shut down ,and in the most of times we put it on Auto mode .

@@mohammmedgaddoua Thanks. I'm actually fixing my small generator now it's kinda like model railroading - getting it to 3600 / close to 60hz over whole variety of loads

what is bus doing in electrical circuit?in fact i don't really know what does 'bus' mean?care to explain?
@bait282 жыл бұрын
Quite simply it's the side we are powering. In most cases you are adding a generator to an existing "network" or "grid" that already is running and here we try to "synchronize" a new generator to the already powered "bus" in order to increase capacity of the system
@Adhithya20039 ай бұрын
bus (electrical BusBar), is physical junction where various terminals are connected together.

anyone guide me??? Why the generator load (amps) increase or double when it synchronized to main source????? Point#during this problem generator start hunting and end time generator Trip due to overload??????????
@peterrogulla77263 күн бұрын
Generator speed regulation not working properly. If the generator tries to increase its speed when it's synchronized it will try to increase the speed of the main source as well, causing a current surge that will trip the overload protection. Generator "hunting" is typically a symptom of speed control problems like too fast or too sensitive throttle reaction, or a mechanical problem like binding or loose linkage. I hope that 2 years later this answer will help someone.. 😂
